THE DREAM AND THE BOOK

399 Words
NIGHT — INTERIOR THE PALACE — MAIDS’ QUARTERS Moonlight slipped through the small window of Xena’s chamber. She slept restlessly, her brows drawn together as the same nightmare returned. A MAN stood ahead of her, his face always hidden beneath the darkness. He walked along the same narrow path. Xena followed. The path stretched endlessly into the distance. Then— Xena suddenly opened her eyes. She sat upright, breathing heavily. She had to use the bathroom. After returning to her chamber, she climbed back into bed and pulled the blanket over herself. But sleep refused to come. She stared at the ceiling. XENA Why do I have the same nightmare every day? She turned to her side. XENA Who is that man in my dream? She sat up again. XENA Why is he always leading me through the same path… a path that has no ending? She rubbed her forehead, troubled. XENA Is he trying to tell me something? A thought suddenly crossed her mind. XENA Am I supposed to journey somewhere? She got out of bed and began pacing around the small chamber. There had to be a meaning. There had to be a reason. XENA I need to meet the Wise One. Maybe he can translate this dream. She stopped. XENA It has to be connected to something. This can’t be just a dream. She looked toward the window. The moon hung strangely bright in the night sky. Xena’s expression changed. For a brief moment, she could almost see the same path from her dream stretching beyond the palace walls. She blinked. It was gone. ⸻ NIGHT — INTERIOR ABRAH HOME — ANNA’S ROOM Anna suddenly woke up. She reached for the glass of water beside her bed and took a sip. As she lowered the glass, her eyes caught something beside her pillow. THE BOOK. The one she had found earlier in her father’s garage. THE PILES. Anna frowned. She picked it up and examined the cover. There was no author’s name. No publisher. No date. Nothing. She turned the book over. Nothing. ANNA What kind of book… She sighed and dropped back onto the bed, still holding it. The book felt strangely cold in her hands. Anna stared at the title one last time. Her eyes grew heavy. Within moments, she fell asleep. Still holding the book against her chest. The room became completely silent.
