Chapter 5

Delphine My body felt uncomfortable, which led to me tossing and turning all night, this continued for the next few days where I was living off minimal sleep leading to me feeling wrecked; my body aching from exhaustion, where I just did not feel like myself at all especially in my human skin. Kayla and Mae both had not experienced this before, so they were zero help where Kayla’s older sister Megan suggested I try to shift more as it sounded like my wolf was irritated and needed to run which felt like a contradiction as I had done before. Generally, we only need to shift once a week and I can push it out to three weeks if needed yet I had never felt this uncomfortable even before having my first shift I never felt like I was overheating, tingling, the body aches and the lack of sleep was taking its toll and I was losing focus in almost all my classes. Tonight, I was determined I needed to run so I made my way to end of the hallway where there was a row of keypad lockers for each wolf to put our clothes in. I removed my jeans and T-shirt and undergarments and wrapped a blanket around myself and walked out into the forest toward an old weeping tree with low hanging branches, there was maybe half a dozen blankets hung on it from where other wolves had shifted. Generally, we run in our packs as or telepathy allows us to communicate with each other in wolf form however I have always preferred to run alone the solitude was remarkable. I did not have many friends in Burvich as I struggled making them, I made people nervous as being friends with me a Princess was too much for some people as they never knew how to act towards me which meant it was easier for them to avoid me. I hung my blanket on a lower hanging branch that seemed closer to the ground than others and started to shift to my wolf my bones cracking into place and black fur consuming my body the shift making me feel great and invincible, my paws feeling the earth beneath, I could smell the creek and pine trees in the distanced as a soft breeze ran through the trees. I started to run, that slight breeze now blowing past me sweeping through my fur with a whistle. I increased my speed and would have reached 30miles into the forest when I sensed other wolves and slowed to a discreet walk, it would not have been unheard of other wolves being here as I did see half a dozen blankets on the weeping tree at school however the scent, I was picking up was not familiar to me and to the blankets back at the dorm. I walk cautiously trying to get a fix on what direction the scents were wafting from. I approached the side of the rocky hill face I could see a pack of 6 wolves by the creek the largest Wolf the clear Alpha who was almost double the size of the others with his chestnut brown fur speckled with various other brown tones, instinctively he looked up directly at me where his eyes locked into mine. I slowly backed away our eyes still transfixed on each other until I disappeared into the trees where I sprinted back to the dorm, heading to my room my heart was beating with adrenaline. I felt so unsettled who was that wolf and why did he just stand there staring at me I thought to myself as I opened my door, I was startled to see Charlie a witch who was slumped across my bed in his overalls reading one of my books. “Oh, you are back, thank God!” Charlie declared shutting the book. “Hey Charlie, how did you get in here” I queried smiling whilst I grabbed a water from my bar fridge and sat on the bed next to him am. “Those enchanted locks are easy to break; I was looking for your diary to read but I could not find it” he said with a big smile across his face. “I don’t have a diary Charlie” “How do you not have a diary? You read so much I thought you would have one with all your secrets?” He scoffed pulling a bag of skittles out of his pocket. Charlie and I had been friends since childhood, his mother Joanna one of the more renowned witches was best friends with my mother. “I am loving your pink hair” I said brushing my hand through it, Charlie had always been flamboyant, just looking at him and people would often underestimate his abilities, but Charlie was one of the most powerful witches I knew, his make-up was always on point just as his magic was. Last year the succubus Georgia would torture him with her insults until one day he snapped and turned her into a slug and placed her in the lake, then after heavy negotiations Mrs Brook finally convinced him to turn her back. Yet every now and then Charlie leaves slugs for Georgia in her room just to remind her. “Why were you looking for me Charlie” I asked taking his skittle packet picking out the purple ones to eat. “Well babes, I missed you and you have been acting strange the last few days so I thought something was up so I broke in to read your diary to find out” it is funny how he could say such a funny thing with such a straight face. “Haha, Charlie, I tell you everything” I gave him a kiss to the cheek, this was true we had no secrets, It was hard sometimes as witches were not always at werewolf events and vice versa so I had forgotten that Charlie was not there the other night which meant I would have to fill him in. “There is something Charlie” I said before taking another sip of water. “Oh no what is it? Okay please don’t go out again with Cole's ugly face" he said taking me by the hand “No way, I didn’t want to go out with him the first time” I laughed, his laughed mimicking mine “Well, what is it?” he asked as he pulled an additional skittle packet from his other pocket “Something strange happen the last few days, I started feeling warm and uncomfortable in my skin, every day since then my body is aching to shift. I am also not sleeping more than 3/4 hours” Charlie looked at me and brought his hands to he is temple; it was like he was trying to get his brain to focus. “Maybe your wolf just needs to run every night" he said “Maybe” I agreed “Yeah, but you have never been like that before?” he asked “Megan said that maybe I have to shift more and let my wolf out, so that is what I was doing tonight, and I do feel much better” I explained “How far did you go tonight?” Charlie asked “Maybe 30 miles, I would have gone further but I saw a pack I didn’t know and a massive alpha and decided to come back here” “Massive alpha?” Charlie asked “Like massive Charlie, yeah, he did we just kind of starred at each other for a bit until I decided to head back. “And what? He just stood there. He didn’t engage you? that’s weird” Charlie said “Yeah, it is rather strange”. I agreed “Anyways, enough about some Alpha looking at you. Tell me about the wolf ball, who was there? Did you pick up? Or you still anti- sleeping with werewolves” Charlie laughed. “The alcohol was good” I said with a laugh “Oh, come on, you know I can’t go to them, so I feel so left out” Charlie begged taking my hands “Well, I got daggers from Cole, probably because he knows I just do not like him” I laughed, to which Charlie laughed as well “Oh, I did meet a guy called Cillian, he seemed nice” I said whilst I started to undo my braid “Nice? What did he look like? Hot? I bet hot” Charlie said, I had to laugh as he was more into my social life than what I was. “Well yeah he was pretty hot, massive broad shoulders, brown messy hair” “Isnt that all werewolves” Charlie scoffed “trust me, not all” I laughed “There are not hot witches” Charlie said laying back on the pillows. “Ahh there is, Zayn is gorgeous” I said giving Charlie a cuddle “Zayn is straight, and you have slept with him, I mean hot gay one. Have you seen the gay options here?? Pathetic” “Well, I am sure with all these parties this year there will be more options” I replied, we continue talking and joking until we fell asleep and just like clockwork after 4 hours, I was awake, overheating my body aching to shift again.
