CHAPTER 005 LUCIEN’S POV: My feet carried me towards the screams with Matteo hot on my trail. My fist tightened around my katana blades as I ran, my heart thumping with each step I took. “Do you think it's a female in danger?” I asked Matteo through the mind link even though I had heard the sound of the voice. “It sounded like a female, Alpha,” Matteo commented dryly, and I almost laughed. He was fed up with me already, I guess. As we arrived at the location where we heard the noise coming from, my eyes narrowed in suspicion. There was a frail-looking female crouched with her back to a tree, her hair a black curtain around her frame. She had on a simple white dress that was soaked with blood, and her feet were bare. I scanned the area as the fresh scent of blood invaded my nostrils. All around her, werewolves were bleeding from their throats. Some were half dead, some already dead. But something didn’t sit well with this; something felt so wrong, but I couldn’t quite put my finger on it. “Matteo, get help now!” I ordered my second-in-command. When I didn't hear his reply through the link, I turned to look down at him and noticed he was frozen to the spot. He was probably analysing the situation himself. “Matteo!” I called again. “I said go get help.” He finally turned to look at me with his mouth spread in a snarl. “I can't leave your side, Alpha,” I glared at him, my eyes flashing crimson. “I am not asking,” without hesitation, he bowed his head in submission, grimacing slightly before bolting into the forest, leaving me all alone with the strange woman. I slipped my blades back in place as I approached her shaking frame gingerly. Careful not to scare her off. “Hey, are you okay?” I asked, keeping my voice barely above a whisper but steady so as not to scare her. She shook her head, her eyes crazed as she mumbled incoherent words. “It's going to kill us; it's going to kill us all.” She rushed out in panic, startling me a little. Her head snapped up, and I immediately noticed the colour of her eyes. They were a translucent colour, like a fish. It wasn't an odd colour, but it was also rare to see someone with such eyes. As I sniffed the air around her, I realised I couldn't detect a particular smell from her. Normally I could tell from a person's scent if they were human or werewolf. But her case was different. All I could smell was blood and raw fear. The girl was still staring in my direction, but her eyes were unfocused like she was in a daze of some sort. Maybe she was blind, but I wasn’t sure. “What's going to kill us?” She began to shuffle back as I moved closer, making me pause my movements immediately. “Don't be scared. I promise not to hurt you. I want to help you.” I stretched my hands out even though I doubted she could see me. “IF YOU WANT TO HELP ME, YOU HAVE TO FIND IT.” She shouted, her hands pulling her hair aggressively. My Wolf started getting restless from her abnormal behaviour. She didn't trust her and neither did I. But I couldn't leave a helpless female out here in the woods. “Can you tell me how you got here? Did the creature do this?” I gestured towards the m******e before us. One of the wolves I recognized as part of the hunting crew. “It did this, so find it. Find it before it kills us all.” She wailed, her dark hair swaying from side to side. Something told me to look at her features more closely, and as I did, I noticed something odd. If a creature was actually here, it had attacked everyone here and had aimed for their necks. All the dead wolves around her had their jugular veins ripped out. Everyone except her. She didn't even have a single cut or bruise on her body. Just blood on her clothes and in her hair. My back tensed as she suddenly started to move closer to me. No longer retreating to the tree in fear. Her mouth split into a crooked smile, showing off rows of sharp teeth stained red with blood. “Save us!” She demanded in an otherworldly voice. The sound bounced off the trees and made goosebumps rise on my arms. “Kill it!” My Wolf ordered in my mind. Already pissed off. I didn’t flatter and withdrew my blades immediately, ready to strike and cut her into pieces for daring to trick me. As I circled the unknown creature, I held my breath as a putrid smell started to emanate from her. I wished at that moment that I didn't have such high senses. It smelt like something died and was decaying. It was awful. I needed to end this now. I was about to attack her with my swords when she suddenly transformed right before my eyes. Dark beady eyes turned into two silver pools, and her once dark hair turned a shocking white-grey colour, almost silver but not quite. For some reason, she resembled the one woman who has been haunting my dreams for years now. The same woman I've been looking for and the reason I was at this mating ceremony this year. I paused mid-attack, my sword raised in the air as she approached me. My brain isn't functioning along with my body, completely paralysed and unresponsive at that moment. “Oh Lucien, I've missed you.” She cooed, dragging a dark, sharp claw across my cheek. I didn't even flinch at the action even though I wanted to retreat away, my body too frozen to react. “Alpha!” I heard Matteo's voice calling out for me, but it felt so far away. Like I was trapped in the corner of my mind with no way to escape this nightmare. I knew what this creature was at that very moment. It was Lamia, and it could transform into your greatest desires, feeding off your misery and suffering and making you its slave.
