3320 Words

39 Adrial The warehouse had gone silent. Adrial pressed his head against the wall behind him, needing the pain in his body to keep him present despite his despair. “Are you going to lead the fight?” Ena asked. Hearing her speak soothed a bit of Adrial’s fear but heightened his hatred. “We’re going to burn the barracks,” Cade said. “The charges have already been set. Once the paun are wounded, we’ll s*******r them all.” “What about me?” Ena said. “I can’t go back to my shop. The scribe could send soldiers there.” “Stay here. My men will protect you.” “I don’t know them. I don’t want them near me.” “They’re good men.” “I don’t trust them. I only trust you, Cade. Please.” Silence followed. Adrial pressed his head against the wall so hard he thought he might split his own skull.
