Auction

Amelia woke up to the powerful smell of bleach. The harsh smell squeezed her guts and she cringed, writhing her nose and retreating to the edge. The first thing Amelia noticed was that she wasn't in the office anymore. She was in a human sized cage. The next thing she noticed was that her clothes had been replaced with what looked like ragged fashioned to be wearable and smelled like body sweat from its former owners. Amelia tried to remember how she had ended up in that horrible, horrible place but she couldn't remember anything after taking the drink. He drugged me, she realized after a moment. She tried to move in the cage but she was hit by vertigo and slipped down, panting hard. The effects of the drugs hadn't worn off completely. Amelia stayed there counting from zero to ten and counting down to zero again. She tried to stand again after a while but the world around her spun out of control. On her third try, Amelia was able to crawl around the cage and she discovered there was nothing inside the damn thing apart from her and the clothes she wore. She made another slow crawl around to confirm her suspicion. “Is anyone there?” She said in a low barely audible voice. Amelia bit hard on her lip and tried again but it was no use. Her mouth felt like rubber and even though she could speak it wasn't loud enough to get the attention she needed. She tried until her voice became audible and after several attempts, she could hear herself. Her voice sounded raw and it hurt her throat everytime she used it but she had to try. “Hello! Anyone?” She yelled in the empty cage, her voice echoed. Just when she was about to give up she heard the sound of footsteps approaching. She wasn't sure what to expect but she kept her fingers crossed hoping whoever it was coming through the door would rescue her. To her greatest horror it was the same man that had offered her the job. He looked menacing and cruel as he approached the cage and Amelia crawled away sprawling into a fetal ball. “Stop the ruckus or I'll get in there and shut you up real good.” The menace in his voice chilled Amelia’s joints. “One more sound out of you and you'll be sorry.” He said and then spat into the cage. “But why—” Amelia cried. “Why did you do this to me?” His smile was anything but friendly. “It's nothing personal. It's just business, baby and the only thing keeping you alive is the worth you'll have to my clients. So be a good girl. I wouldn't want to have to mess the merchandise up a little.” Amelia recoiled from the realization of what his words meant. She had heard about the increasing risk of falling into the hands of human traffickers but she never thought would become a victim too. The realization that she was going to be treated as a commodity from that point on brought her great pain. She would have picked being handed over to the loan shark if she had a choice. Amelia tried to beg the man to let her go but he just mocked her and then broke her spirit by telling her there was no excuse. The man left her crying her eyes out. *** He arrived at the location earlier than he should and followed the secret passage into the most dangerous place on the planet. The guards following him were trained killers who wouldn't hesitate to pull out their gun on a child if they perceived the kid as a threat to the safety of the man they were tasked to protect. He walked almost as if he was hovering above ground level, graceful and magnificent long strides. The men and women around watched him and some regarded him with respect while some regarded him with fear. “You can stop here.” He said to his guards as he entered the room set out for the VIP members. He wasn't a VIP but he was the most important man in the room. With a satisfied smirk he realized they had been waiting for him. The man in front of the screened glass said, “The auction starts now.” A light came on inside the glass chamber and the specimens inside stirred. They were young attractive women but he watched one of them at the corner. There was something about her striking blue eyes and slightly parted lips that made him feel a tightness in his throat. He dismissed her from his mind and focused on the other women inside the glass box but his eyes wandered back to her. “I want that one.” A man gestured at the girl he had been watching. “Five million.” He said the amount like it was the lowest sum. “Fifteen million.” Another man said, raising his hand. They were all interested in the woman that had caught his attention—the woman he couldn't get his eyes off. He knew he had to have her no matter what. As if being pulled by a force he couldn’t understand, he moved closer to the glass. The women couldn't see them through the glass but when she turned it was almost as if she was looking directly into his soul. He felt a jolt move through his body and he knew there was no way around it. “I'll take her.” He said decisively. “One billion.”
