CHAPTER 004
LUCIEN’S POV:
I let the shower rinse off all the grime and sweat from yesterday night. As usual, I didn't even get a wink of sleep. I was accustomed to it. It had become a norm. Like a daily routine.
Muffled voices from outside made me self-aware. Subconsciously I concentrated on my senses until I heard Matteo’s voice speak up. He was asking someone for their name, probably one of the workers. Choosing to ignore the conversation, I concentrated back on my shower, the voices a distant sound around me.
When I was done, I wrapped a robe around me and walked out. From my side view, I noticed Matteo by the window. I ignored him and walked straight to my wardrobe.
Seconds passed and he was still standing there, just staring without a word.
“You know, if I didn't know you, Matteo, I would find your staring absolutely creepy. What's this about?” I asked dryly, pulling my hunting gear out of my wardrobe.
“You dreamt of her again didn't you?”
My body grew rigid for a second before my tense muscles relaxed. I pulled the black wife beater over my head and down my chest without acknowledging his statement.
Matteo moved from his position by the window, and I heard my bed dip, meaning he was sitting in it.
“Get off my bed, Matteo. It was just made.” Matteo didn't move like I expected. He was the only one with the audacity to defy me. That was because I let him.
“You haven't answered my question Alpha.” A deep growl resonated within my chest, telling him to drop it.
“Fine, fine, but this conversation isn't over yet.” he surrendered and got to his feet to leave. I finally turned around to acknowledge him, he was already dressed and ready to go.
“Meet me in the living room for breakfast.” He finally walked out leaving me all alone in the room. I sighed and moved to my suitcase. I unlocked it and pulled out my katana case. It's what I used to hunt so I didn't have to use my wolf form. My wolf was very intimidating to look at, and as much as I would love to see the look on the other wolf's faces as I graced them with its magnificent beauty, I wasn't ready for the attention it would most definitely garner.
Slipping the blades through the black shoulder-back belt I had on, I strode into the main suite. As an important guest in the palace, I was given one of the VIP rooms. Not that I cared what room they gave to me. I just came here in hopes of finding something. Something that belonged to me. That was made for me. That I've been waiting and searching for, for years now. With no possible progress whatsoever.
With a grimace, I approached the small corner that serves as a mini dining room. Matteo was already seated and swiping through his phone; as my right-hand man and Beta, he was in charge of almost all my deals and involvements. It was his job.
“Any news of when everyone is supposed to have arrived,” I asked as I poured myself a cup of coffee. I sipped my bitter drink without sugar as I waited for his reply.
“The whole list is almost checked out Alpha. So hopefully today everyone will be present.”
I nodded my head and avoided eye contact with Matteo. I knew what he was going to ask if I looked into his eyes. As if he could read my mind he suddenly asked. “Still can't feel anything?”
Without looking up at him, I grunted out a no.
He hummed and went back to typing, the insistent clicking sound was annoying the f**k out of me. Normally, I was able to block everything out if I wanted, but right now,w, I was on the verge of wolfing out.
My chair scraped against the ground as I stood on my feet quickly. “I'm going out for some air,” I announced; without waiting for a reply, I walked out of the building and outside the palace grounds and inhaled the clean, fresh air, enjoying how it filled my lungs. I could feel that insistent pounding headache begin to form at the back of my head. Demons banging against my skull to be let out.
I ignored them and walked further into the grounds until I arrived at the meeting point for the hunting games. When I arrived everyone was already prepared and waiting.
“Ahhh finally, the Terror himself has arrived.” Instead of rolling my eyes at the stupid, long overdue nickname I opted for glaring at the puny pup of an Alpha who dared look me in the eye. I watched him slowly shrink into himself as he took a timid step back. I smirked in satisfaction and approached my Beta Matteo. He gave me a side eye and shook his head in warning. This time I did roll my eyes. He acted like he was my father. Sometimes it was annoying.
“I did nothing wrong, the prick deserved it,” I said through the mind link.
“I know that Alpha, but we shouldn't be trying to pick fights with other packs. The public display of power was definitely drawing attention. We are here for one reason alone. You want the council kicking us out before that is accomplished.”
He was right, the stupid f*****g council and the Alpha king were a pain in the neck. I definitely wasn't ready for their nagging.
“Let's just get this day over with.” Matteo took off his shirt as the Alpha king's warriors, who were in charge of leading the hunt, took off into the woods in their wolf form. I sighed and grabbed both my blades, which lay in a cross formation on my back; they came out smoothly with a satisfying ring, making me smile.
“Alpha Lucien.” my attention turned to the remaining wolves who hadn't transformed yet, all staring at me like I was a piece of art in a museum. I raised a brow at them in question and one of them began to speak. “You're dressed fully in combat attire. Won't that be hard when fighting a bear or manticore?” I shrugged indifferently. I'm sure they were ticked off by my unbothered demeanor. Most people who knew me were already used to it.
“I'm not transforming.”
“You're not?”
“No,” I stated simply, ending the conversation.
“Oh, well, good luck then.” I wanted to laugh and say they needed it more than I did, but instead, I gave my Beta, who was still by my side, the signal to shift. He had been waiting for me to finish my conversation. Matteo didn't waste time. He transformed smoothly into a large red-brown wolf with white fur underneath his belly. With a roar, we took off into the woods, and the hunt began fully.
We weren't even halfway in when a loud, piercing scream echoed through the woods, startling everyone who recognized the sound.
“Did you hear that?” Matteo asked through the mind link.
“I'm sure everyone did Matteo.” Matteo's wolf huffed and reduced his speed to a trot.
I matched his pace as we ran in the direction of the sound we heard. I'm sure everyone was already headed in that direction.
Another loud, piercing scream broke out. This time, a voice followed.
“Help!”
