Episode 6 – New Beginnings

1930 Words
Elena's POV Mr. Knight closed the file. The silence in the room became heavy, almost suffocating. My heart pounded against my ribs like a trapped bird. Had I ruined it? Had I been too honest about my personal life? He looked directly at me, his icy blue eyes boring into my soul. "Your answers weren't perfect, Ms. Carter." My heart sank completely, dropping straight into my stomach. I felt a cold wave of disappointment wash over me. "You missed critical administrative details, specifically regarding global logistics." I lowered my eyes, my fingers tightening against my lap. "I understand, sir. Thank you for your time." "But..." I looked up again, caught off guard by the continuation. "You remained entirely calm under pressure," Mr. Knight continued, his voice steady and resolute. "You admitted your operational mistakes instantly instead of making pathetic excuses to save face. Those are qualities that are exceptionally difficult to teach. I can teach you logistics. I cannot teach you integrity." He paused, a heavy, theatrical beat. "Congratulations, Ms. Carter. You have the job." For a full three seconds, I literally couldn't breathe. The words bounced around my head, refusing to register. "I..." I stammered, my voice cracking slightly. "Thank you, sir. Truly. I won't disappoint you." "I hope not," he replied, his voice returning to its usual cool, detached baseline. "Because you'll need to work harder than you ever have in your life to keep it." He leaned forward, his presence reasserting its terrifying weight. "I expect absolute accuracy. Flawless professionalism. And constant, rapid improvement. I do not tolerate the same mistake twice. Understood?" "Yes, sir. Absolutely." I stood up, gathering my personal folder, my knees feeling like jelly. I turned to leave, my hand almost touching the cold metal handle of the heavy door, before the most important face flashed in my mind. My mother. I stopped. I bit my lip, turning back around to face the billionaire who now held my leash. "Sir..." He looked up from a new file, his dark eyebrows raised. "Go ahead." "I read in the company prospectus that Knight Global Holdings provides comprehensive employee health benefits." I took a deep breath, stepping back toward the desk. "My mother requires ongoing, intensive cardiac treatment. If I join the firm... would she be eligible under the executive family health coverage immediately?" For the absolute first time during the entire grueling interview... his rigid, unreadable expression softened, almost completely imperceptibly. The icy glare died down, replaced by a strange, quiet look. "You'll complete your formal employment paperwork tomorrow morning," he stated, his voice surprisingly devoid of its previous coldness. "Inform my personal assistant, Parker Hayes, that you wish to enroll your mother in the corporate family health coverage immediately. It will be arranged by noon." My eyes widened in sheer, overwhelming relief. A massive weight was lifted from my chest. "Thank you... truly, Mr. Knight." He simply gave a short, final nod, dismissing me. "Report here tomorrow morning at precisely nine o'clock. Don't be late." "I won't, sir." As I finally walked out of his office and the heavy doors clicked shut behind me, a profound sense of relief washed over my body, leaving me weak. I leaned against the corridor wall, letting out a breath I felt like I'd been holding for months. I had done it. Mom was safe. Ethan was going to college. I had absolutely no idea that getting the job would be the easiest part of my journey. Working directly for a man like Asher Knight... was going to change my life in ways I couldn't even begin to imagine. Elena's POV The moment I stepped out of Mr. Knight's office, I finally remembered how to breathe. The heavy, mahogany door clicked shut behind me, sealing away the suffocating tension that seemed to radiate from the very walls of his room. I had done it. I actually got the job. My hands were still trembling slightly as I clutched my cheap purse against my chest. My heart hammered against my ribs, a chaotic mix of adrenaline, sheer disbelief, and a surging wave of relief. Still trying to process everything, I stood frozen in the plushly carpeted hallway, staring blankly at the polished marble floor. I was so lost in my own head that I was startled when someone called my name. "Ms. Carter?" I turned around, my shoulders automatically squaring as if I were about to face another interrogation. Instead, a familiar smiling face walked toward me. Unlike Mr. Knight's cold and intimidating presence, which felt like a storm brewing over a frozen landscape, this man looked approachable from the very first glance. He wore a sharp navy-blue suit, but the sleeves were casually rolled up to his forearms, exposing a silver watch and a hint of tanned skin. There was no tie constricting his collar, and he wore a warm smile that seemed capable of making everyone around him feel instantly comfortable. Golden-brown hair, styled in a messy yet professional way. Warm hazel eyes that crinkled at the corners. A relaxed, effortless confidence. "I'm Parker Hayes." He extended his hand, his grip firm and reassuring. "Mr. Knight's personal assistant." "Oh!" I quickly shook his hand, trying to smooth down the wrinkles in my faded blazer. "It's nice to meet you, Mr. Hayes." "The pleasure is mine," he smiled, waving off the formality. "And please, call me Parker. Everyone does. More importantly... congratulations." He leaned in slightly, his voice dropping to a theatrical whisper. "You survived." I blinked, momentarily thrown off by his easygoing demeanor. "...Survived?" "The interview." He whispered dramatically, glancing back at the heavy wooden door of the CEO's office. "That's harder than most people think. We've had candidates walk out of there in tears before the ten-minute mark." I couldn't help laughing, the tight knot of anxiety in my stomach finally beginning to unravel. "I won't lie, I was terrified. I thought he was going to fire me before he even hired me." "As you should be." He looked around the empty hallway before leaning closer, a conspiratorial glint in his hazel eyes. "Our boss isn't exactly famous for sunshine and rainbows. He’s more of a 'thunderstorms and spreadsheets' kind of guy." I laughed again, a genuine, bubbling sound that echoed softly in the quiet corridor. "I noticed." "You'll get used to him," Parker said, giving me a reassuring pat on the shoulder. "He’s an acquired taste. Like black coffee or dark chocolate. Very, very bitter dark chocolate." "I hope so," I murmured, genuinely hoping my resilience wouldn't fail me. Parker gestured toward the elevators at the end of the hall. "Come on. I'll show you around before the workload catches up to us." --- For the next half hour, Parker introduced me to what would become my new workplace, guiding me through the labyrinth of glass and steel that made up the upper echelons of Knight Global Holdings. "This floor belongs to the executive management," he explained, pointing toward a long corridor lined with frosted glass doors. "Finance is on the eighteenth floor. Marketing on seventeen. Legal on sixteen. If you ever need to hunt down a contract, God help you, because the legal team treats documents like dragon hoards." I took mental notes, trying to memorize the layout. "The boardroom is here," he continued, gesturing to a massive room dominated by a dark oak table that could easily seat fifty people. "The CEO's private conference room is over there. And..." He stopped in front of a beautiful glass office situated directly beside Asher Knight's massive cabin. A frosted band ran across the center of the glass, offering just enough privacy while maintaining the open, modern aesthetic of the building. "This..." He smiled proudly, opening the door with a theatrical flourish. "Is your battlefield." "My office?" I stepped inside, my breath catching in my throat. "Exactly." Inside stood a sleek, L-shaped desk made of dark wood and chrome. Two large, high-definition monitors sat in the center, flanked by a brand-new company laptop and a neat stack of leather-bound notebooks. Against the wall were pristine filing cabinets, and a massive digital planner hung on the opposite wall, already glowing with a color-coded calendar that was densely packed with appointments. My eyes widened as I touched the smooth surface of the desk. "It's beautiful." "Wait until you see the workload," he grinned, leaning against the doorframe. "The desk won't stay this clean for long. Enjoy the empty surface while it lasts, Elena." I laughed nervously, a sudden wave of imposter syndrome washing over me. "I believe you." Parker stepped forward and handed me a small, heavy folder embossed with the silver logo of the company. "This contains everything you'll need to survive your first week." I opened it, flipping through the neatly organized tabs. * Orientation schedule. * Employee handbook. * Security access badges. * Emergency contacts. * Executive protocols. Then Parker continued, his tone shifting into something a bit more serious, though the warmth never left his eyes. "Your responsibilities include managing Mr. Knight's calendar, scheduling meetings, arranging international and domestic travel, preparing presentations, coordinating with the department heads, screening calls from people who think they're important enough to talk to him, organizing confidential documents, and occasionally reminding him to eat." I looked up from the folder, pausing at the last item. "...Does he forget?" "He forgets everything except work," Parker said with a dry chuckle. "Food is just an inconvenience to his schedule." "And sleep?" Parker burst out laughing, the sound ringing through the small office. "What's that? I don't think that word exists in Asher Knight's vocabulary. He usually reaches the office before everyone else—around 5:00 AM—and leaves long after everyone has gone home. He answers emails faster than artificial intelligence. Seriously, I think he has a direct neural link to the servers." I smiled, looking back out the glass window toward the closed door of the CEO's office. "He sounds... dedicated." "Dedicated?" Parker chuckled, shaking his head. "That's one word for it. Workaholic is another. Psycho is a third, but we only whisper that one when the doors are locked." I couldn't stop smiling. Parker had an incredible, innate ability to make difficult things feel simple. He noticed my nervousness almost instantly, stepping closer and lowering his voice. "Relax," he said softly. "I know this feels overwhelming. You're looking at the mountain and wondering how you're going to climb it." "It does," I admitted, my voice barely a whisper. "I just don't want to let anyone down. I need this job, Parker. More than you know." "I get it," he said, folding his arms. "But you're not expected to know everything on day one. Asher looks like he expects perfection, and he does, but he also respects competence and effort. You'll make mistakes." "I definitely will." "So ask questions," Parker insisted, pointing a finger at me playfully. "I'd rather explain something ten times than watch you struggle alone. We're a team now, Elena. If you crash, I crash, and frankly, I like my job too much to go down in flames." That single sentence eased most of the lingering anxiety in my chest. For the first time all day, the tight band around my lungs completely relaxed. "Thank you, Parker." He smiled warmly, stepping back into the hallway. "Welcome to Knight Global Holdings, Elena." For the first time since I had received the interview call... the massive, towering skyscraper didn't feel like an intimidating fortress built to keep me out. It felt like the beginning of something entirely new.
