The beeping of the alarm clock woke me up. 7:15 as always. I threw myself together in some ripped jeans and a cold shoulder shirt. I looked at my shoulder-length brownish red hair in the mirror and then rested on the green eyes that stared back at me. It was the only thing I ever liked. My shocking green eyes. I grabbed my school bag and ran down the stairs. This was my first day at the pack's public school. It took years for me and my caretaker to convince my dad to let me go. He finally agreed last week when I told him no one even knew their future Luna/Alpha and I should start building those relationships with my peers. How could he argue I was right? I was so excited yet so nervous, I only ever left the packhouse for training and meetings. I knew war strategies and Alpha/Luna duties like the back of my hand. Thanks to my witchy caretaker, I also knew a little herbal magic.
I caught the scent of banana pancakes, my absolute favorite. To my surprise, my dad was standing at the oven instead of the omegas that usually cooked breakfast.
"Alpha Lucas." I chimed playfully, he hated it when I was formal.
"Ah, future Luna Harper, ready for her first day I suppose?" He questioned not looking in my direction but concentrating on flipping the slightly burnt pancake on the oven.
I walked up next to him and flipped it with ease. I sprayed the pan again and hip bumped him out of the way. " I am ready for my first day,. I figured I'd walk since you wanted me to lay low."
"Ya, not happening." My caretaker scoffed as she came around the corner. "I'm taking you and picking you up." She twirled her keys playfully in her hand but her face was serious.
"Ugh fine, whatever. You two know perfectly well I'll be fine and can handle myself. Plus, I'm the only wolf that's ever shifted before I was 18. What are a bunch of wolfless teens gonna do to me!?" I aggressively took a bite out of a pancake.
"You are NOT to shift under any circumstances in front of anyone outside of the council! If this is the attitude your going to have, I will not let you walk out of that door this morning!" My father's Alpha voice boomed throughout the kitchen.
"Yes sir." I obediently bowed my head, not wanting to ruin my chances of getting out of this fancy prison.
"On that note, we should go before you single-handedly change your father's mind. Alpha Lucas, we will be home from training at 6." My caretaker broke the tension and headed for the door. I snatched up my bag and followed her to her car. It was old but absolutely my dream car. She drove a fully restored Tiffany Blue VW Corrado.
"You know, I'm almost 18 and don't know how to drive." I commented quietly, almost hoping she didn't hear.
"With your father's permission I'll teach you, but otherwise I value both our lives way to much to sneak behind his back."
I got into the car and we drove the rest of the way in silence. My excitement turned to nervousness the closer we got. Was I ready for this? Could I even make friends? Everyone I had contact with was older and apart of the council. I already knew our history inside and out, the surrounding packs to. Even the prophecy of Selena reborn. Math and writing came easily. Anything I'd learn would just be extra practice at this point.
"Were here Harper, quit overthinking. You are the future Luna and you are plenty capable of making friends." My witchy caretaker looked at me with a sly smile. "I've seen the future little wolf, you are a courageous and noble leader. This is the only thing standing in your way and it is nothing to what you will accomplish."
"Wait what?" I was already half way out of the car and shutting the door as she finished her 2nd sentence. She zoomed off, leaving me standing there confused.
Slowly, I made my way to the front office still confused by what she had said.
"Future Luna Harper, I see you've arrived!" A chunky curly-haired blonde behind the counter half shouted at me.
"Please call me Harper." I nervously responded as a few students in the office stopped to gawk at me.
"Of course, of course, I'll try to remember. Here is your schedule and Zander here will take you to your first class. I'm sure you've met the beta's son before." She had such a kind smile, but it was oblivious to my precious isolation. Looking at the beta's son, he looked much like his father who I had met. Black hair and tanned skin. Brown eyes. Your average buff kid, nothing special.
"Zander Hoffman at your service, Luna... I mean Harper." He read my face as he reached for my hand. We shook hands and he guided the way, talking way to much. Maybe he was just as nervous as I was. "I'm happy to show you around, since we're gonna be working together soon anyway, my dad says your almost 18. We have the same class before lunch. If you want, you can eat with me and my friends. I know this is your first day so I can introduce you. I dont mind." He had stopped and opened the door for me, the bell hadn't rang but I could see a couple of kids sitting inside the classroom already. An athletic looking blonde was shooting daggers at me as I entered the classroom. I glared back, sending my Alpha energy into the room. She and everyone else immediately looked at the floor.
"Lu- I mean Harper, could you... umm please tone it down a notch." My future beta was the only one able to speak.
"OH um yea, sorry I'm not used to such disrespect from lower ranks." I was surprised by my own strength, and this was definitely not the way to make friends. "Oops." I mumbled.
Zander started introducing me. He pointed to the blonde first, who looked more shocked than angry now. "That's Catherine, your future gamma, and hopefully, my fated mate. These are Austin and Andrew twins and two of our best warriors as of now, and Elaine is your future strategist. Basically, the future members of your council when you take over."
Catherine stood, her head still lowered in respect. "I apologize Luna Harper, I didn't know..." She trailed off.
"It's okay let's start off new from here!" I tried to smile but the energy around her, reaked of disrespect. Suddenly I realized something. I had never been able to smell energy before. I looked at Zander. "Zander can I talk to you for a moment, as my beta." I smiled at my future gamma sweetly. I had a pack to run, I wasn't worried about love or mates. Zander was about to speak but the bell rung and before I knew it the classroom was flooded with students. This class was not going to go fast enough.
