"You're really doing this?" Maze sniggered as she watched Saint wear camouflage. This was the first day of her training under General Pius, whom she later found out was Sandro's Uncle.
"As if I had a choice. This is the only way I can keep my eye on Sandro without questions." Saint put her foot up to lace her combat boots.
"Is this about Eli's threat?" Lili asked with her mouth full of a club sandwich, which was almost inaudible.
Saint nodded in front of her laptop. She fixed her shirt and modelled the uniform. "How do I look?" she asked, smiling.
"I'll f**k you." Maze was the first one to answer. Saint shook her head and smiled. "Thank you, Maze. I got to go. Sandro will drive me to the campground."
"Hey babe, let's just kill Eli," Lili suggested right before she ended the call.
"Don't touch Eli. He's still family." Lili rolled her eyes. Saint just laughed and closed her laptop.
Honestly, she's quite excited about what's going to happen. She should take this opportunity to gain more hand-to-hand combat skills.
"You ready?" Sandro asked as he peeked inside their bedroom. He found his wife dressed in green camouflage. The uniform suits her well. An electrifying emotion filled his heart. She's not even tempting him, but his body reacted as it pleased, like a teenager with raging hormones.
"How do I look?" She asked while smiling. She excitedly twirled to show Sandro her combat uniform. He cleared his throat and said, "Good," and walked out of the room.
Saint smiled broader and skipped her way downstairs. Sandro was waiting for her in his Jeep. Her smile never left the whole duration of the ride.
Sandro, on the downside, couldn't calm himself. He felt uneasy that Saint would undergo very critical tactical training. He was a ranger, so he knew how hard the training would be.
They got out of the car. Sandro saluted the person waiting for them at the camp entrance. "General Pius."
General Pius stood as tall as Sandro. He is in his late 50s, but he aged well, like fine wine. Badges and insignia almost filled his uniform. He is so cool! Saint thought.
"I'll take good care of your wife," General Pius said and tapped Sandro's shoulder.
Sandro nodded in acknowledgement and turned his head to face Saint, who was all red and giddy. "Are you okay?" Concern laced his eyes. He has this gut feeling that something will happen.
"Uhuh," Saint hummed and smiled more.
"Should I stay with you?" Sandro softly caressed her reddened cheeks. He felt the heat coming out of it. He looked intently at her face.
Their own world was crushed when they heard General Pius's laughter beside them. "Sandro, you worry too much. I'll treat her the same way I treated you back in the day."
Upon hearing this, Sandro's eyes darkened. His uncle was never lenient with him—he was stricter. "I trust you to treat her fairly," he said in a cold tone. It was far different from how he just spoke with Saint.
"It'll only be for a few days. Don't worry about me. I'm good at making friends," Saint immediately said once she felt Sandro's grip on her waist tighten. Trust me.
Unexpected by everyone, Sandro leaned in for a kiss before letting go of her. "Find ways to contact me if you need anything," he whispered in her ear.
General Pius watched them from the side. He smiled inwardly as he saw how territorial his nephew was towards his wife.
Saint's cheeks heated more. She wasn't able to respond because Sandro fled instantly back to his car and sped out. Once she lost sight of his car, her eyes glimmered with mischief.
"I'll have Lance Corporal Sine show you around." She nodded her head as a sign of respect and walked side by side with the corporal.
The place was an answer to the stereotypical definition of military campgrounds. There was a large clearing in the middle, which she assumed was used for assemblies. Trees surrounded the place, and a few barracks could be seen from afar. She might be staying in one of those for the next days to come.
Sine made her familiar with the place and helped her settle in one of the barracks. "This will be your schedule for tomorrow. The Mayor specifically instructed you to focus your training on hand-to-hand combat and weaponry. You're free to roam and settle for today. See you at the assembly."
Saint took two steps backwards and saluted. Once dismissed, she unpacked her stuff. It took her not more than five minutes since she barely packed any. She decided to look around and make some friends.
Before she could make a move and introduce herself to a group of people, a very familiar man stopped in front of her. If not for his different haircut, she would think that he was Sandro.
"Marcus," she acknowledged his presence and was about to salute when Marcus reached for her hand and kissed the back of it. Everyone looking at them bawled their eyes out of surprise. How could the petrifying Lieutenant General Bardin bow and kiss an unknown woman's hand?
"What have you done for my brother to send you to a boot camp?' he asked curiously with a smug grin plastered on his face.
Saint felt the lingering intense look of the people around, but she didn't show any care at all. "I'm training to be his bodyguard," she said proud and loud.
Marcus did not anticipate her answer at all. His grin widened. "You really are a mystery, Miss Fonseca," he said, not acknowledging the change in her last name.
Her stance stiffened. "You don't like me," she paused before looking at his rank, "Lieutenant General Bardin."
To her surprise, Marcus laughed heartily. His boisterous laughter gathered more audience. Everyone was in awe of the scene to behold. "On the contrary, I like you, a lot."
