Aurélie followed Marcel, Léon, and Sophie out the back door and into the night. They sprinted across the lawn, their feet pounding against the dewy grass. As they reached the woods, Marcel stopped and looked back. Aurélie followed his gaze, seeing the dark shapes of Victor's men emerging from the shadows. "Keep moving!" Marcel whispered, grabbing Aurélie's arm and pulling her deeper into the woods. The trees seemed to close in around them, casting long, ominous shadows on the ground. Aurélie stumbled over roots and fallen branches, but Marcel kept her upright, his grip firm. Suddenly, Sophie stopped, her head c****d to one side. "Do you hear that?" Sophie whispered. Aurélie listened, her heart pounding in her chest. At first, she heard nothing. But then, faintly, she picked up the sound of running water. "It's the river," Marcel said, a hint of excitement in his voice. "If we can make it to the river, we might be able to lose them Aurélie followed Marcel, Léon, and Sophie as they made their way towards the river. The sound of running water grew louder, and Aurélie's heart began to lift. Maybe, just maybe, they would make it out of this alive. As they emerged from the trees, Aurélie saw the river stretching out before them. It was wide and fast-moving, the water churning and foaming over rocks and around bends. Marcel led them along the riverbank, his eyes scanning the water for any sign of danger. Aurélie followed close behind, her senses on high alert. Suddenly, Marcel stopped and pointed to a small wooden boat tied to a tree branch overhanging the river. "In there," Marcel whispered. "We'll be safer on the water." Aurélie hesitated, unsure if she trusted Marcel's plan. But Léon and Sophie were already climbing into the boat, their faces set in determined expression Aurélie took a deep breath and climbed into the boat. Marcel untied the rope and pushed off from the shore, jumping in just as the boat began to drift away. Léon took up the oars, his muscles flexing as he began to row. Sophie sat in the bow, her eyes fixed on the river ahead. Aurélie sat beside Marcel, her eyes scanning the shore for any sign of Victor's men. But as they glided downstream, the trees and bushes seemed to grow farther and farther away. Marcel smiled, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "We'll be safe now," Marcel said. "The river will take us to the city. We can lose ourselves there." Aurélie nodded, feeling a sense of relief wash over her. Maybe, just maybe, they would make it out of this alive. But as the sun began to rise, casting a golden glow over the water, Aurélie saw something that made her heart skip a beat. Aurélie's eyes narrowed as she turned to Marcel. "Who is that?" Aurélie demanded, her voice low and urgent. Marcel's smile faltered, and he looked away. "I don't know," Marcel muttered. Aurélie's grip on the boat's edge tightened. "Don't lie to me, Marcel," Aurélie said, her voice rising. "You knew they were following us, didn't you?" Marcel's eyes darted back to Aurélie, and for a moment, she saw something there that looked like guilt. "I was trying to protect you," Marcel said, his voice barely above a whisper. "I didn't know what else to do." Aurélie's mind was racing. Who was Marcel working for? Was he a double agent? Suddenly, Léon's voice cut through the air. "Aurélie, look!" Léon shouted, pointing downstream. Aurélie's eyes followed Léon's gaze, and her heart sank. The boat behind them was gaining speed, and she could see the outlines of several men on board. Here's what happens next: Aurélie quickly moved to help Léon and Sophie. They began to row furiously, trying to put as much distance between themselves and the pursuing boat as possible. Marcel, realizing his betrayal had been discovered, slunk away to the back of the boat, his eyes fixed on the water. As they rowed, Aurélie could feel the adrenaline pumping through her veins. She was determined to get away from their pursuers and make it to safety. But despite their best efforts, the other boat was gaining on them. Aurélie could see the men on board clearly now, their faces twisted with anger and determination. Suddenly, Sophie shouted, "Look! A bend in the river!" Aurélie turned to see a sharp bend in the river ahead. If they could make it around the bend before the other boat, they might be able to lose them. Léon gritted his teeth and rowed even harder. Aurélie and Sophie joined in, their oars dipping into the water in perfect sync. They shot around the bend, the boat tilting precariously to one side. Aurélie held her breath as they straightened out, her eyes fixed on the river behind them. The other boat was right behind them, but they had gained a small advantage. Aurélie could see the men on board shouting and gesturing wildly as they struggled to navigate the bend. Aurélie, Léon, and Sophie continued to row with all their might, their oars dipping into the water in perfect sync. They could hear the pursuers shouting and cursing behind them, but they didn't dare look back. As they rounded another bend in the river, Aurélie spotted a small cove up ahead. It was partially hidden by a screen of trees and bushes, and she hoped it might provide a safe hiding place. "Look!" Aurélie shouted, pointing to the cove. "We can hide there!" Léon and Sophie followed her gaze, and without hesitation, they altered their course, heading straight for the cove. As they entered the cove, Aurélie felt a sense of relief wash over her. They had made it. They were safe. But as they caught their breath and looked around, Aurélie realized that they weren't alone. A figure was standing on the shore, watching them. It was a woman with long, curly brown hair and a kind face. She smiled as Aurélie met her gaze. "Welcome," the woman said. "I've been expecting you. My name is Colette." Here's what happens next: Aurélie's instincts told her to be cautious. She didn't know anything about Colette or how she knew they were coming. "Expecting us?" Aurélie repeated, her eyes narrowing. "How did you know we were coming?" Colette smiled again, her eyes crinkling at the corners. "I have my ways," Colette said. "Let's just say I'm a friend of Marcel's." Aurélie's eyes flicked to Marcel, who was watching the exchange with a mixture of guilt and anxiety. "What do you want from us?" Aurélie asked Colette, trying to keep her tone neutral. Colette's smile faltered, and she looked serious. "I want to help you," Colette said. "You're in danger, Aurélie. Victor's men are looking for you, and they won't stop until they find you." Aurélie felt a chill run down her spine. How did Colette know so much? "What do you propose we do?" Aurélie asked, trying to keep her options open. Colette nodded, as if she had expected Aurélie to be cautious. "I can take you to a safe house," Colette said. "You'll be protected there. But you have to trust me." Here's the next chapter: Chapter 18: The Safe House Aurélie decided to trust Colette, hoping that she was genuinely trying to help. Colette led them to a small, unassuming house on the outskirts of the city. As they entered the house, Aurélie was struck by its cozy warmth. The living room was filled with plush furniture and soft cushions, and a fire crackled in the hearth. Colette smiled, seeing Aurélie's surprise. "This is one of our safe houses," Colette explained. "You'll be safe here." Léon and Sophie nodded, looking relieved. Marcel, however, seemed nervous, glancing around the room as if he expected someone to jump out at them. Aurélie's eyes met Colette's, and she saw a flicker of understanding there. Colette knew that Marcel was the weak link. As they settled in, Colette explained that she was part of a secret organization dedicated to taking down Victor's empire. Aurélie listened, intrigued, as Colette outlined their plan. But just as Aurélie was starting to feel hopeful, they heard a noise outside. Footsteps, crunching on the gravel path. Colette's eyes locked onto Aurélie's, and she mouthed a single word: "Run."
