CHAPTER 002
STORM’S POV:
“WHO ARE YOU?!” My mouth, no, my whole body was frozen on the spot as I stared up at the bulky frame of the large man before me. Skeptical jade eyes glared down at me, lips down turned into a displeased frown. “I said who are you? And what is the meaning of this?!” He snatched my wig off the ground and shook it in front of my face.
Oh no, I was freaking dead now.
No! Storm, think….. you can get out of this. You just have to think of a very convincing lie.
Without thinking twice I got down on my knees, baring my neck in submission. If there was anything a werewolf loved it was respect and reverence. I just hoped this would work.
“Please sir, forgive me. I wasn't watching where I was going. I'm so sorry for bumping into you.” My forehead was on the cold tile now, and my head, which was covered by a wig cap, hid my real hair from his view.
“That is not what I am talking about human. Why are you wearing a wig? Is there something you're hiding?” I rolled my eyes and almost laughed at the situation I had put myself in. I should have just dyed my f*****g hair blonde or something.
Well, I guess I had to improve my acting skills. Werewolves could smell things like fear, lust, and even lies. It has something to do with their heightened senses. I have no idea how it works.
I quickly think of things that would instantly instill fear in me, like my worst enemy, the flying roach. I began to cry remembering the one time I was attacked by that wild animal. I swear Master is supposed to add those damn creatures to his Grade A list. “I am not hiding anything, sir. I am just trying not to draw attention to myself here. My mother is sick. And I need money to treat her. The thing is, before I came here, I had heard stories of my kind being taken after the festival to become…….” I didn't complete the statement, I'm sure he understood what I was saying.
“I'm just trying to avoid drawing attention to myself.” That wasn't a lie, well not everything.
I just hope he bought it.
There was silence as I stayed bowed to the ground, my neck was cramping, and my knees were screaming in pain, but it wasn't anything I couldn't handle.
“Get up,” forcing more tears out of my eyes. I rose to my feet but kept my head bowed. It was disrespectful to look into the eyes of another wolf, especially one of high rank.
“Look at me,” I did as I was told, my eyes consciously scanning his features as quickly as I could before meeting his eyes again.
“If you're going to use a wig, use it well. If I was another wolf, trust me, your little sob story wouldn't even move me. Understood?”
“Yes sir!” I bowed quickly, fingers wringing together as I waited for him to dismiss me. Instead of doing that, the werewolf just sidestepped and walked away leaving me standing in the middle of the hallway.
“Thank God!” I whispered to myself as my chest stopped its insistent pounding. If my cover was truly blown I would have been saying hello to my ancestors right now. Whoever they were.
With a huff, I moved back towards the living room to complete my work. It was going to be a long day.
____________
The mating festival was going to be held for a week. The festival consisted of three sections of activities. The first was the Great Hunt; the second was the courtship, then for the last day, which was also the main event, ‘THE BONDING.’
We were currently in the large kitchen which was located on the ground floor of the castle. Meals of different cuisine from different countries, lay spread on humongous banquet-style tables. It was like we were cooking for the end of the world.
I sighed and wiped the sweat dripping from my forehead as I kneaded the dough for the bread we were about to put in the oven. I hated the fact that I was doing this just because some stupid wolf was wanted dead. I slammed the dough down in anger and almost growled out my frustration.
I've not even seen the guy; how was I supposed to kill him before the weekend?
“Danika,” Oh hell no. My gaze moved in the direction of the annoying girl calling my name.
Fiona approached me with a sickly sweet smile on her face. Honestly, she looked better without smiling but I guess her friends would never tell her that. They weren't her real friends then. Real friends tell you the truth like Brandon. I missed that big oaf.
“What do you want Fiona? I'm busy?” I said, stating the obvious. The smile on her face fell, and her true colors bled through. “I can see that.” I gave her a look that said well stop bothering me and went on with attacking the dough. The stupid thing wasn't cooperating.
“Why was Beta Matteo talking to you?”
“Uhmmm, who?” she gave me a Are you serious look, and I just gazed at her dryly.
Two gasps came from behind Fiona making me feel more annoyed about the whole situation. I sure hope it wasn't showing on my face. I was supposed to be keeping a low profile. It was hard to act timid in front of these obnoxious girls though. They made me want to tie their hair together and make them run in opposite directions until they pulled their scalps from their skull. Yeah, that would be nice to witness.
Without acknowledging her minions, I kept my face neutral and began to speak, but she cut me off before I even opened my mouth.
“The high-rank werewolf you were speaking about in the hallway earlier today.”
Oh s**t, he was a Beta?
I suspected he was of high rank but I never knew he was that high up.
Burying my emotions down, I c****d my head to the side and replied. “Oh, that? He was just asking for directions. Nothing important.” I shrugged my shoulders, eyes down on my work again.
“Well, I hope that's true, Danika. We don't want you getting in trouble with the bloodhound pack. That would mean trouble for us too.” Something kept poking at the back of my brain, like an essential reminder but I couldn't dwell on it for long. Fiona was already speaking again.
“And you do know how important this work is for all of—” Ok, I've heard enough of this bull.
“Look Fiona, I have no idea what you're on about. I'm trying to work here. You should, too, if you don't want the Head maid catching us and you getting in real trouble.” This seemed to snap her back to reality. She gave me a sneer and scoffed, walking away with her minions following right behind her.
I sighed and got back to work but suddenly stopped after several seconds as my brain started to put the missing pieces together.
Beta…..
Matteo…….
Bloodhound pack…..
Mission……
Oh my days, if Beta Matteo was the Beta I had run into earlier and he was really from the Bloodhound pack……that only means one thing.
Terror Noctis' was here.
