CHAPTER FIVE: CROSSING THE LINE

1411 Words
Ivy didn't sleep that night. She lay beneath the covers, staring at the ceiling while the events of the past few days replayed in her mind. The photograph. The anonymous messages. Damien Blackwood. Daniel Cole. And now the revelation that the name Elena Cole was somehow connected to her. Her mother. The woman she had been told was simply her mother. The woman whose life Ivy had never questioned because there had never been anyone left to give her answers. Ivy reached for the old photograph she had found at the library. She studied Elena's face. There was something familiar about her. The shape of her eyes. The curve of her smile. The resemblance was undeniable. " Why didn't you tell me?" Amara whispered. But the photograph couldn't answer. A sudden sound came from outside. Amara sat upright. Her heart raced. She listened. Nothing. Then— Knock. Knock. Knock. Someone was at the door. She froze. It was almost midnight. "Ethan?" she called. No answer. Another knock. She quietly walked toward the door and looked through the peephole. Nobody. She stepped back. Her phone suddenly vibrated. Unknown number. Open the door. Ivy's blood ran cold. Another message arrived. It's time you knew the truth. She didn't move. Then footsteps sounded outside. Slowly approaching the door. Ivy grabbed her phone and called Lily. "Lily, someone is outside." "What? Where's Ethan?" "Asleep." "Don't open the door." "I'm not." The footsteps stopped. Silence. Then the person outside whispered: "Ivy." She recognized the voice. Her heart dropped. It was Damien. She opened the door only a few inches. Damien stood outside in a dark coat, his expression unusually serious. " What are you doing here?" " You shouldn't be alone." " How did you know someone was outside?" " I received information." " From who?" He didn't answer. Ivy opened the door wider. " You've been following me." " No." " Then how do you always know where I am?" Damien looked at her. " I have security monitoring potential threats." " That's not an answer." " It's the only one you're getting tonight." Ivy's anger rose. " You don't get to decide what I deserve to know." Damien stepped closer, but stopped when he saw the fear in her expression. His voice softened. " You're right." It was the first time Ivy had heard him admit that. She looked surprised. " Then tell me the truth." " About what?" " Elena Cole." Damien went completely still. Ivy noticed. " You know her." His silence was answer enough. " You know my mother." Damien looked away. " Yes." Amara's eyes filled with disbelief. " How?" Before he could answer, a car sped down the street. Both of them turned. The vehicle disappeared around the corner. Damien immediately stepped outside. " Stay here." " Damien—" " Lock the door." He walked toward the road. Ivy watched him disappear into the darkness. For the first time, she realized something. Damien wasn't merely interested in her. He was afraid of something. The following morning, Ivy arrived at work determined to confront him. Instead, she found an envelope on her desk. No name. No explanation. Inside was an old newspaper clipping. The headline read: BLACKWOOD HEIR INVOLVED IN MYSTERIOUS DISAPPEARANCE Ivy read the article. The story described a woman named Elena Cole who had worked closely with Damien's father. According to the article, Elena had disappeared after accusing him of hiding financial information. But there was another detail. She had allegedly been pregnant. Ivy's hands began trembling. She read the final paragraph. "The child was reportedly born shortly before Elena disappeared." Ivy stopped breathing for a moment. The child. Her. Someone had deliberately sent her this information. But why? She looked around the office. Nobody seemed to be watching. Her phone rang. Damien. She answered. " Where are you?" " At work." " Stay there." " Why?" " Because I need to talk to you." " I need answers." " You'll get them." " Now." There was silence. Then Damien said: " Not over the phone." Two hours later, Damien arrived. He walked directly into Ivy's office and closed the door behind him. " You knew." Ivy placed the newspaper on the desk. " You knew about my mother." Damien stared at the article. " Yes." " And you knew she was connected to your father." " Yes." " Why didn't you tell me?" " I was trying to understand the truth first." " You had no right." " I know." Ivy stared at him. "Then why did you investigate me?" Damien's jaw tightened. " Because when I discovered who you were, I realized someone had deliberately hidden you." " From whom?" " From my family." " Why?" " I don't know yet." Ivy laughed bitterly. " You're always saying you don't know." " Because I'm still searching for the truth." " Then stop searching for me." Damien looked at her. " I can't." The room went silent. Ivy's expression hardened. " That's the problem." Damien stepped closer. " I know my behavior has frightened you." " Yes." " I know I've crossed boundaries." " More than once." " I won't pretend otherwise." He paused. " But someone is watching you, Ivy. And I believe they're connected to what happened to your mother." She looked at him suspiciously. " How do I know you're not the person behind it?" " You don't." His honesty surprised her. " But I can prove it." He placed a file on her desk. Inside were photographs, reports and old documents. Ivy slowly opened it. One photograph showed Elena Cole standing beside a much younger man. Damien's father. Another photograph showed Elena holding a baby. Ivy stared at the baby. She knew immediately. It was her. Her hands began shaking. Then she found something else. A letter. The handwriting was unmistakably Elena's. Ivy read the first few lines. Her eyes filled with tears. It was addressed to her. My little girl... She couldn't continue. Damien watched silently. For once, his obsession disappeared beneath genuine concern. " Your mother left that letter twelve years ago." " Why didn't I receive it?" " I don't know." Ivy looked at him. " Who has it?" Damien didn't answer. His phone rang. He looked at the screen. Nathan. He answered. " Yes?" Nathan's voice was tense. " We found the person who sent the photographs." Damien's expression changed. " Who?" A pause. " Daniel Cole." Ivy heard the name. Her stomach dropped. " That's impossible." Damien ended the call. Ivy stood. " Daniel wouldn't do that." " You don't know him." " I met him." " Exactly." " He was kind." Damien's expression hardened. " That's what makes people dangerous." Ivy shook her head. " No." Damien stepped toward her. "Ivy, listen to me." "No. You listen to me." She pointed toward the door. "I don't know who to trust anymore, but I know I won't let you control my life." Damien stared at her. Then he quietly said: "I'm not trying to control your life." Ivy looked into his eyes. "Then what are you trying to do?" His answer came softly. "Keep you alive." That evening, Ivy went home alone. She couldn't stop thinking about Daniel. Could he really be responsible? She reached her apartment and unlocked the door. Something felt wrong. The room was too quiet. She stepped inside. Then she noticed the envelope lying on her table. Her heart sank. She opened it. Inside was another photograph. But this one was different. It showed Damien. Standing beside Elena. On the back were five words: Ask him what he did. Ivy stared at the photograph. Before she could process it, her phone rang. Daniel. She hesitated. Then answered. " Daniel?" His voice was quiet. " Ivy, don't trust Damien." Her heart stopped. " Why?" " Because he knows what happened to your mother." " What happened?" Silence. Then Daniel whispered: " Ask him about the night Elena disappeared." The call ended. Ivy slowly lowered the phone. Outside her apartment, a car drove away. And somewhere across the city, Damien received a message of his own. She knows about Elena. He stared at the screen. For the first time, fear replaced his usual calm. Because there was one secret he had never told Ivy. One secret that could destroy everything. And someone had just decided it was time for her to learn it.
