Chapter 19
Delphine
After a wardrobe malfunction Charlie and I made our way to the Masquerade ball, Mae and Kayla left earlier with some other members of their pack which was comfort to Charlie who seemed to no be able to help himself from pestering Mae about Brodric. “Your boyfriend coming?” he teased to which I rolled my eyes, I was not engaging with him about this topic, how could I? I didn’t even really know what was happening with Cillian or how to even explain to myself let alone Charlie that there was a chance that my wolf was defective. We arrived as the rain had started pouring causing a swift maneuver from the car to the large black umbrellas avoiding the large droplets of rain. As we reached the entrance I helped fasten Charlie’s mask as he helped with mine then proceeded down the stairs our arms linked just as we had done when we were small children. It reminded me of the time Charlie and I were able to attend Leora and Sebastian’s 16th birthday party with all their friends and the kingdom’s officials, we thought we were very mature drinking our lemonade out of our wine glasses constantly toasting each other yet this ballroom was larger filled with Fae, the scent of them all filling my nostrils, I glanced around searching for familiarity which was easily disguised behind masks. “Can we dance” Charlie asked with pure excitement to which I nodded and proceeded to dance floor where I could see that Kayla had already made room for us. Before I reached them felt a hand on my hand, a family warmth as I turned finding Cillian, his hazel eyes meeting mine. “Hey Delphine” he said his hand still holding mine tight “Hello” “You look stunning” he said as a smile’s roses from my lips. I moved a stray hair out of his face to look at him hidden behind a black mask in a snuggly fitted tuxedo. He was about to speak when I could see he was being mind linked “I am sorry Delphine; I’ll be back I have to deal with some pack stuff” he said slowly releasing his hand. As I watched him disappear through the crowed Kayla grabbed me by the hand swinging me back to the group where we continued dancing I made my way to our table where Charlie was seated next to me Joanna across from us, I was lost in thought when Varouk pulled out the chair next to me and sat himself down. “Varouk!” I said feeling a bit shocked, as I jumped to hung him his crushing arms like a bear surrounded me. “Surprise!” He remarked, stopping he the glanced over his shoulder there a few tables away sat Cillian his eyes fixated on Varouk. I smiled. “So, him?” Varouk asked nodding towards Cillian” “I don’t know what you mean” I exclaimed bringing my Champagne glass to my lips “Delphine don’t lie to me! I can smell his scent all over you” he remarked, I slightly coughed. I did not even know what Cillian’s scent was let alone had ever contemplated that other could smell it on me. I put my glass down and looked at Varouk in the eyes. “We are…Friends!” I remarked “It is funny as he said the same and I believe you as much as I believe him” he retorted “What do you want from me Varouk?” I asked “I want you to tell me the truth, you didn’t tell me you were attacked! You didn’t tell me you have been running with a wolf or that you have some type of boyfriend…you just have not told me anything, I know nothing” he exclaimed looking at me, his face looked hurt. “I didn’t want to worry you, I healed fine” I said “What about him, Varouk said” “Just stop it” I remarked taking another sip of my champagne “He is a future King Delphine, and you are the Princess of our Kingdom you need to remember that!” he stated his tone harsh and accusatory, I started to get angry, I know what he was saying but I was not acting irresponsible and placed my glass on the table and turned to him. “It is actually none of your business Varouk! Who I am friends with is not for you to decided" I snapped back as I got up from my chair and walked away leaving Varouk at the table. I felt my eyes become heavy with tears, I refused to let myself cry I told myself, The burden of this family was exhausting where I held no real position other than being just a Princess. I trained with some of the best warriors not just from our Kingdom but of the hunters and my opponents feared my skills as I was triumphant yet our laws are clear I cannot hold a rank even if I am deserving. I pushed through the doors into the foyer my eyes struggling to hold the inevitable tears fighting to come out when I notice Cillian was beside me putting his arm around me. “Should we get some air” he asked I nodded wiping a stray tear from my eye. We stood outside under cover as the rain continued to pour down, the wind howling through the trees, Cillian put his jacket over my shoulders as I composed my angry, Cillian smiled “Are you okay Delphine?” he asked “Yes, my bother can be insufferable at times” I remarked “Did you want to talk about it" he asked, I shook my head, there was no way that I could speak to him about what Varouk said. I could not even make sense of the situation myself I thought. We stood there for some time mostly in silence watching the lights of the cars reflect thorough the rain our hands intertwining. “We need to go back” he said and escorted me back to my table, only glancing once at Varouk who was deliberately ignoring him and speaking to Clare the hunter. Charlie leaned over to me, his hand taking hold of mine. “I enjoyed your telling your brother off” he whispered causing me to smile. “Same” I mouthed “Can I have asked you something” Charlie said “Sure!” I said keeping my back to Varouk as I pick up a fresh champagne. “What is the actual go with you two”, I shrugged my shoulders, it is complicated I whispered, “You like him don’t you”, I nodded “And for what I can see he likes you” Charlie said looking over where Cillian was sitting with his brother and Lomax “Then why are you guys not a thing? Charlie asked “Because we have no mate bond” I replied, it was the first time I had said it out loud and it had pained to say, to admit it that although I did like him, we just didn't have the bond that wolves needed. “You can’t smell his scent or feel sparked?” Charlie asked? “Yes, I cannot smell him at all, and no speaks” I said, Charlie was deep in thought “It is a mate block spell” Charlie said, his face was still in thought. “What did you just say Charlie” Joanna asked from across the table snappy Charlie from his thoughts “It is a what?” I asked feeling confused “Its old magic, like sorcerer magic” he muttered. I looked at him perplexed “What is” asked “a mate block spell” he replied, his eyes looking’s concerned “Charlie! How do you know of this? That Cillian has had a mate block spell put on him?” Joanna asked her tone more accusatory “I told someone about them months ago, the only way to get a mate block spell was from a Sorcerer” Charlie stood while stating this to a table that mostly had no clue on what he was saying. “Charlie!” Joanna exclaimed, she had now stood from her seat and started to make her way towards him “I was asked if mate blocks are still used like when they were used in the olden wars, and I said no that the only ones that can do them are Sorcerers” by this time Varouk and Clare had stopped talking and were looking at Charlie. “I told her before this happen” he said pointing to me “Who did you tell this too?” Joanna asked, her eyes wide “That b***h!” Charlie muttered and started furiously walking across the ballroom, us following behind trying to keep up. Charlie got to the table behind Kayla who as laughing, and Charlie interjected “You did this Mae!” pointing at her across the table, Mae's face in part shock “Did what Charlie” she retorted “The mate block spell, you did it” Charlie yelled, Mae nervously swallowed “Can someone please explain to me what is going on” I said trying to understand what was going on. “When a wolf find’s their mate they start their mating process shifting more often, overheating and just being men tally drawn to one another as well as intoxicating scent and electric touch for their mate. “Charlie sad “Yes, I know this Charlie but what’s going on” i replied “There is a spell that can block part of the mate process, it hides all the reaction side such as touch, smell which can confuse your wolf. “It doesn’t work” she replied getting from her seat walking toward us, Kayla too had stood from her chair. “Yeah it did Mae, just not on who you wanted.” Charlie exclaimed. Mae looked confused at Charlie. But it all started to make sense to me, she had tried to do it on Brodric. I gasp placing my hands to my mouth once I made the connection, Kayla looked at me and then glanced to Cillian who I hand not notice was standing behind us. Kayla turned to Mae “What did you do!” She asked, Mae’s face looked frantic “It didn’t work “she protested “Then why does Cillian have a mate block” Charlie retorted. I could see Cillian face turn into anger as he tried to move closer just as Varouk grabbed him by the arm “What?” Mae asked as tears rolled down her face “How I put it in Brodric’s drink at the wolf ball” she answered, Cillian was only getting angrier as Mae spoke “Well Cillian must of drank it” I said “Who made the spell Mae” Joanna interjected, Mae started the shake “Who” Charlie yelled “A sorcerer I found” she cried. “Why Mae? Why would you do such a thing” I asked, I just could not understand why she would have gone this far “I love him” she whispered “That isn’t love” Kayla remarked and grabbed my hand and walked me away. Other witches had gathered to the table including Mrs Brookes who would escort Mae back to the dorm. Kayla sat with me at the table pouring me a drink and handing it to me while Charlie spoke to Joanna “I am so sorry Delphine! I am sure Joanna can fix it” Kayla said sympathetically ” I do not know if mum can Charlie interjected; Kayla shot him a frown as he reached the table “Charlie, is Cillian my mate?” I asked “Mum is pretty sure you are,” he responded as I took another sip of my champagne "so my wolf is not defective?" I muttered "No babe, you just got mixed up in something so stupid" Charlie said putting his arm around me.
