THIRD PERSON'S POV
Elma thought these people will kill her. There is no question about it. To them, she's just a stranger girl they don't know, and will not hesitate to punish her for what she did to poor Orville.
She didn't do anything but the villagers are keen on believing otherwise.
Iris, one of the villagers, has taken it too far by grabbing her and pushing her to the ground. As if it wasn't enough the others followed suit. Elma's face was rubbed back and forth on the icy ground by Iris. She was dragged from left to right, and the rough surface stung her skin fiercely. The metallic scent of blood instantly filled Elma's nostrils. She was bleeding and these people don't seem to care.
"You murderer! I'll make your life hell," Iris seethed. Her eyes were filled with cruel hatred, and her actions were ruthless.
Just as Elma was sinking into despair, a familiar voice rang out.
"Just what the hell do you think you're doing?"
"Let her go!"
Woodrow, carrying something on his shoulder, threw it to the ground, anger apparent as he stormed through the crowd. Rock, on the other hand, was approaching Elma. His scarred face was intimidating in itself, but now, filled with anger, he was even more terrifying.
The women, frightened by the twins' outburst, quickly released Elma. Iris too, startled, let go of her grip. Rock stepped forward, helped Elma to her feet, and saw her once beautiful face now bruised and bloody. Her charming fox-like eyes were misty, filled with pain and tears. Rock's heart twisted at the sight of her crying and helpless.
But then Elma was furious. Perhaps it was her dormant wolf's side that felt the need to take revenge.
The moment Rock helped her up, she turned to Iris and landed two strong slaps on her cheeks. The sound of it reverberated and if she had nails, it would have scraped Iris' cheeks.
Iris yelped and couldn't believe what Elma just did.
"How...How dare you!" she screeched and then lunged at Elma.
As Elma was about to dodge, she was pulled back by Rock. Then, she watched as Woodrow pushed Iris away.
Iris screamed as she landed on the ground because of Woodrow's push. She was looking at Woodrow with disbelief in her eyes. Elma discovered that there is nothing gentlemanly with these twins. But she doesn't care about that at the moment especially when Iris and the other villagers were literally planning to punish her for something she didn't even do.
Elma stood behind Rock, watching the twins. Both of them stood in front of her, like giant impenetrable walls. They were protecting her. Somehow, for a brief moment, she felt safe and secure.
However, recalling the purpose of these people coming to get her, Elma's heart sank once more. Rock and Woodrow had no idea that their brother is dead.
"Woodrow, Rock--"
She was cut by and angry voice from one of the villagers. "Woodrow! How dare you hit my daughter!" It was Iris's father, rushing over to help Iris up. But Iris was in too much pain to stand.
Woodrow ignored him, glaring at everyone with a cold, calculating glare. "Just what the f**k is going on here? Why are you attacking our wife while we're not here?"
It was the wolf in him. It was the wolf inside the twins' body that made them even more intimidating. Elma knows that even without their wolf side, the twins are extremely dangerous. But now, the wolf in them is on the verge of getting out but they were just suppressing it.
The human villagers felt the pressure that most of them took a step back and averted their gazes.
The village chief, Ben, finally said, "Woodrow, Rock, please prepare yourself for what I am about to say." The village chief looked at her briefly and then back to the twins before he said, "Myrna saw that woman kill Orville, so we came to arrest Elma and then call the police. This kind of wicked woman can't stay in the village. You didn't know, so we don't blame you for what just happened."
"Compensation is a must, he has injured my Iris!" Kelly, Iris' father, insisted.
"What? What did you just say?" Woodrow and Rock said in unison and without any other words, they rushed to Orville's room, ignoring the villagers.
Iris, recovering a bit, looked maliciously at Elma. Iris couldn't grasp the fact that the little witch Elma is the twins' wife. But now, it's about to change. Elma did something unforgivable. It doesn't matter if she did it or not. What matters is the twins would believe she did and they would kill her themselves.
Iris slowly stood up, clutching her stomach, and said to Ben, "Ben, if the twins kill Elma later, let's consider it as Elma's retribution. An eye for an eye. We can't send the twins to the police station."
Elma felt a chill in her heart, she had seen their faces just now. To be honest, if she was in the twins' position, she would go crazy too. She didn't have any siblings but losing a family is painful.
So, at this moment, she held no hope for the twins. They barely knew her. In their minds, she has the motive to kill someone. Would they believe her if she tells them that she didn't do it? She wanted to laugh at that stupid sliver of hope. She was just adopted back as their so-called 'fated mate', but Orville was their biological brother. Of course, they would believe the villagers.
"Yes, Iris is right, Ben, even if the Cecil twins accidentally kill her, we should still continue with the plan to drown her in the cesspit."
"The twins are not to be blamed if they end up killing this wretched murderer."
"If it weren't for him helping our village to drive away the wolves last year, not only livestock, we might have lost several lives too."
Several villagers chimed in, and naturally, the village chief agreed, "Let's do it this way."
The village was small and secluded, with its own rules that the police couldn't interfere with. However, if the twins were to kill someone, this could either be a minor or a major issue. If someone pursued the matter, they couldn't escape jail, and might even be executed on the spot, depending on the magistrate's mood. If no one pursued it, then naturally, there would be no problem.
Before long, Woodrow emerged from the room.
Elma looked at him and decided to make one last plea. "Woodrow, I didn't kill Orville."
She stared into his eyes, speaking seriously. Holding onto that hope that Woodrow would believe her.
But as she stared into Woodrow, she couldn't read the expression on his face. It was calm. A dangerous kind of calm. The kind of calm before a disastrous storm.
"Woodrow, she killed someone and should be sent to the police by right," said Ben, the village chief. "I know it's not easy for you to find a wife, but we really can't keep a woman like this."
"Yes, yes, call the police. If you want to vent your anger by beating her first, that's fine too," said another villager.
"It would also be a form of revenge for your brother Orville. Orville is dead, but you and Sean in still need to live."
"If this wife is gone, you can find another one. With Orville gone, life in your family will be a bit easier."
The villagers also started persuading him.
When someone mentioned Sean from the Cecil family, everyone realized that Sean was not in the yard.
"Where's Sean? He wasn't sold by Elma while Mr. Cecil was away, was he?" Iris was the first to ask.
"She might have killed him too!"
"Maybe she threw him into the cesspit."
"She's too cruel... Calling the police is too easy for her, we should beat her...beat this heartless creature..."
"She brought ruin to the Cecil family as soon as she arrived, such a woman should be drowned in the cesspit."
Voices echoed around her but she stopped hearing things. Her knees went weak.
Just when she thought she had survived the fall from the cliff, her hell of a life still does not end. Now, she's being accused of murdering someone.
How did she end up in a situation like this?
