The day went by slowly as I daydreamed about my time away, not paying any attention in class. I got called on several times to answer questions I didn't listen to in the first place, only to get embarrassing looks from the other students, probably thinking I was stupid to not know the answer. I didn't care what they thought, my mind was only thinking of Keegan. I haven’t seen him anymore today and I still wonder what got into him before. He seemed to always be around the corner waiting for me to get in trouble or something, or at least that’s all I have done yet.
The bell rang and I packed my books away into my bag, ready to leave, when Mrs. Thompson asked me to wait afterwards. With a heavy sigh, I fell down on my seat again, glaring at all the students already leaving. When they eventually left, Mrs. Thompson had closed the door, she looked at me with a bothered look on her face, like there was something wrong with me. “Are you alright Daphne?” She asked me, confirming my suspicions about her facial expression. “Yeah I’m alright” I just said, looking outside at the trees. “You seem a bit off” .
“ Yeah well I have homework to do” I simply said, took my stuff and walked past Mrs. Thompson to head home. She didn’t say anything to me, leaving so rudely. I could feel eyes staring at my neck but I didn’t want to talk to her anymore, there was nothing to talk about.
On my way home, all I could think about was Keegan's actions. Why did he just leave? My lonely walk didn’t last long as an arm grabbed me from behind a tree and dragged me behind it with them. I shut my eyes closed, too scared of what was happening, holding my breath for the pain to come.
This was becoming a habit of action, since everyone thinks they can treat me however they want before I become alpha.
But surprisingly, every movement was smooth and I didn’t hit anything in the process. Now curious about who grabbed me in the first place, I opened my eyes slowly to see a very relaxed manly posture in front of me, brown boots, black pants and a white sweatshirt. The eyes my own made contact with were silver and his hair was jetblack. That was all I needed to know who the man was.
“Don’t ever grab me like that” I said as I slapped his arm.
“I need to talk to you,” Keegan said.
“Okay, talk”
“Not here” he said while walking to his black koenigsegg that he had parked not far from here on a dirt road. I stood there in shock as he walked up to the driver's side, to open the car door.
“H…how?” was all I said while pointing at the car.
“I will tell you another time, are you coming?” he asked, still looking at me.
“Where are we going?”
“Just around the city”
The first ten minutes were silent. I watched the trees pass one by one until I didn’t recognize the area anymore.
“Um, where are we going?” I was a little panicked.
Keegan was looking ahead, giving me a quick look before turning his head back forward.
“I want to talk to you in private”.
“That wasn’t my question”.
He inhaled a deep breath before he started talking again.
“I am driving towards the end of the border to show you a place that I like. It’s quiet and peaceful there”.
I sank down in the passenger seat just watching the scenery pass by and before I knew it I fell asleep.
Feeling something nudged me to wake up, I opened my eyes to realize we had stopped. I sat up and was greeted with the most beautiful scenery I have ever seen on our pack territory. I didn’t believe it was real so I pinched myself in the arm to be sure and it made Keegan snicker. I turned to look at him, surprised that he could laugh.
“We are here” he said with a small smile and stepped out of the car to walk towards the wonderful waterfall that could be seen from the car. I watched him from the car, hesitant to get out, but there was no reason for me to chicken out to avoid a conversation with Keegan.
He had sat down at an old wooden bench on the edge of the lake next to the waterfall when I approached and I was still confused on why he had brought me here.
“So what did you want to talk about?” I asked him bluntly when I sat down next to him.
“How are you gonna defend your title?” he said, turning to face me. I was taken aback at how forward he was with the question, not giving me any kind of warning. The question came so suddenly and my mind couldn’t focus on an answer to the question.
It took some seconds, until he broke the silence since I couldn’t give him an answer.
“I didn’t mean to be rude, but from what I saw, that won’t be enough to fight if you get more than two challengers” he said with a straight face.
Did he think I was weak?
“What are you suggesting? That I won’t win?” I said, now getting a little pissed that he questioned my powers.
“That is what I am wondering” he answered back. Still with a straight and serious face.
I just huffed and stood up to walk away from this weird, mysterious and judgmental man, now getting really tired of his behavior.
“You couldn’t defend yourself against Darson, or did you like what he did to you?”, that hit my last nerve. I stomped my way to him, only stopping when I was barely one meter from him.
“Are you that blind that you think I liked that?” I said to him while my eyes started to water.
“You didn’t do anything about it, even though I think you could”, he said, while looking at my now flustered face.
“I didn’t do anything about it because I couldn’t let them know I could take them easily. I want them to TRY to take my title so I can put them back in their place”, I said with venom in my words.
He didn’t respond and that was my queue to walk back home. I turned and started to walk back to where we came from.
“I can drive you back” he shouted out, since I had walked a few meters already, but I didn’t respond. I just kept walking.
It had been one hour since I started walking home and my mind was so loud and all over the place in the cold silent forest that I didn’t notice I had gotten lost. I took my eyes up for the first time from the dirt road that I had been traveling on and didn’t recognize my surroundings. Panic started to creep up my back as I heard unfamiliar howls nearby. They’d noticed me.
I quickly turned around and ran the way I came from but the thuds of paws hitting the ground only became louder and louder for each step that I took. I knew I couldn’t outrun them in human form and if today was the day that I died, I couldn’t die while trying to run away.
The thuds came closer and closer, and upon turning around one wolf came sliding towards me trying to stop. The moment he stopped, his nose was almost touching mine.
His fur was a golden brown and was shining in the moonlight, his eyes were piercing blue and his expression was furious. This got me snapping back to reality as he made a loud and unfriendly growl, making me fall backwards to the ground, not expecting rogues.
There were about 7 rogues standing around me, all growling and snapping their teeth while slowly making their way towards me. I saw the light coming for me. This was it.
I closed my eyes, ready to be torn apart. I heard wolves growl and whimper in pain, but nothing touched me. Was I already dead?
