Chapter 8 Gain Their Trust

1933 Words
THIRD PERSON'S POV If her wolf was not asleep, it would have snarled at the boy. Her wolf was ruthless. It did not care about a person's age or station. It would leap at anyone who would dare threaten her. It was the number one reason why Basil went to make her wolf fall asleep because he knew no force would stop her once her wolf takes over. Watching the little guy storm out angrily, Elma, who had been inexplicably scolded, thought it might be because the twin had already scared off two wives, causing a huge psychological shadow on Sean, afraid that she would also run away. Elma suddenly felt that if she was to stay in this family for a while, there would be a lot of trouble to deal with. One is the twins, the little brother named Sean, and the constant embarrassment she would have to endure. She had a strong feeling the brothers are not going to let her out of their eyes that easily. They would have to be in her shadow, following her wherever she'd go. Just thinking about it makes her head hurt. One thing she had to do for sure is to earn their trust so that they wouldn't doubt her all the time. She remembered what Woodrow had told her. That they are going to consummate their marriage in two years' time. Just the thought of it makes her stomach churn. The meal she had eaten threatened to come out. They are not even married and they wanted her to bear kids! Do they only see women as breeding cows? It was scandalous and definitely unacceptable. Perhaps that's what wolves are. These men are completely driven by their wolf qualities. It was annoying. After the little boy left, she was the only one left in the room. Elma took the medicine. If she wanted to get out of here, she needs to be strong enough. Drinking her medicine on time and eating her meals is the first step. Minutes later when she used up most of her time contemplating how to live in this new setting, she felt her stomach hurting. From the feeling of it, it didn't feel like it was going to pass soon enough. Getting out of bed, she called for the only person she could ask for help. "Sean," she called. She got out of the room when she heard no response. She couldn't see Sean in the kitchen but she heard someone chopping wood outside. "Sean!" she called once again. Sean was too busy chopping wood as he had a lot on his plate. His brothers added an additional person to take care of which made his life even worse. His brothers assured him though that once Elma gets better, he will have his rest and Elma will do the chores. Surely, she wouldn't sit still and let a kid do the tasks. "Sean," he heard the woman calling and he stopped his work. "What is it?" He looked at Elma with furrowed brows. Elma had the impression that Sean is not even remotely concerned. For Sean, this was all part of her tricks so she could run away. "Where... where's the latrine?" Her stomach was getting more and more painful, she was about to burst. "It's behind the house." Sean walked towards the back of the house after he finished speaking, and Elma quickly followed. She didn't care about the crudeness of the outhouse, at this moment Elma couldn't be picky. She rushed in, pulled down her pants, and squatted down to solve the problem. Damn it. The shameless old ruffian had actually lied to her saying there was no latrine. Even though her stomach hurt terribly, it didn't stop her from cursing him in her mind. Sean stood guard outside, staring unblinkingly at the outhouse, fearing that Elma would try to trick him and take the opportunity to run away when he wasn't paying attention. After a few minutes, she was finally rid of the pain. Even though Elma was currently weak all over, her mind was clearer than ever. "Help me boil some water, Sean, I want to take a bath." Elma took the opportunity to make a request. Sean stared at her at first. She could see how untrusting the kid is but she is not going to give the kid any more reason to be skeptical of her and what she'd do next. After all, she had decided to gain their trust. "Wait here." Sean turned around and walked out, his little face sulking. Elma realized that Sean is a child who doesn't have a childhood. He's mostly doing chores and taking care of his sick brother. At a very young age, he has become quite reliable. First, he moved a bathing tub for Elma into the room, then he carried hot water from the kitchen half a bucket at a time. Watching his face flush from the effort, Elma's heart softened. This awkward little guy is saddled with a Brother who is often not at home and always out hunting, and Orville, who is chronically bedridden. At such a young age, he has taken on the responsibility of caring for his family, with not enough to eat or wear, and having to worry about their livelihood-- it was heartbreaking to see. As an only child, Elma was very envious of people with brothers and sisters. How warm and happy it is to have a bustling family. Unfortunately, her mother died too early. She was thankful for her for giving her life and she was thankful for her father too. Thinking about her parents made his eyes brim with tears. But she stopped herself from crying. "Okay, the water's not hot, call me when you're done bathing, so I can get rid of the water." Sean, having finished his chores, wiped the sweat off his face while looking at Elma seriously. After that, he turned around and went out, also closing the door. "Thank you, Sean," Elma shouted towards the door, and of course, Sean outside heard it. He stopped chopping the wood in the meantime and decided to get on with it later. He decided to go to see his brother, Orville. Orville was weakly lying on the bed and Sean approached him with such silence. When he was finally next to the bed, Orville looked at him. "She doesn't look like she's going to run," he said. The young man on the bed snorted coldly, "Don't let her fool you. You heard it last night too, she is not willing to mate with the Rock and Woodrow. She even advised them to choose another mate who can have a child immediately. Trust me, she is just stalling for time, waiting to recover and run. She's as bad as the previous two women. If I were you, I would not put my hopes too high for her." "Oh." Sean's face darkened, he didn't understand what the word mate meant, but hearing Orville say this, it seemed like if they mated, it would mean the new sister-in-law won't run, and not mating would mean the new sister-in-law was not loyal. The little one was very disappointed with Elma. Meanwhile, Elma was in the other room, enjoying her bath, oblivious to the two young brothers talking. Her mind was currently occupied with the very comfortable bath that Sean had prepared. As she rested her head on the edge of the tub, she couldn't help but think of the things that have happened in her life. How fast the events have turned and they all happened so fast nothing ever prepared her for it. IN just a night, she found out her ex-fiance and her best friend are mated to each other. They planned to abandon her and she ended up falling down a cliff. She ended up in the territory of rogue brothers claiming she's their mate. Elma sighed and closed her eyes. At this moment, she felt her strength returning, her head was clear, and it seemed that her symptoms of cold and fever had also disappeared. Elma decided to pour and clean the water herself, but then the problem arose, she didn't have any change of clothes. She couldn't possibly put on the smelly clothes again after cleaning herself, that would be a waste of a bath. Elma started rummaging through cupboards, thankfully, she found a set of the twins' clothes. Although they were full of patches, they were clean and smelled of soapberries. She quickly put on the clothes, the clothes were too big, and she felt like she was crawling into a duvet cover but it was better than the dirty clothes she had or wear nothing at all. Elma rolled up the sleeves several times before her wrists showed, and did the same with the trouser legs. She tightened the belt around her waist, found a piece of grass string to tie around her waist, and then used the empty bucket to scoop the water out. It was hard work but she had already accepted the fact that if she's going to live in this house, she'll have to work hard for everything. She poured the water out after using the water to wash her clothes. She didn't want to waste it knowing that Sean worked so hard to fetch them. She made sure of putting it to good use. Sean was surprised to see her doing those things and attempted to help but she stopped him. Mercifully, the little boy obeyed. When she was done, she went straight to bed and rested when Sean came into the room and offered her some water. Elma, her eyes gleaming, looked at Sean. "I don't want water. I want to eat. I want dry food!" Sean looked at her and Elma couldn't read the expression on his face. Meanwhile, Sean couldn't believe what the woman just asked of him. A portion of dry food made into porridge could feed at least two people. This woman may be used to eating abundant food but abundance has never graced their home. After a moment of struggle, Sean finally couldn't refuse Elma. "We don't have dry food... but... we do have a baked potato." He had put it into the stove when he was heating water, planning to give it to his sweet-toothed Orville. He could never bear to eat it himself. He will just give it to Elma and he'll just put another potato on the stove later. When Brother goes out hunting, he'll go out early and cut more grass to exchange with the village aunties. "Then, a baked potato it is!" Elma felt like she was starving to death, and besides, baked potatoes were dry and filling. Unlike porridge, no matter how thick the porridge was, it would be gone after a couple of pees. Soon, Sean brought the baked potato to Elma. Elma broke the potato in half, steam wafting out, spreading a warm and sweet aroma. Elma couldn't wait to take a bite and when she did, she groaned in satisfaction from the delicious treat. Only after she ate the first bite with great enjoyment did she notice Sean standing by, salivating at the baked potato in her hand. Elma quickly handed him the other half of the potato: "Here," she said. "You can have the other half." Sean blinked and the look of envy in his earlier was replaced with a straight face. "I'm not hungry." Before Elma could further coax him into eating, Sean left the room.
