Chapter 2: Surrender

1133 Words
Lynn Hale firmly turned down Kian Vanderbilt’s contractual marriage proposal on that rainy day, clinging stubbornly to her last shred of dignity. Even after walking out of the law firm with her head held high, her heart remained heavy with quiet desperation. Yet her insistence on self-reliance did nothing to ease her suffering. If anything, cruel reality continued closing in, leaving her with almost no room to breathe. Her troubles stretched far beyond her overdue student loans. Her father’s severe gambling addiction had plagued their family for years, piling up a staggering amount of high-interest private debt that ordinary people could never afford. Cornered by ruthless lenders who threatened violent retaliation and endless trouble, he fled New York overnight in cowardice. He abandoned his fragile wife and innocent children without a single word of remorse, leaving his family to face the terrifying chaos alone. Unable to track down her father to collect the debt, the angry loan sharks shifted all their frustration and violence toward Lynn’s defenseless family. They chose to terrorize his loved ones relentlessly, simply to vent their unspent rage. Harassment quickly became their inescapable daily nightmare. Every single day, aggressive creditors banged violently on the thin wooden door of their shabby rental apartment, shouting vicious, bone-chilling threats that echoed through the narrow hallway. Lynn’s timid mother lived in constant terror, her nerves stretched thin every single night, unable to sleep or rest peacefully. Her young, sensitive brother grew so frightened by the endless noise and threats that he refused to leave the house at all, trapped in endless anxiety and fear. The threats did not end quietly at their doorstep. Cold-hearted loan sharks even loitered shamelessly outside the quiet café where Lynn worked her only part-time job, openly mocking her impoverished family and humiliating her harshly in front of ordinary customers. They stripped her of every last bit of peace and dignity, forcing her to endure endless embarrassment and heavy mental pressure just to get through a single workday. Desperate to fix the messy, hopeless situation and protect her family, Lynn pushed herself to the extreme and took on three exhausting part-time jobs at once. She saved every single hard-earned dollar carefully, trying to chip away at the towering mountain of debt. No matter how many late nights she sacrificed or how strictly she controlled her spending, cruel compound interest grew endlessly every month. Her modest income could never catch up with the rising amount, trapping her in an inescapable vicious cycle of poverty and debt. Prolonged stress, lingering fear, and extreme exhaustion slowly wore her down both physically and mentally. Still, she gritted her teeth and refused to reach out to Kian for help. She would never accept charity born from pity, no matter how hopeless and desperate her situation became. Unbeknownst to Lynn, Kian had quietly watched every bit of hardship and persecution she endured. He never revealed his presence or interrupted her struggle, choosing instead to observe her stubborn, lonely fight from the shadows. Watching her grow thinner and more worn out by relentless harassment and despair, his initial curiosity toward this unique girl gradually transformed into a faint, unfamiliar sympathy he could barely understand himself. Accustomed to people scrambling and begging for his favor, her unyielding pride and dignity fascinated him deeply. He had no desire to pressure or force her into desperate submission. Without a single warning or hint, he anonymously paid off every single cent of her father’s accumulated debt in full. He issued a strict, authoritative order that barred all local creditors from approaching or disturbing her family ever again, completely erasing all obvious traces of his secret intervention. Within just a few short days, the noisy harassers vanished without a trace. The endless threats and terrifying chaos finally faded away, and long-lost peace quietly settled over their small, fragile home. Confused by this sudden, inexplicable calm, Lynn asked around repeatedly for answers, trying to figure out who had helped her family. It did not take long for her to discover the truth—Kian Vanderbilt was her silent and powerful savior. A heavy sense of obligation crashed over her heart instantly. She was genuinely grateful for his help, yet deeply conflicted and uneasy. The huge debt he had cleared was far too massive for her to ever repay through ordinary years of hard work. On top of this favor, her unpaid student loans still loomed over her future like a dark cloud. A full credit default would ruin her personal record permanently, destroying all chances of a stable career and peaceful life in the future. After countless lonely, tortured sleepless nights, Lynn finally faced the brutal, undeniable truth. She could not break free from her broken family’s troubles and endless debts entirely on her own. Blindly clinging to her stubborn pride would only continue to put her weak mother and vulnerable little brother in mortal danger. She tossed and turned restlessly all night, weighing every painful option and forcing herself to swallow her precious pride. By dawn, after long hesitation, she had made her reluctant but necessary decision. Early the next morning, she dressed neatly and calmly, then headed straight for Kian’s towering, luxurious corporate headquarters in downtown Manhattan. After the polite receptionist notified the upper office of her arrival, she stepped into his spacious, cold, minimalist executive office. Kian slowly lifted his sharp gaze from the stack of complicated documents on his desk. His expression remained calm and completely unreadable, as if he had quietly anticipated her arrival all along. “I agree to sign the two-year contractual marriage,” Lynn said steadily, every word firm and filled with helpless resignation. “But I have strict terms.” “We will occupy separate bedrooms at all times. Neither of us will interfere in the other’s private life, and there will be no romantic intimacy between us in any form.” “When the two-year contract expires, we will divorce peacefully and thoroughly, with no lingering attachments or obligations on either side.” Kian listened quietly and carefully to every condition she laid out, and agreed without the slightest hesitation or unnecessary negotiation. He had waited patiently for her voluntary surrender for a long time, never willing to force her into submission against her own free will. Lynn’s fingers trembled faintly when she picked up the pen and signed her name on the formal contract. She told herself firmly over and over that this marriage was nothing more than a mutually beneficial transaction. It was the only practical way to secure lasting safety and stability for her vulnerable family. She had no idea that once they began living under the same roof, the thick defensive walls around her heart would slowly and inevitably crumble for this quiet, stern, yet silently caring man.
