THE ALPHA’S STRUGGLE

CHAPTER 006 LUCIEN'S POV: If I knew I was going to get mauled by a lamia on my first morning here. I would have simply chosen to stay in the confines of my chambers for the rest of the day. “Icarus, now would be the right moment to wolf out.” I sang sarcastically to my wolf. I could feel him in the back of my head, completely ignoring me and the situation we were in. Well, I was on my own now. Closing my eyes, I concentrated on the link with my Beta; I could hear him screaming out my name as they struggled against the creature of darkness. They were no match for her, but I was. And I would make her regret playing mind games with me. Using the face of my soulmate was a deal breaker for me. Clutching onto Matteo’s desperate voice, I pulled myself out of the trance-like state I was trapped in, smiling at my victory. The creature was too busy fighting the others to notice me, so I swiftly attacked, using my speed to my advantage and slashing her across her back. The creature screeched like a banshee, almost deafening everyone in the vicinity. The rest of the wolves who couldn't handle her screams dropped to the ground, blocking their ears to protect them. Instead of blocking out the noise, I ignored it, sending another strike and aiming for her head this time. Unfortunately, she ducked away, tutting and shaking her head in amusement. “I underestimated you, child of the moon goddess. But let's see if your goddess can save you from the hell I'm about to put you through.” She spits, her skin slowly taking on a greenish hue. Her mask failed to hold. “I'm already in hell, b***h!” I roared, swinging my blade at her again; just as I struck, she immediately transformed into her real form, once-innocent features melting away to show her true nature. A creature of dark magic that feeds off people's desires. A Lamia. The creature suddenly dashed at me but was pinned to the ground by a pack of werewolves that aimed for her legs, arms, and body. She shrieked as she tried to shake them off, using her claws and sharp teeth to her advantage. I used the opportunity of the distraction to plan a surprise attack; shoving my swords back in their sheaths, I ran behind her towering form and propelled myself up the tree behind her, landing successfully on the top with her large head in my view. With a growl, I took out only one of the swords from the sheath and jumped from the top, plunging the weapon deep in her head. She screamed again, thrashing and trying to throw me off. I held on tightly to the sword, using my agility to my advantage; I twisted the knife, hearing the satisfying squelch of flesh ripping apart. I took the other knife out of its sheath and plunged it deep into her skull again. She suddenly stilled after a few seconds, and her large body dropped to the ground with a loud thud. “Alpha!” I looked up from the creature's garish state and stared at my second-in-command with a smirk on my face. “Piece of cake, don't you think?” I joked, patting the dead creature's head. Matteo just stared at me with a look I recognized all too well. He was definitely resisting the urge to roll his eyes at me. I laughed as he approached the creature, noticing that he was only dressed in a pair of shorts. He probably changed after he transformed. Matteo climbed on top of the creature skilfully and retrieved my swords before getting back down. He had a disgusted look on his face as he stared at the greenish liquid dripping from the swords. “Good luck, kid.“ I slapped his shoulders as I walked past him and back to the palace, done with this bloody hunt. ________________ It was late into the evening when the hunting crew returned with the games they caught. Including the Lamia. A bonfire was held so they could roast the meat and rejoice over their victory. I didn't care what they did, though. I wanted to rest. Which was why I was currently ignoring Matteo's speech. “Everyone knows you killed it; they just want to see their saviour.” “I am no one's saviour.” I groaned, rolling on my stomach and adjusting the pillows on my bed. “Well, if you aren't their saviour, you're definitely their terror.” “If you like your head on your shoulders, Matteo, you will refrain from saying that ridiculous name in front of me.” I could literally hear his eyes roll in their sockets. “You don't need to spend more than five minutes there, Alpha; they just want to see that you attended the ceremony. It would be an insult to the king if you rejected his invitation.” “Like I said, I don't care,” I replied with finality in my voice. I heard Matteo sigh before footsteps approached the bed, and it dipped. “Alpha, this is our only chance to find her before it gets worse. We need every opportunity to socialize. Even if it physically hurts your pride.” I opened my eyes and stared at him, exhaustion on my features. I knew he could see I was tired. Mentally and emotionally. If I hadn't found this woman this year, I wouldn't be referred to as the ‘Terror Noctis,’ but instead, people would know me as ‘The mad wolf.’. “Fine, I'll go, but once I get bored, I'm leaving.” “As you wish, Sire.” Matteo flashed me a smile as he approached my wardrobe and started to scan through it. The moment we arrived at the bonfire, I headed straight to one of the maids serving drinks and picked up two shots from the tray. She gawked at me weirdly, but I ignored her blatant staring and threw the drinks back, enjoying the burning sensation down my throat to my chest. I placed the glasses back and headed towards where the king was seated. Just as I was about to approach him, the sickening scent of jasmine and Gucci perfume invaded my nostrils, the familiar scent making me freeze as unpleasant memories of a woman I had forgotten existed infiltrated my brain. “Hello, Lucien, long time no see.” Ava, my ex-girlfriend, cooed.
