Chapter 4:Twisted wedding bells

1237 Words
Ava stepped into the grand wedding venue, her eyes widened in surprise as she caught sight of her father dressed in a sharp suit, standing at the front of the room with a proud smile on his face. She couldn't believe what she was seeing. Hadn't she just hung up on him after their heated argument? "Dad?" Ava whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the crowd. Her father turned to face her, his eyes brimming with emotion. "Ava, my dear, I'm so glad you came to your senses," he said, his voice filled with pride. "I knew you wouldn't let me down. Now, let's not keep your bridegroom waiting, shall we?" Ava's mind reeled with confusion as her father extended his arm, offering it to her as if nothing had happened. She hesitated for a moment, struggling to process the sudden change in her father's demeanor. But then she caught sight of Adrian and Christopher standing side by side at the altar, and everything clicked into place. Adrian, her husband. Christopher, her childhood nemesis. The pieces of the puzzle fell into place with a sickening clarity, and Ava's heart sank as she realized the truth. She had been played, and manipulated by both men in a game. Anger surged through Ava as she turned to confront her father. "What is this, Dad?" she demanded, her voice shaking with fury. "What kind of sick joke are you playing?" But her father only smiled, his expression infuriatingly calm. "There's no joke, Ava," he replied. "You signed the contract marriage. Now, it's time to fulfill your end of the bargain." Ava's blood ran cold as she realized the gravity of her father's words. She had thought she was marrying Adrian out of love, but in reality, she had been nothing more than a pawn in her father's scheme to save their family's fortune. Tears welled up in Ava's eyes as she struggled to come to terms with the cruel reality of her situation. How could her own father betray her like this? How could she have been so blind to the truth? But before she could voice her protests, the preacher's voice cut through the air, drawing everyone's attention to the front of the room. "We are gathered here today to witness the union of Ava Lovato and Christopher Hill in holy matrimony," the preacher announced, his words echoing through the room like a death knell. Ava's heart stopped as she stared at Christopher, her mind reeling with disbelief. This couldn't be happening. She had said yes to marrying Adrian, hadn't she? She had said yes to him, exchanged vows with him in that club, and pledged her love to him. How could she be standing here now, about to marry the one person she had sworn to never speak to again? As the preacher's words hung in the air like a heavy fog, Ava felt as though the ground had been pulled out from beneath her feet. She stood frozen, her mind racing, trying to make sense of the entire thing. "Stop," Ava interrupted. "Stop the wedding." The preacher paused, his eyebrows furrowing, confused. "What's the matter, my dear?" Ava glanced between Adrian and Christopher, her heart pounding in her chest. "I... I need to understand. Am I... am I getting married to two men at the same time?" The question hung in the air, a heavy silence settling over the room as everyone turned to look at Christopher and Adrian, awaiting their response. Christopher stepped forward, his expression unreadable. "Ava, please, give me a few minutes. I need to clear the air." Ava hesitated, unsure of what to do. But before she could protest, Christopher took her hand and led her away from the altar, Adrian and her father following close behind. They entered a small room off to the side of the grand hall, the door closing behind them with a soft click. Ava's heart raced as she turned to face Christopher, her mind buzzing with questions. "What is this, Christopher?" she demanded. Christopher sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Ava, I know this must be confusing for you. But please, hear me out." Christopher took a deep breath, "Ava, I need you to understand that everything I did, this is business," he began. Ava listened, her heart heavy with sorrow and anger. She wanted to lash out at Christopher, to scream and cry and demand answers. But she knew that wouldn't solve anything. She needed to stay calm, to think clearly if she had any hope of getting out of this mess. "What do you mean, Christopher?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. "What is all of this?" Christopher took a deep breath, his gaze never leaving hers. "Ava, Adrian is my best friend," he explained. "He had a little crush on you, but he was too afraid to tell you. When he found out about the contract marriage, he begged me to help him. So we made a deal. I allowed him to have a night of talking to you. Ava's head spun with disbelief. She couldn't believe what she was hearing. Adrian, her to-be husband, his best friend? It was too much to process. "And you went along with this?" she demanded, her voice filled with anger. Christopher nodded. Ava felt a lump forming in her throat as she struggled to come to terms with the enormity of Adrian's betrayal. She had trusted him, had believed that he was different from her father, different from all the other men in her life. But she had been wrong. "And now what?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. "What am I supposed to do?" Christopher's gaze softened, "You have to go through with the marriage. If you don't, your family will lose everything. Your father made sure of that." Ava's heart sank as she realized the truth of Christopher's words. She was trapped, caught. She had no choice but to go through with the wedding, to marry a man she didn't love, all to save her family from ruin. She glanced at Adrian, standing quietly in the corner of the room, and hissed. Maybe, just maybe, she could find a way out of this mess. *** She looked into Christopher's eyes and saw a glint of triumph shining there, a cruel reminder of the power he held over her. He had orchestrated this entire charade, luring her into his web of lies with promises of wealth, only to trap her in a nightmare of his own making. Ava's mind raced as she tried to make sense of it all. She couldn't marry Christopher. She wouldn't marry Christopher. But with her father's threats hanging over her head, she knew she had no choice but to go through with the wedding. As the preacher began the ceremony, Ava felt a surge of desperation rising within her. She had to find a way out of this, a way to escape the suffocating grip of her father and Christopher's manipulation. But before she could formulate a plan, the preacher's voice reached its crescendo, and Ava found herself standing face to face with Christopher, her fate sealed by a contract she had signed in a moment of weakness. As they exchanged vows, Ava's heart shattered into a million pieces, her dreams of love and happiness and money crumbling to dust at her feet.
