Chapter Five After Mary-Michael arrived at the house with Mr. Watkins, her husband asked her to join him in his study. When she crossed the threshold, he closed the door behind her. She didn’t have to wonder what he would ask. He wanted to know if she’d made a decision, and she wouldn’t lie to him. In fact, she wanted him to know because—if she was fortunate enough to conceive—she would need his help.
