Chapter 1

The sound of glass shattering wildly caused her lungs to tighten in her chest. Her insides rolled with both disgust and fear as she watched him. The man who was supposed to marry her lifted his own brother into the air like he weighed nothing and threw him against the once-beautiful mosaic window. They were in the pack's church, a very old church deep in the woods that had belonged to the Silver Moon Pack for centuries. It was a grand place, old as a rock, and it was now being torn apart by the fight. Not that it was the first time, anyway, as these kinds of fights always happened here. It was like their court and palace. Alpha Aiden was ruthless, trying to prove a point: nobody crossed him. The other werewolf was weak, the fear of death radiating unabashedly from his eyes. The urge to scream for help, to halt this parade, gnawed painfully at his chest. But he knew there was no hope, so he let his body endure the assault. A cruel smile curved on Alpha Aiden's lips as he dug his claws into his brother's artery, slicing it open and leaving him for dead. He simply turned his back and clapped his hands as though he'd just finished an ordinary task, not even a flicker of guilt or regret crossing his face Diana watched as life left the other werewolf's eyes, and her world melted. Her heart thundered against her ribcage, hard and fast, like it was about to explode. She was marrying the monster who had done this to his own brother tomorrow. Because her family owed him. This beautiful monster. Damn, he was handsome. And no matter how hard Diana tried to ignore it, she found herself studying the best parts of his features. Actually, he had a perfect face. One you could imagine waking up to every morning and still be intrigued by. No. He was an ugly monster. She had to see him for who he truly was. "Who else dares to challenge me as Alpha?" he asked, his hands raised above his head, a sly smile on his face. He was daring anyone to step forward from the audience that had watched. Some applauded, while others silently gnawed at him for killing his own brother. Diana knew that no one would challenge him. He was too strong. Damn, she wished she had the strength to challenge him. She wished desperately that the Moon Goddess would bestow upon her the strength to challenge this crazy Alpha, so drunk on power. "You killed your brother! Abomination! Rendering him weak was enough! You killed him! You killed my son!" That was his mother's voice. She was on the floor, shattered, hugging the dead body of her other son. She looked like she was going mad from grief and disbelief. Diana thought to herself, perhaps this would affect the Alpha. Perhaps it would bring him to understand the consequences of his actions. She was shocked when he started laughing instead, shaking his head like he had just witnessed the most pathetic scene of the century. "Oh, Mother, please. He asked for it. He was poisoning the pack, telling everyone that he was a better Alpha, that I was a monster. I have just shown him what he claimed. And quit the act. We both know this is how you used to rule." His mother had been the Alpha. And Aiden had fought her to become Alpha and had won, but had not killed her because she was his mother. A decision he might have regretted because she was a huge thorn in his flesh, always trying to prove something wrong with his leadership. She was lucky that she birthed him, if not, she'd have been forgotten. "You... You... Monster. I curse the day I birthed you and everyday that you've lived!" His mother cried. Her words shook the ground beneath their feet, fear seeping into the bones of everyone who witnessed the scene. Not him, he found her words hilarious, a worthy comedy. "Do you really think you have the right to a curse, Mother?" His tone was so full of mockery that it stained the atmosphere. "The Moon Goddess is probably nauseated by your voice." Ouch. Diana shuddered at his words. Unlike every other member of the pack, Diana had no idea how demented Aiden was. Yes, she witnessed his current madness and was irritated by it mostly because she'd been sold to him like a worthless object. Goodness, she had only gone to school in another region with more humans and had just graduated as a medical student, coming home the day before to celebrate with her family, when her mother had shown her a contract that bound her to the Alpha. Her entire world had been ripped out from under her feet. Her father had signed the damned contract himself, only telling her mother about it afterward. Then he'd disappeared, becoming a violent rogue. Diana's family owed Aiden a debt that could only be collected by her marriage to him. Except she did not want to marry him. She could not. She would not. She would rather die than marry such a monster, not after what she saw with her own eyes. "Alpha Aiden, that is no way to speak to your mother..." Elder Luca spoke out loud, his voice jittery. It was way too obvious that he feared Aiden. "Aww, Mommy's little pet decided to join the chat. Trying to school me, Stepdaddy? Perhaps you should come on out and fight for the position. You could be Alpha." Diana expected some sort of courage from the Elder, only to watch him take a lot more than a few steps back into the shadows, completely disappearing without shame. "That's what I thought. Great! Since there's no one worthy..." "Me!" There was a voice, but the person who owned it was invisible. Perhaps it came from a distance, or perhaps the owner just didn't exist—at least, that was what Aiden thought before a petite, redheaded woman strolled forward with her head held high. She wasn't even muscular. She looked soft and scared, but too angry to care. "I will fight you." Her mouth moved, and he thought of everything that mouth could do. Diana was on the verge of peeing her pants. How the hell was she standing in front of everyone? Had she been so possessed by rage and resolve that she'd let it control her blindly? She wanted to run back into the crowd, turn back the hands of time, disappear into the shadows. "Bless my heart, young lady. What did you say?"
