Her expression remained calm and she seemed unaffected by what he had said. Amelia was struggling to come to terms with the pain of her mother’s death and the inevitable fate that awaited her in 3 years.
“I'll leave you to handle the necessary procedure.” She said.
Mr. Thompson admired Amelia’s strength. He couldn't bring himself to imagine what the poor girl must have been going through. That night, Amelia packed up a small duffel bag and left the house she had grown up in with her parents. The tears in her eyes dropped freely as she turned to spare one look at her family home and she realized she had lost everything now.
Her quest to find the money she needed to settle the loan sharks took her around the place and soon she became a wanderer moving from city to city never able to stay in one place for too long.
The loan shark sent people to find her but she knew about that and stayed one step ahead of them. The only thing she had was her life and she wasn't about to give that away just yet. She had a promise to her mother about staying alive and she intended on doing just that.
Soon she came into a town where she heard about a woman that might be able to get her a job that would help her stay hidden from the loan shark’s radar while making her earn just enough to get her loan settled in the shortest possible time. Amelia didn't trust the information but it was her first fig leaf and she had to see if it was real or not.
Amelia spent the night at a hotel using a fake name and the next morning, she went to the mansion of the woman she had heard about. Amelia wore a beat down sweatshirt and uncomfortable pants with a baseball cap on her head that kept her hidden in plain sight when she needed it.
The mansion was a massive stone complex with all the luxury of the rich. Amelia was taken in by the wealth before her but she knew not to let her guard down. The butler led her to a lobby that looked like a Queen’s ballroom and the butler told her to wait there.
Amelia waited and when the Butler returned with a tray holding a glass of high quality wine, Amelia declined the drink.
About half an hour later a man dressed in a fine cream suit approached her. He had a smile that he had cultivated overtime and Amelia could tell it worked on the rich but it was lost on her.
“Good day, sir.” Amelia greeted with a tight smile of her own.
She knew how she must look to him but she wasn't prepared to let him get the best of her. The man eyed her giving her a full scan with his cold eyes before saying, “You must be here about the job.”
“Yes. Yes sir.” Amelia said faster than she should. As much as she tried not to sound desperate she knew that ship had sailed with her recent response.
The man eyed Amelia again and she had the impression of being put on a human sized scale while he carefully measured her worth. He sighed. “Come with me.”
Amelia followed his lean frame constantly aware of her environment. She trusted the man just as much as she would trust a venomous snake.
They walked into an impressive hall and entered a door into an office. The man walked to a comfortable chair behind a rich oak desk and he gestured for Amelia to take the seat in front of him.
Amelia hesitated for a moment and studied the office paying attention to the paintings as modern interior decoration.
“You’re not very trusting, are you?” He said, raising a brow.
Amelia didn't say anything. She just lowered herself into the seat and watched him.
“You’ll work in the mansion as one of the maids. Is that okay with you?”
Amelia nodded. She knew she would be hidden from the loan shark in a place like this and if the pay was as good as she had heard then it was just what she needed to get her life back.
The man studied her again. Amelia had the impression of being put under a microscope. She wasn't comfortable being there with the man but she knew she had to because he was going to get her the job.
The butler returned and the man ordered him to get drinks. Amelia was about to turn down the offer but the man waved his long fingers and turned away as the butler disappeared.
“So tell me about yourself.” He said, leaning back in his chair.
Amelia had a back story that she had created to go with her new persona. She was Amy Wheeler and she had moved into town after her parents recent death in a ghastly car crash. The man listened to her story intently and when she was done he offered his condolences for her loss.
“It's fine.” She sniffed. “That's why I need this job.”
“I understand.” The man said, resting his arm on the desk. “So you have no one to turn to?”
“No.” Amelia said in a heartbeat.
The butler returned with the drinks. Amelia hesitated but she realized she needed it if she was going to ease up around her scary looking employer-to-be.
Amelia told the drink in one long gulp and slammed the glass hard on the oak desk.
Less than 5 minutes later she realized she had made a grave mistake. The world darkened before her and her fingers were clammy.
“What did you—” She fell out of the chair as her body went limp.
The last thing Amelia saw was the satisfied look on the man’s face.
