Chapter 9: The New Prophets

1165 Words
The world had stopped arguing about whether the Visitors were real. Now it argued about something far more dangerous. Whether humanity still needed to lead itself. Only a year earlier, people had celebrated the astonishing discoveries that transformed medicine, transportation, agriculture, and communication. Diseases once thought incurable had become manageable. Energy flowed endlessly through the Cities of Glass. Hunger declined. Wars between nations became increasingly rare. Every improvement carried the same invisible signature. Visitor technology. At first, governments claimed the breakthroughs belonged to the world's greatest scientists. Eventually, the truth became impossible to hide. The Visitors had become humanity's greatest benefactors. Millions adored them. Millions more trusted them. And from that trust arose a new generation of influential voices. The media called them The New Prophets. Not prophets of religion. Prophets of the future. They were celebrated futurists, philosophers, scientists, authors, inventors, artists, and social leaders who proclaimed that humanity had reached the end of its old way of thinking. "The future," they declared, "belongs to those who embrace change." Their speeches filled stadiums. Their broadcasts reached billions. Their books became international bestsellers. Their message was always the same. "Stop looking backward." "The future has already arrived." "The Visitors are not our rulers." "They are our partners." People applauded. Entire generations embraced the message. --- Daniel watched one of the broadcasts from the safety of the monastery outside Jerusalem. A renowned physicist stood before thousands inside the magnificent Aurora Convention Centre. Behind him floated holographic images of flourishing cities, healthy children, and smiling families. "Our ancestors dreamed of ending disease," the speaker declared. "The Visitors achieved it." Thunderous applause erupted. "They dreamed of ending hunger." More applause. "They dreamed of limitless clean energy." The crowd rose to its feet. "Why should we fear those who have given us everything we ever wanted?" Daniel quietly switched off the screen. Amara sighed. "They're winning." "No," Daniel answered. "They're convincing people they already have." --- Elsewhere, the influence of the New Prophets spread with astonishing speed. Universities redesigned their courses around Visitor science. Businesses abandoned older technologies almost overnight. Children learned history through interactive simulations designed by Visitor educators. The world was changing so quickly that many people no longer recognised the society in which they had grown up. Some welcomed it. Others felt strangely uneasy but could not explain why. --- Inside the crystalline command city beneath Antarctica, Commander Varok addressed the Supreme Chancellor. "Public confidence has reached ninety-six percent." "Excellent." "The New Prophets have exceeded every projection." Another commander stepped forward. "There is one concern." The Chancellor looked up. "Speak." "Our behavioural models indicate increasing curiosity among independent researchers." Daniel's photograph appeared above the holographic table. Then Amara's. Then Lucien's. Finally... Lily Williams. "The four continue interfering with the Assignment." Varok asked calmly, "Permission to remove them?" The Chancellor remained silent. After several moments he answered, "No." The commanders exchanged puzzled looks. "They're becoming symbols." "If they disappear," the Chancellor continued, "others will ask why." "Then what shall we do?" "We discredit them." --- Within days, news channels around the world carried astonishing reports. A respected journalist claimed Daniel had fabricated evidence. Anonymous online accounts accused Amara of spreading dangerous misinformation. Old photographs were digitally altered. Documents disappeared from official archives. Fake interviews circulated across social media. People who had never met Daniel condemned him. Friends stopped answering his calls. Research institutions erased his publications. Within a week... The world believed he had become a conspiracy theorist. Daniel stared silently at the news reports. "They've erased my reputation." Amara placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder. "They're afraid." "No." Daniel shook his head. "They're organised." --- Meanwhile, Lucien walked through Central Research District unnoticed. For years he had obeyed every command without hesitation. Now each assignment weighed heavily upon him. He entered a secure laboratory. Rows of transparent chambers filled the room. Inside each chamber floated crystalline devices no larger than a human heart. A young Visitor scientist greeted him. "Commander Lucien." "What are these?" "The Resonance Seeds." Lucien frowned. "What are they for?" The scientist smiled. "They'll become the foundation of every future City of Glass." Lucien examined one carefully. Its surface pulsed gently. Almost... Like it was alive. --- That night, Lily experienced another dream. She found herself walking across an endless plain beneath unfamiliar constellations. The lonely boy, Kael, waited beside a dry riverbed. "You came back," Lily said. "I hoped you would." Kael looked older now. His face carried sadness beyond his years. "Your people are kind." "They're frightened." "They still choose kindness." Lily looked around the silent landscape. "What happened here?" Kael knelt and scooped up a handful of grey dust. "We believed knowledge alone would save us." He opened his hand. The dust slipped away like smoke. "But wisdom disappeared." Lily awoke suddenly. Her heart raced. She reached for her notebook and wrote one sentence before the memory faded. Power without compassion destroys itself. --- The following afternoon, Daniel's scanner detected an unfamiliar transmission. Unlike previous Visitor communications, this one came from somewhere inside the Cities of Glass themselves. The signal repeated every thirteen minutes. Encoded. Hidden beneath ordinary network traffic. Lucien studied the data beside him. "I've seen this pattern before." "Where?" "Our home world." "What does it mean?" Lucien hesitated. "It's a synchronisation pulse." "For what?" Lucien's face became pale. Daniel watched him carefully. "What aren't you telling us?" Lucien finally answered. "The Cities aren't separate." "We know that." "They're becoming one machine." Silence filled the room. Amara whispered, "One machine..." Lucien nodded. "A planetary intelligence." --- Before anyone could speak again, every monitor in the monastery lit up simultaneously. No one had touched them. A single symbol appeared. The emblem engraved upon Daniel's mysterious metallic coin. Then a voice echoed through the speakers. Calm. Ancient. Emotionless. "Professor Daniel Adeyemi." Everyone froze. "We know where you are." The transmission continued. "You have been given many opportunities to abandon your investigation." The voice paused. "You have refused." Daniel stepped towards the screen. "What do you want?" The answer came immediately. "Tomorrow..." Another pause. "...the Assignment enters its final preparation." The screens went black. Outside, thunder rolled across the hills surrounding Jerusalem. Daniel slowly looked towards the distant skyline. Far beyond the horizon, the crystal towers of the nearest City of Glass began glowing with an eerie blue light. One tower. Then another. Then another. Within minutes, every City of Glass across the world shone like a network of stars connected by invisible threads. Lucien stared in horror. "They've activated the Resonance Seeds." Daniel looked at him. "What happens now?" Lucien answered with quiet dread. "The cities are no longer just listening." "They're beginning to think." And somewhere beneath Antarctica, deep within the heart of the Visitors' hidden civilization, the Supreme Chancellor opened his eyes. The first stage of the Planetary Mind had begun. Humanity still celebrated its greatest age of progress. It did not realise that, with every passing second, the world itself was quietly becoming something entirely new.
