Chains and Secrets: The cold stone walls of the dungeon pressed in on Selene from all sides. The damp air was thick with the smell of mold and despair, and every drip of water echoed like a distant heartbeat. She shivered, not from the cold alone but from the realization of her predicament. Bound by iron shackles that bit into her wrists, she struggled to piece together what had happened after the blow to her head. Her mind drifted back to Althea’s words, heavy with urgency and fear: “They want you, Selene. The Crown knows…” But what did she mean? Why was the Crown after her? And what power did this cursed mark hold? Hours passed or was it days? Time lost meaning in the darkness. Her only company was the distant footsteps of guards and the occasional rat scurrying across the floor. Yet, even in this bleakness, a flicker of determination burned inside her. She refused to be just another prisoner. Suddenly, the heavy iron door creaked open. A tall figure stepped in a man clad in the black robes of the Crown’s enforcers. His face was hidden beneath a hood, but the faint glow of the torchlight revealed sharp, calculating eyes. “You must be the girl,” he said, voice low and cold. Selene met his gaze, steeling herself. “What do you want from me?” The man knelt, pulling back his hood. His face was marked with scars, but there was something familiar in his eyes. “I am Captain Rafe,” he introduced himself. “And you, Selene Draxen, carry a secret the Crown has hunted for centuries.” Selene’s heart skipped. “A secret? What are you talking about?” Rafe’s expression softened, almost imperceptibly. “The Mark of Shadows. It is not a curse but a key, one that can unlock powers beyond imagining. Powers your enemies fear, and your friends covet.” She looked down at her left eye, where the scarred mark pulsed faintly. Memories flashed, fragments of visions she couldn’t explain, whispers in the night, shadows moving on their own. “Why capture me? Why keep me here?” she demanded. Rafe sighed. “Because you’re in danger. The Crown’s higher powers believe you either hold the key to their salvation or their destruction. We want to ensure you survive.” Selene scoffed. “You want to keep me alive by locking me in a dungeon?” “Not forever,” Rafe said, standing. “But you must trust me, and more importantly, trust yourself.” As the door slammed shut behind him, Selene realized the fight for her life had only just begun. The walls that bound her were not just physical, but a prison of secrets, lies, and shadows stretching far beyond the dungeon’s depths.
