Episode 11 : First Love?

1574 Words
ELENA'S POV Friday nights at Rose's Café were always exceptionally quiet. The heavy wooden door had just clicked shut behind the very last customer of the evening, leaving behind the comforting, familiar scent of roasted espresso beans, vanilla syrup, and old book pages. The ambient hum of the city outside seemed to fade into a peaceful murmur. In the back kitchen, the rhythmic clinking of ceramic plates echoed as Mrs. Rose stood by the sink, humming a soft, old-fashioned melody while she washed the remaining dinner dishes. Meanwhile, Lily and I had claimed our favorite spot—the cozy booth right next to the large bay window. Spread out on the table between us were two generous slices of decadent chocolate fudge cake and two steaming mugs of freshly brewed black coffee, the swirling steam rising up to catch the soft yellow glow of the overhead pendant lights. I was just about to take a sip of my coffee when Lily suddenly shifted. She rested her chin flat against her open palm, propping her elbow up on the table, and simply stared at me. Her unblinking gaze was intense, analytical, and entirely unprompted. I lowered my mug back to its saucer, raising an eyebrow. "What?" She narrowed her eyes, her gaze sharpening as if she were trying to decode a top-secret encryption. "I've been observing you." I let out a nervous chuckle, adjusting my cardigan. "...Should I be worried?" "Definitely," she deadpanned, not breaking eye contact for a single second. I shook my head and laughed, cutting off a small piece of the chocolate cake with my fork. "Alright, I'll bite. What exactly did I do now?" "You smiled," she announced dramatically. "Lily, I smile all the time," I countered, placing the forkful of cake into my mouth. "I work in customer service and corporate administration. Smiling is practically part of my daily muscle memory." "No." She pointed a single, accusatory finger right at my face, her expression dead-serious. "You smiled differently. There was a specific, ridiculous little crinkle near your eyes, and your cheeks actually went a tiny bit pink." My brows knitted together in genuine confusion. "When?" "Just now, about five minutes ago," she said, leaning forward over the table. "When you were talking about your new office setup and how your week went." "I was not doing any of that," I protested, feeling a sudden, inexplicable prickle of warmth rising up the back of my neck. "You were." "I wasn't, Lily." "Oh, you totally, one hundred percent were," she sang out, a triumphant grin finally breaking across her face. I leaned back against the plush leather cushions of the booth, laughing softly at her sheer stubbornness. "Lily... I assure you, it’s just a job. A very demanding, very professional corporate job." Instead of backing down, she leaned even closer, her chest practically pressing against the edge of the wooden table. Her eyes sparkled with a dangerous amount of pure, unfiltered mischief. "Tell me honestly, Elena. Just between us two best friends." I braced myself. "What?" "Is your new billionaire boss as ridiculously handsome as the tabloids claim he is?" The exact moment the words left her mouth, I took another hasty gulp of my hot coffee. The liquid went down entirely the wrong pipe. I instantly broke into a violent fit of coughing, slamming my mug down so hard a bit of coffee sloshed over the rim. "Lily!" I gasped out, my face flushing scarlet as I grabbed a napkin to dab at my lips. "What?" she asked, her voice incredulously innocent. "It's a completely normal question for a girl to ask her best friend!" "It absolutely is not a normal question when it involves the CEO of a multi-billion dollar conglomerate!" I hissed, looking around the empty café as if the corporate board members might suddenly burst through the doors. "So that's a definitive yes," Lily declared, crossing her arms over her chest with a massive, victorious grin. "I didn't say that! I didn't say anything of the sort!" "Elena, sweetie, you didn't have to say a single word. Your lungs literally gave out at the mere mention of his looks." She leaned back, looking incredibly proud of her amateur detective skills. "I've known you for years. We went through school together, we've shared countless late nights, and I can read your face like an open book with giant, bold print." I let out a long, defeated sigh, realizing there was absolutely no escaping Lily's interrogation tactics once she smelled blood in the water. I looked down at my hands, my fingers tracing the smooth ceramic handle of my mug. "He's... good-looking," I admitted quietly, the words feeling incredibly strange and dangerously candid as they left my lips. "Objectively speaking, he is a very attractive man." Lily slammed her open palm flat against the wooden table, making the plates rattle. "I KNEW IT!" The sudden, loud bang echoed through the quiet space. From the kitchen doorway, the swinging doors pushed open and Mrs. Rose peeked her head out, her hands tucked into her flour-dusted apron, a soapy sponge held mid-air. "Why are you girls yelling out here?" Mrs. Rose asked, though the bright, affectionate crinkles around her eyes showed she wasn't actually upset. "I can hear you over the sound of the running water." "Our Elena just admitted her billionaire boss is handsome!" Lily called out gleefully, waving Mrs. Rose over like a conspirator. Mrs. Rose let out a soft, melodic laugh, wiping her wet hands on her apron as she walked out from behind the counter. "Oh? Is that so?" I immediately covered my burning face with both of my hands, wishing the floorboards of the café would open up and swallow me whole. "Please, Mrs. Rose, don't encourage her. She’s already building a whole romance novel in her head." Lily’s grin only widened as she tapped her fork against the edge of her plate to get my attention. "So... let's dig a little deeper into the psychology of Elena. Is this your very first real crush?" The words struck a strange, unexpected chord deep within my chest. The embarrassment that had been buzzing through my veins suddenly evaporated, replaced by a sudden, heavy stillness. I lowered my hands from my face, my movements slowing down. "No," I said quietly, shaking my head without a moment's hesitation. "It's not." Lily blinked, her teasing grin faltering slightly at my sudden shift in tone. "Then... have you ever been in love before?" The remaining laughter completely disappeared from my face. The lighthearted ambiance of the Friday night gossip session evaporated, leaving behind a profound, heavy quiet. I couldn't look at Lily anymore. Instead, my eyes dropped down to the dark, murky surface of the coffee swirling inside my hands, the reflection of the light dancing on the liquid. A memory, fragile and deeply buried, threatened to push its way to the surface. "...Maybe," I whispered. Lily sat up perfectly straight, her jaw dropping open in sheer shock. She blinked once, twice, as if trying to verify if the person sitting across from her was actually me. "...Wait. Hold on. What?" I kept my eyes glued to my mug. "You?" Lily asked, her voice dropping an octave, filled with genuine, unadulterated disbelief. "You're telling me you've been in love? Elena, I thought you never liked anyone! In all the years I've known you, you've rejected every single guy who ever tried to ask you out. You always said you were too busy, too focused on survival, too detached!" "I never said I never liked anyone," I murmured softly, my thumb tracing the rim of the cup. "I just never talked about it. To anyone." From the edge of the counter, Mrs. Rose quietly smiled, a knowing, incredibly gentle look in her wise eyes. She didn't interrupt us, nor did she walk away. She simply leaned against the counter, holding her breath, listening intently. Lily leaned across the table again, but this time, the teasing mischief was entirely gone from her eyes. It was replaced by a deep, protective curiosity. "Elena... tell me everything. Who was he?" A faint, incredibly bittersweet smile touched the corners of my lips. It was a memory that felt more like a dream, a fragment of a past life that I kept locked away in the deepest corner of my heart. "I never even saw his face," I said. Both Lily and Mrs. Rose completely froze. The entire café fell into an absolute, breathless vacuum of silence. The clinking of the distant city traffic seemed to vanish entirely. "...What?" Lily whispered, her brow furrowing in deep confusion. "What do you mean you never saw his face?" "I don't know his name," I continued, my voice steady but incredibly soft, as if speaking the words out loud might break the fragile spell of the memory. "I don't know where he lives. I don't even know what he looks like under the light of day." I paused, taking a slow, deep breath, finally lifting my head to look directly into my best friend's stunned eyes. "But... I think I fell completely in love with him." A profound, heavy silence filled the empty café, thick with a story that had been waiting years to be told. Lily slowly pulled her hands back, her expression completely rapt, her voice dropping to a captivated whisper. "Now I'm listening." End of Episode 11
