Parker's POV
The boss was impossible.
He acted like an unfeeling machine ninety-nine percent of the time. He calculated risks, managed assets, and viewed people as numbers on a balance sheet.
Yet every now and then...
A tiny, microscopic crack appeared in that icy, impenetrable exterior.
He could've simply walked away. He could have gotten into his warm car, driven to his penthouse, and forgotten all about the wet, stranded assistant.
Instead...
He wanted to know if Elena reached home safely.
Without letting her know. Without taking credit for it.
A small, amused smile crossed my face as I unlocked my phone.
Interesting, boss...
Very, very interesting.
I pulled up the corporate transport app and booked the nearest premium cab, bypassing the standard waitlist by using the Knight Global corporate account. I set the pickup location directly to the entrance canopy and entered her home address from her employee file.
Outside, I watched through the glass as the sleek silver sedan pulled up to the curb right where Elena was standing, her shoulders shivering slightly under the cold wind.
Before Elena could confirm her own ride on her dying phone, the driver lowered his window.
"Ma'am?"
She looked up, startled, water dripping from the edge of her hood.
"I've been assigned to pick up an employee from Knight Global Holdings," the driver called out over the roar of the rain. "Elena Carter?"
Elena looked utterly confused. She looked at her phone, which was still searching for a signal, and then back to the driver.
"That's me. But... I didn't manage to book a ride yet."
The driver smiled warmly, gesturing to the dry, heated backseat.
"It was booked through the corporate portal, ma'am. Please, get in out of the cold."
She hesitated for a second, looking back toward the lobby, but the freezing wind made her decision for her. She climbed inside, the door closing with a solid, quiet thud that shut out the howling storm.
"Already prepaid, ma'am," the driver added as he pulled away from the curb.
She looked surprised, her eyes wide as she sank into the warm leather.
"Prepaid?"
"Yes. Corporate account. Have a safe journey."
As the cab's red taillights disappeared into the heavy, shimmering traffic...
I quietly opened the live location tracking link on my phone.
I leaned back against the lobby wall, watching the little blue dot slowly navigate through the grid of flooded streets.
Forty-five minutes later...
The dot finally stopped moving, resting safely in a quiet, residential neighborhood on the east side of the city.
I smiled, tapping my screen.
Destination Reached.
I opened my direct message thread with Asher. I knew he was likely sitting in his study, surrounded by financial reports, pretending he wasn't waiting.
I sent only two words.
She arrived.
I stared at the screen, counting the seconds.
A few seconds later, the status changed to Read. Then came the reply.
Good.
Nothing more.
No questions. No further instructions.
It was exactly what I expected. But as I locked my phone and walked out to my own car, I couldn't help but chuckle.
The ice was definitely starting to melt.
Elena's POV
The moment I pushed open the heavy wooden door of the café...
"I'M HOME!" I called out, my voice raspy but warm.
The bell above the door chimed merrily, and the rich, heavenly scent of roasted coffee beans, melted chocolate, and sweet cinnamon enveloped me like a giant, comforting hug.
"There she is!"
Lily practically ran across the empty dining room, throwing her dish towel over her shoulder.
"Our corporate queen has returned!"
I laughed, dropping my heavy bag onto the nearest booth and collapsing onto the plush cushions.
"I've only worked one day, Lily. Let's not crown me just yet."
"Exactly!" she cheered, sliding into the seat opposite me. "Your first official day in the big leagues. I need details. I need gossip. And most importantly..."
She grabbed both of my shoulders, her eyes sparkling with dramatic intensity.
"Did the billionaire smile?"
I thought back to the stoic, unreadable face of Asher Knight in the elevator.
"...No."
"Did he laugh?"
"Not even a chuckle."
She squinted, leaning closer.
"Blink twice if he threatened your life or made you sign a non-disclosure agreement about his secret villain lair."
I burst into laughter, the exhaustion of the day suddenly lifting from my chest.
"He didn't! Honestly, he barely spoke to me. He's just... very quiet. Very focused."
Mrs. Rose walked over from the kitchen, a gentle, maternal smile gracing her face. She was carrying a wooden tray with three steaming ceramic mugs filled to the brim with dark hot chocolate, topped with toasted marshmallows.
"So..."
She set the mugs down, the warmth radiating from them immediately drawing us closer.
"How was your first day, sweetheart?"
"It was exhausting, Mrs. Rose."
I wrapped my cold hands around the warm mug, letting the heat seep into my numb fingers.
"But..."
I smiled, a deep, genuine feeling of accomplishment settling in my chest.
"I learned so much. The office is beautiful—it's like another world up there. The people are kind. Parker helped me with everything, and he didn't make me feel stupid even once when I forgot how to route the international calls."
"And Mr. Knight?" Mrs. Rose asked gently, taking a slow sip of her drink.
I thought for a moment, the image of him standing by the elevator, his sleeves rolled up, his tired but powerful presence lingering in my mind.
"He's..."
I searched for the right word.
"Very strict. He doesn't waste words, and he expects perfection. But... he isn't cruel."
Lily gasped dramatically, pressing a hand to her chest.
"I knew it! He definitely looks like the type who schedules happiness for exactly fifteen minutes every Sunday afternoon, right between reading the Wall Street Journal and staring blankly into a mirror."
Mrs. Rose laughed so hard she almost spilled her drink, her shoulders shaking.
"Oh, Lily, leave the poor man alone. Running a global empire can't be easy."
"I don't think he's that bad," I murmured, taking a sip of the sweet, rich chocolate.
"I do."
Lily folded her arms, a playful pout on her face.
"I bet if someone sneezes in his presence... he issues a formal warning letter for noise pollution."
The three of us laughed together, our voices echoing in the cozy, empty café. The sound was warm and familiar, a stark contrast to the cold, quiet halls of Knight Global Holdings.
Then I remembered the paperwork I had filled out during my lunch break.
"Oh!"
"My health insurance paperwork starts tomorrow."
Mrs. Rose's eyes immediately softened, filling with a profound, quiet relief. The light teasing vanished, replaced by a raw, emotional weight. She set her mug down, her hands trembling slightly.
"Really, Elena? The full coverage?"
I nodded, my throat suddenly tight.
"Everything. It covers specialist visits, prescriptions, and preventative care. The HR director confirmed it. Everything is finally moving forward."
She reached across the wooden table, her warm, wrinkled hand squeezing mine with immense gratitude.
"I've prayed for this day," she whispered, her eyes shining with unshed tears. "You worked so hard for this, sweetheart. We are so proud of you."
Lily's eyes were shiny too, though she quickly tried to cover it up with her usual high energy. She raised her mug high into the air.
"To Elena Carter!"
"The bravest, most hardworking corporate queen I know!"
Mrs. Rose smiled, raising her mug to touch Lily's.
"To new beginnings."
I lifted my mug too, the warmth of the ceramic matching the warmth blooming in my chest.
"To family."
Outside...
The rain continued to lash violently against the glass windows, the wind howling through the empty streets of the city.
Inside...
The tiny, humble café was filled with the smell of cocoa, the glow of soft yellow lights, and an abundance of laughter, warmth, and hope.
Far across the city...
In a towering penthouse overlooking the rain-soaked skyline, a billionaire stood by the window.
He glanced once at his phone screen, reading the single word confirming his newest employee had reached home safely.
A quiet breath escaped his lips, barely a sigh.
Then he turned off the screen, placed the phone face down on the mahogany table, and returned to his work.
Neither of them realized...
In the quiet spaces of a stormy night, their lives had already begun changing in ways neither could predict, and the distance between their two worlds was already beginning to shrink.
