LORENZO’S POV
I slipped my watch onto my wrist before picking up the car keys from the dresser. France wasn’t far, but every second wasted meant another chance for the coward to find a way out.
The bedroom door clicked shut behind me.
The mansion was unusually quiet at that hour. The first rays of sunlight filtered through the floor-to-ceiling windows, painting golden streaks across the polished marble floor. A few maids hurried through the hallways, dusting furniture and arranging fresh flowers. The moment they noticed me, they immediately lowered their heads.
“Good morning, Boss.”
I didn’t respond. I never did.
My footsteps echoed through the corridor as I made my way through the hallway. Two guards stationed at the entrance straightened instantly.
Before leaving, I stopped outside Leo’s bedroom.
My hand rested on the doorknob for a second before I pushed it open.
The room was dim, the curtains still drawn. Leo was fast asleep, curled up on one side of the bed with his sketchbook pressed tightly against his chest. A blue crayon had slipped from his little fingers onto the blanket.
For a brief moment, the weight on my shoulders eased.
I walked over quietly and picked up the crayon before pulling the blanket higher over him.
“You’ll be okay,” I murmured, though I wasn’t sure whether I was reassuring him… or myself.
He shifted in his sleep but didn’t wake. I stared at him for some time before turning away.
Outside, the morning air was chilly.
The De Luca estate was spread across many acres, surrounded by towering stone walls, armed patrols, and steel gates that had never failed to keep enemies out. Security vehicles rolled slowly along the perimeter while guards changed shifts. No enemy had dared to get in.
A sleek black armored SUV was already waiting at the foot of the mansion steps.
Eyes stood beside it, dressed in an all-black suit with an earpiece fixed in place. Capo Viper, my consigliere, leaned against the passenger door, checking the magazine of his pistol before sliding it back into its holster.
“The convoy is ready, Don,” Eyes said as I approached.
Why was he still here?...
Didn't he go to the north base with my aunt?
“Madam said I should follow you to France instead,” he said immediately, as if he had read my mind.
I closed my eyes. Opening them almost immediately. My aunty always had this thing for making me pissed.
“When would she be going to the Northern base?”
“She said she needed to rest a bit first,” Eyes replied.
I glanced toward the distant private runway beyond the vineyards. My jet was already waiting, its engines humming softly against the morning silence.
“Let’s go.”
Without another word, I climbed into the SUV.
The gates of the De Luca estate slowly swung open.
France awaited me… and so did the man who held the answers to my wife’s death. Unfortunately for him, today would be the day he finally talked.
Looking through the window, my thoughts wandered. Elena.
I was still furious about the other day. After catching Elena outside my office the previous day, I just couldn't get her out of my mind, not because I liked her, never. But because I didn't trust her at all. I was still very pissed at my aunt that a stranger was living in my house. I even barely slept.
Not long after , we arrived and I entered immediately. I settled down and closed my eyes, but someone kept interrupting my peaceful moment.
It was one of the hostesses.
She was being loud while pouring the wine. It irritated me.
“Hey”
She froze. Her expression definitely looked like I would snap her into two. She was definitely new because others knew how much I hated noises like that.
“D.. do..Don”
“You're fired”
“Don”
“Get out”
She didn't argue, but I could see the tears falling from her eyes. She just left.
She was the least of my problems at the moment.
Another person interrupted. This time it was Eyes. He didn't even seem remorseful for interrupting my sleep.
“ Don,he hasn't spoken in three days”
I didn't take my eyes off the cloud outside the jets.
“He will,” I replied, not even sparing him a glance.
“We've tried everything”
“You haven't tried me” this time, I gave him a glance and continued looking at the clouds. Silence settled between us.
“I almost feel sorry for that bastard, “ Eyes said.
“You shouldn't” I said coldly.”If he knows who killed Sonia, today is the last day he would keep that secret”
Capo Viper came forward. “The southern base has recovered after Capo Willy's execution”
Recovered?. Not to me
“Recovered doesn't mean they are loyal”
“No sign of rebellion” he added.
I chuckled. These people sound like they don't understand the stupid people they work with. “There never are…until someone puts a bullet in your back”. “Eyes”
“Yes sir”
“Who is in charge of the Southern base now that you're absent ?”
“Capo Voss”
“Tell him I need a background check on all the soldiers and replace anyone who seems suspicious ”
“There had already been a replacement of about a hundred.”
“I want them wiped out even.. do another background check.”
“I don't think …” Viper kept quiet. He knew better than to continue talking.
“They served under a traitor. What makes you think they can't serve another?.. Baratheon even had to take the fall for him. Mistakes aren't an option"
I guess my words made them silent.
“Yes Don”
Eyes placed a file before me.
“The shipment from Serbia crossed the border safely.”
“Quantity”
“Eight hundred assault rifles”
“Too little”
“Romania couldn't move more”
“Find another supplier. Diego won't take any chances”
Capo viper nodded.
“What about ammunition ?” I asked again.
“Three million Rands”
I closed the folder. We need to double more before winter.
This wasn't the least of my problems. I need to kill that bastard.
My phone vibrated. It was from the France team.
I took the phone “report”
The voice on the other end hesitated.
“Don we've run into a slight complication?”
“What complication?”
“..I think it's best you get here first,” the line went dead.
