Chapter Six“We are goin’ to blindfold you now,” a rough voice said in a very pronounced North American accent.
One masked man tied a handkerchief roughly over Nolita’s eyes and started to push her towards the door of the carriage.
She was aware that another man was blindfolding Bettine and she put out her hand protectively towards the child, who clung to it for a moment before they were pulled apart from each other.
Nolita, however, was able to hear that Bettine was moving beside her as a man propelled her along, holding onto both her arms and she walked blindly over what she thought must be a courtyard and in through a door.
There was a step over which she tripped and would have fallen if the hands on her arms had not supported her. Then a voice said,
