Chapter 9 FENRIR As Serafina left the room, my mother turned her attention to me. " Fenrir, why on earth would you want to get yourself involved with such a... nameless entity? " she asked, her voice dripping with disdain. I felt my anger rising, but I didn't respond. Instead, I pulled out my book to my side and wrote down my thoughts. " She's not nameless to me," I wrote. "And even if she was, that doesn't make her any less worthy of respect and kindness." My mother scoffed. " The girl is a fraud, Fenrir. She's using you for your family's status and wealth. Mark my words, you know you two goofballs always enjoy neglecting my words until the bad things start to happen ". My father, Alpha Manos, intervened, his voice calm but firm. " When will you learn to accept people for who they are, not for their wealth or accomplishments? " he asked my mother. " This is Fenrir's life, not yours. Let him make his own decisions." My mother's face reddened with anger. " My son will not marry such a girl, his life or not, he wouldn't! " she declared, her voice loud enough for the servants to hear. " She's beneath us." I snapped my fingers twice, and the room fell silent. The servants understood the gesture and quickly excused themselves, leaving us alone. My mother continued to rant, but I tuned her out, focusing on my book instead. I wrote down my thoughts, my feelings, and my frustrations. " Why can't she just accept Serafina for who she is?" I wrote. "Why does she always have to judge and criticize?" My father placed a hand on my shoulder, his eyes understanding. "Don't worry, son," he thought to me. "We'll get through this. Your mother will come around eventually." I nodded, feeling a sense of gratitude towards my father. He always knew how to calm me down, how to make me see reason. As for my mother, I knew she would never change. But I was determined to make my own decisions and that's when I chose to remind them of something, a promise. I remembered it was a few days after my coronation as the leader of the pack, I sat in my chambers, surrounded by the familiar comforts of my childhood. My parents, Alpha Manos and Mrs. Daine, sat across from me, their faces filled with a mix of concern and pride and around me were my men, my brothers an sisters in arms. " Fenrir, you're about to go into battle, "my father said, his voice serious. " Are you sure you're ready for this? , I could send someone else to lead the forces instead ". I shook my head, my heart pounded with excitement, I stood up and came close to my father, i looked him in the eyes and told him that " I was born for this, Father. I will come out victorious, I promise. " I promised– this was when my downfall began. My mother's eyes were stale, she was certain that I'd win and I believed her. " You worry too much, darling– doesn't he look ready to you, just be fine fenrir." I smiled, trying to reassure her. " I'll be fine, Mother. I have the best men behind me, and I know what I'm doing. " but I wasn't doing well. All I had said on that day were lies and flaws that never seemed to benefit me or anyone else. I remembered the speech I gave to my men before the battle. " Today, we fight for our pack's freedom! " I shouted, my voice echoing through the halls. " We will not be silenced, we will not be oppressed. We will rise up and take what's rightfully ours! " My men cheered, their faces filled with determination. I knew we would win, I could feel it in my bones. But the battle was fierce and believe me when I say that I was beaten to a standstill, and I found myself at the verge of death. I lay on the ground, my vision blurry, my body broken and my men scattered across the battleground in the pool of their blood and in my inability to lead. And then , a spirit appeared before me, I can never explain if this was a dream or it really happened, it said to me " Let's make a deal, young alpha",its voice low and mysterious. I tried to speak, but my voice was barely a whisper, my windpipe was struggling helplessly to let in air " W-what kind of deal? ", even in death I was still arrogant, just like my mother. The spirit smiled, its eyes glinting with power. " You'll find out soon enough, Fenrir. But for now, just agree and I'll make you a living storm ". I nodded, desperate to live. And with that, everything went black. I came back to the present, my book still clutched in my hand. I wrote down my thoughts, my memories flooding back . " I remember when I could still talk," I wrote. "I remember the battle, the spirit, the deal. But I don't know what the deal was. I don't know what I agreed to but that was the day I stopped speaking– perhaps that was the day I was cursed ". My mother tried to comfort me, her voice suddenly soft and soothing. " Fenrir, don't dwell on the past. It won't help anyone." But I stood up, my anger and frustration boiling over. My father tried to calm me down, his voice firm but gentle. " Fenrir, sit down please. Let's talk about this." But I ignored him, my eyes blazing with determination. I wrote in my book, my words spilling out in a torrent. " For once no one should ever interfere with my life," I wrote. " You've done enough already. I can take care of myself." I tore out the page and handed it to my parents, my message clear. I took my book and turned to leave, but not before catching a glimpse of my mother's sigh and my father's worried expression, As I walked away.
