SANTA ROSA, NEW MEXICO — NOVEMBER, 1951THE GAS NEEDLE ON BRUCE STOCKTON’S 1948 BUICK SEDAN read empty this Friday morning, as the Standard Oil service station attendant ran out from the glassed-in office. Stockton remembered from past trips this way that it was the last stop for a good number of miles. Through the windshield, he saw that the blue western sky had some cloud build up. The day had been cool, only a few degrees above freezing. Typical for the season.
