Jafar had freed himself from the owner of the lands where he worked when he was not even twenty years old. He had slaughtered the whole family of the landowner and then hunted down by the Qā'id men and by the revenge of the murdered relatives. For ten years he had been hiding in the mountains of the northeastern iqlīm, stealing, robbing and threatening. Having a Saracen among the robbers was not a problem for Corrado, and this was because Jafar had sworn a greater loyalty to the god of money. He was a renegade, one who had even tried to seek asylum from ibn al-Thumna, one worse than him, without getting results. For this reason Jafar had joined Corrado and the other ten Greeks who formed his masnada.
