: Beneath the Surface

Valentina woke the next morning to sunlight streaming through the windows of Damien’s penthouse, casting a warm, golden glow over the room. She stretched, the soft sheets cool against her skin, and turned over to find the bed empty. The space beside her still held the faint scent of him, and for a moment, she let herself sink into the warmth of that thought. But then her stomach twisted. The night at the gala had been magical—far better than she’d expected—but it had also made something painfully clear. Being with Damien wasn’t just about love. It was about learning to navigate a world she didn’t entirely trust. She sat up, brushing a hand through her curls as her gaze drifted toward the cityscape outside. “Morning.” Damien’s voice startled her, and she turned to find him standing in the doorway, holding two mugs of coffee. “You’re up early,” she said, managing a small smile. “I could say the same about you,” he replied, crossing the room to hand her a mug. Their fingers brushed as she took it, and her stomach flipped. “Thanks,” she murmured, taking a sip. The rich aroma of the coffee was comforting, grounding her in the present. Damien sat on the edge of the bed, his gaze steady. “You did amazing last night.” “Did I?” she asked, raising an eyebrow. “You handled the questions, the attention, the... judgment,” he said, a faint smile tugging at his lips. “Better than most people would’ve.” “Most people haven’t had weeks of practice dealing with the media,” she muttered, setting the mug on the nightstand. Damien reached for her hand, his touch warm. “You’re stronger than you give yourself credit for.” Valentina’s chest tightened at his words, but before she could respond, her phone buzzed from across the room. Her brows furrowed as she picked it up, the name on the screen catching her attention. “Lila,” she said aloud, answering the call. “Valentina!” her gallery manager said, her voice tinged with excitement. “I didn’t want to bother you this early, but I couldn’t wait to tell you—we just sold three more pieces from your exhibit.” “Three?” Valentina said, her eyes widening. “Yes! And not just to anyone—big names. One of them is a museum curator who’s interested in featuring your work in their next modern art collection.” Valentina’s heart raced. “That’s incredible, Lila. Thank you for letting me know.” “It’s all you, Valentina. The buzz around your name is huge right now, and your work deserves every bit of the attention it’s getting.” After a few more words of thanks, Valentina hung up, her mind spinning. “Good news?” Damien asked, watching her closely. She turned to him, her lips curving into a smile. “Great news. My exhibit’s doing even better than I expected.” His eyes lit up, his smile widening. “I told you. The world is finally seeing what I’ve always known—you’re incredible.” The rest of the morning passed in a blur of excitement. Valentina felt lighter than she had in weeks, the weight of doubt and uncertainty beginning to lift. But as the day wore on, a flicker of unease crept back in. Her phone buzzed constantly with notifications—emails, calls, and messages from collectors and art critics. It was overwhelming, and while some of the attention felt validating, much of it felt intrusive. By the time the afternoon rolled around, she was back in her studio, trying to escape the noise. She had just started working on a new painting when Damien appeared in the doorway. “Busy?” he asked, leaning against the frame. “Always,” she replied, not looking up from the canvas. Damien stepped inside, his presence filling the room. “I have a surprise for you.” Valentina glanced at him, narrowing her eyes. “I’m not sure I can handle any more surprises.” “This one’s good,” he promised, his lips curving into a faint smile. She sighed, setting her brush down. “Fine. What is it?” “Come with me,” he said, offering his hand. Damien led her to the car, refusing to answer her questions about where they were going. “You’re impossible, you know that?” Valentina said, crossing her arms as they drove through the city. “And yet, you’re still here,” Damien teased, his smirk infuriatingly charming. She rolled her eyes but couldn’t help the smile tugging at her lips. They pulled up in front of a sleek, modern building she didn’t recognize. Damien parked and stepped out, holding the door open for her. “Okay, seriously,” Valentina said as she got out. “What’s going on?” “You’ll see,” he said, leading her inside. The elevator ride was short, and when the doors opened, Valentina stepped into a bright, airy space that took her breath away. It was a studio—spacious and filled with natural light, with high ceilings and wide windows that offered a stunning view of the city. Her jaw dropped. “What is this?” “It’s yours,” Damien said simply. Her head snapped toward him. “What?” “I know your current studio is important to you,” he said. “But I thought you might like a space that’s... bigger. Somewhere you can really let your creativity run wild.” “Damien,” she said, her voice wavering. “This is too much.” “It’s not,” he said, his gaze steady. “You deserve this, Valentina. You deserve everything.” Tears prickled at the corners of her eyes, and she turned away, trying to collect herself. “I don’t know what to say,” she admitted. “Say yes,” Damien said, his voice soft. She looked at him, her chest tightening. “I can’t accept this.” “You can,” he said. “And you will. Because I believe in you, Valentina. And I want to see you succeed in every way possible.” Her defenses crumbled, and she stepped into his arms, burying her face in his chest. “Thank you,” she whispered. “Always,” Damien replied, holding her tightly. As they stood there, surrounded by possibility and hope, Valentina felt something shift inside her. For the first time in a long time, she believed in herself—not just as an artist, but as someone worthy of love, success, and everything in between. And with Damien by her side, she felt ready to face whatever came next.
