ONE GIANT STEPBy the last year of the sixties, America appeared to be breaking up. Hippies. Free love. Draft-dodging. Pot-smoking. Riots. The war in Vietnam was dividing the nation. The Russians were miles ahead of the Americans in space technology. They had sent the first satellite into orbit around the earth... the first man in orbit... the first man on a space-walk... NASA, the American space program, on the other hand, was floundering. According to President Kennedy in his famous 1961 speech, the Americans would have to pull out all the stops to put a man on the moon before the decade was out. And it had to be done, no matter what.
