Chapter 3: A Legal Bond

1058 Words
The quiet morning after they signed the prenuptial agreement carried a faint, oppressive sense of formality. Kian drove Lynn to the downtown county courthouse in his sleek, silent luxury car to finalize their official marriage registration. The entire legal process was surprisingly quick and mechanically simple. They signed stacks of official government documents in neat, sterile waiting rooms, handed over their identification materials, and completed every required procedure one by one. Minutes later, a freshly printed marriage license was placed in Lynn’s hands. From that moment on, they became legal husband and wife in the eyes of the law, bound by a cold, paper-thin marital contract. Lynn’s fingers tightened slightly around the thin paper document. There was no trace of joy or warmth in her chest, only cold numbness and distant detachment. She kept reminding herself firmly that this marriage was never born from affection, but a pure transactional deal. She would endure two years of this fake marriage to secure her family’s long-term safety and completely clear their crushing debts. Above all else, she must guard her heart strictly and never develop any real romantic feelings for Kian. Once all the legal formalities were finished, Kian drove her toward the city’s quiet suburban outskirts, where his enormous private mansion stood hidden among lush greenery. The luxurious estate was breathtakingly gorgeous in appearance, yet it exuded an endless sense of coldness and emptiness. Grand hallways, spacious vacant halls, and extravagant furnishings failed to bring the slightest warmth to the lifeless villa. Professional butlers and solemn security guards patrolled the courtyard throughout the day, while maids and chefs only attended to household duties during daytime working hours. As night fell, all staff members left the villa on schedule. In the vast, quiet mansion, only Lynn and Kian remained alone. Kian set an implicit but strict living boundary from the very first day. The entire ground floor was his exclusive private domain, while the whole second floor was fully reserved for Lynn. The central staircase became an unspoken dividing line. Neither of them was supposed to cross into the other’s territory without reason, maintaining a clear, distant cohabitation state. The villa’s personal chefs prepared three delicate, regular meals on time every day. To avoid any possible encounter with Kian, Lynn deliberately adjusted her schedule. She always went downstairs to eat earlier or later than usual, carefully avoiding his mealtime. She tried her best to steer clear of his presence in every possible way, and the two barely exchanged a single word throughout their days. One lazy weekday afternoon, the drinking water on the second floor ran out completely. Unwilling to trouble the off-duty staff for such a trivial matter, Lynn decided to fetch water by herself. She stepped lightly down the empty staircase and walked toward the ground-floor water station. The entire first floor was deathly quiet, with no sign of anyone around. As she passed the corridor leading to Kian’s master bedroom, she noticed the attached bathroom door was slightly ajar, leaving a narrow gap. Thick white steam swirled out from inside, carrying warm moisture that drifted into the cool hallway. Curiosity slipped out unconsciously, and her gaze accidentally drifted through the c***k. She caught a clear glimpse of Kian right after his shower. His broad, well-defined shoulders and tall, toned frame were completely exposed, every muscle line smooth and powerful. Without his usual icy, reserved, domineering aura, his stunning sharp facial features softened slightly. He looked lazy and relaxed, unbelievably handsome in the warm steam. Lynn froze instantly on the spot. Heat rushed rapidly to her cheeks, burning bright red with overwhelming embarrassment. She stammered out a string of hasty apologies without daring to lift her eyes, then spun around and hurried back upstairs as fast as her legs could carry her, her heart pounding wildly in her chest. Even the always calm, collected, and unflappable Kian was thoroughly caught off guard by the sudden intrusion. By the time he snapped back to his senses and reacted, Lynn’s flustered figure had already disappeared at the end of the corridor. After this awkward accidental encounter, the atmosphere between them turned increasingly stiff and uneasy. A subtle, shy awkwardness quietly crept into their originally completely distant and indifferent relationship. A few quiet evenings later, all household staff had finished their work and left the villa for the day. Lynn stayed in the kitchen preparing simple ingredients for dinner. As she carefully sorted and cut fresh vegetables, the sharp kitchen knife accidentally sliced her fingertip. Bright red blood slowly oozed out from the clean cut, stinging faintly. She was about to search for the first-aid kit and dress the wound by herself when Kian walked downstairs to fetch a glass of drinking water. He spotted her injured finger at a glance. Without hesitation, he reached out and gently held her fingertip to examine the depth of the cut. Without a single word of unnecessary comment, he turned to fetch antiseptic cotton and sterile gauze. His movements were steady, gentle, and extremely careful as he cleaned and bandaged her wound. Up close, his deep facial features appeared even more striking and impeccable. The blurry scene from her accidental bathroom peek flooded back into her mind instantly, leaving her terribly flustered and distracted. The second he finished tying the gauze neatly, he pulled his hand away instantly, reverting to his usual cold, indifferent demeanor in the blink of an eye. He spoke in a low, calm voice, reminding her softly to be more careful next time. Then he turned around and left the kitchen without lingering. Late that night, Lynn lay awake alone in her soft bed, tossing and turning restlessly. Her mind was in complete turmoil, unable to settle down. She kept persuading herself rationally not to fall for this cold, distant man. She repeatedly emphasized the transactional nature of their marriage to calm her chaotic thoughts. Yet the vivid memory of his handsome figure, their awkward accidental encounter, their peaceful cohabitation days, and his quiet, thoughtful care were slowly breaking down the thick defensive walls she had built around her heart. A strong sense of worry washed over her. She clearly knew that if they continued living together like this day after day, lingering in this ambiguous and tender atmosphere, she would sooner or later lose control of her own heart.
