CHAPTER ONE: THE FIRST GLANCE The morning sun cast a golden glow over the bustling streets of Detroit, where the city was already alive with the sounds of impatient car horns, vendors advertising their goods and hurried footsteps echoing on the side walk. For Ivy Adams, it was just another Monday. Standing in front of the mirror in her modest apartment, she adjusted the collar of her cream colored blouse and tied her long curly hair into a neat ponytail. At twenty-four, she had learned that life was less about dreams and more about survival. Her mother had died when she was sixteen, leaving her to care for her younger brother, Ethan. Their father had disappeared years earlier without a trace, forcing Ivy to become both sister and parent. She smiled weakly at Ethan as he rushed into the kitchen. " You're going to be late again," he teased, at stuffing bread into his mouth. ' I won't if someone stops eating like he's in a competition. He laughed. " I inherited my appetite". " From who?" " The invisible father." They both laughed, but the laughter quickly faded. Some jokes hurt more than they healed. Ivy grabbed her handbag and kisses Ethan's forehead. " Don't forget your assignment." " I won't" " And stay out of trouble" " No promises." Rolling her eyes, she stepped outside She had no idea that by the end of the day, her entire life would change forever. Across the city... A sleek black Rolls-Royce Phantom glided through the streets like royalty. Inside sat Damien Blackwood. At thirty two years old, Damien was one of the youngest billionaires in the country. His empire stretched across real estate, technology, oil investments, and luxury hotels. To the world, he was a genius. To his employees, he was feared. To his competitors, he was ruthless. And to the women who desperately wanted him........ He was completely uninterested. Damien rarely smiled. Rarely laughed. Rarely spoke unless necessary. His assistant often joked that even robots showed more emotion But nobody dared repeat the joke within his hearing. His icy gray eyes stared through the tinted window. " Cancel my afternoon meetings," he said. His assistant looked confused. " Sir?" " I need time to think". " Yes, Mr. Blackwood". The driver slowed as the traffic light turned red. Damien absentmindedly looked outside. Then... He saw her. A young woman hurried across the pedestrian crossing, clutching a stack of books to her chest as the wind blew strands of hair across her face. She wasn't wearing expensive clothes. She wasn't surrounded by bodyguards. She wasn't trying to attract attention. Yet... She held his gaze. For the first time in years.... Damien forgot to blink Something stirred inside him. Something unfamiliar. Something dangerous. The traffic light turned green. Cars behind them started honking. " Sir?" Damien didn't answer. His eyes remained on the disappearing figure. " Find her." His assistant frowned. " Excuse me?" " The woman who just crossed the road." " Sir... we don't even know who she is." Damien slowly turned. " That's why I pay you." The assistant swallowed nervously. " Yes, sir. Meanwhile..... Ivy reached Kingston Publishing House where she worked as a junior editor. She loved books. Stories had always been her escape. One day, she dreamed of becoming a bestselling author. Her best friend, Lily, rushed toward her. " You almost missed the meeting!" " I know". " You look exhausted." " I was helping Ethan study." Lily sighed. " You worry too much." " I have to." They entered the conference room. The company's director announced exciting news. " We've secured a publishing contract with Blackwood Holdings.". Gasps filled the room. Everybody knew the Blackwood name. It represented unimaginable wealth. " The CEO himself may visit this week." Except for Ivy. She simply returned to her desk. Names meant little to her. She had deadlines to meet. THREE FLOORS ABOVE..... A private security team entered the building. Within seconds, everyone stood. Damien Blackwood had arrived. His expensive Italian suit fit him perfectly. His polished shoes reflected the marble floor Employees whispered. Some admired him. Others feared him. Damien ignored everyone His cold expression never changed. Until .. He saw her again. Ivy was standing beside a bookshelf, completely unaware that someone was watching her. She laughed softly at something Lily whispered. The sound.... It was beautiful. Too beautiful. Damien's heartbeat quickened. He had spoken to presidents without emotion. But hearing one woman's laughter made his chest tighten. He didn't understand it. He didn't want to. Yet he couldn't look away. His assistant leaned closer. " Sir?" " Her name." " We're still investigating." " I want every detail." " Everything?" Damien's expression darkened. " Everything." Hours later A thick file landed on Damien's desk NAME: Ivy Grace Adams AGE: Twenty-four OCCUPATION: Junior Editor ADDRESS: 7428 Maplewood Avenue, Detroit FAMILY: One younger brother RELATIONSHIP STATUS: Single EDUCATION: First- Class Graduate in English Literature Damien slowly read every page. Then he read it again. And again He memorized her birthday. Her favorite café. The bus she took every morning. The route she walked home. The charity where she volunteered on Saturdays. He knew more about her in one afternoon than most people learned about someone in years. A strange smile touched his lips. " Interesting." That evening.... Ivy left work later than usual. The streets were quieter now. Streetlights flickered overhead. She didn't notice the black SUV parked across the road. She didn't notice the man sitting inside. Watching. Waiting. Damien rested one hand on the steering wheel. His eyes followed every movement she made. She stopped at a roadside fruit stall. She smiled warmly at the elderly woman selling oranges. She paid for more fruits than she needed. " You gave me too much change," she alsaid kindly. The old woman smiled. " God bless you, my daughter." Damien watched silently. She could have kept the extra money. Most people would have. But she returned it without hesitation Something about her fascinated him. She was different. Pure. Unaware of how extraordinary she seemed. And Damien wanted to know everything. Not because he needed to. Because he couldn't stop himself. Later that night ... Ivy layed in bed reading a novel Outside her apartment, rain began to fall. Thunder rumbled across the sky. She closed the curtains and turned off the light. Within minutes, she was asleep. Across the street..... A black SUV remaind parked beneath a tree. It's headlights were off. Inside sat Damien. His eyes never left the apartment window. He didn't know why he was there. He only knew he couldn't leave His assistant called. " Sir..... are you still outside?" " Yes." " Should I send security?" " No". " Will you be coming home?" Damien looked at the dark window. " No." He ended the call. For the first time in his life.... A business empire no longer occupied his thoughts On woman did. A woman who had never spoken to him. A woman who didn't know he existed. He whispered into the darkness. " You don't know it yet, Ivy..." ".... but you're mine." The rain poured harder, hiding the black SUV in the darkness as the city slept peacefully, unaware that a dangerous obsession had just begun.
