Chapter 6: Experiment with the First Mission

Caroline suddenly spoke, breaking the tense silence. “Elliot, thank you for coming. But Lucas still needs rest.” Elliot nodded. “Of course. I won’t stay long.” Before leaving, Elliot glanced at Caroline for a moment, as if wanting to say something, but in the end, he just nodded politely. Once he was gone, the room felt much quieter. Lucas let out a long sigh, staring at Caroline, who seemed deep in thought. “He’s your ex-boyfriend, isn’t he?” he asked, his voice not too loud. Caroline looked at him coldly. “What do you care? You never cared before.” Lucas could only remain silent. He knew he was facing his past and countless sins. But one thing he realized clearly—Elliot wasn’t just a threat to Lucas; he was also an opportunity to mend his relationship with Caroline and Emma. After Caroline took Emma out of the room to give them space, only Lucas and Elliot remained. The room was quiet, but the tension between them was palpable. Lucas was still lying on the bed, while Elliot stood casually, his hands in his pockets. His previously friendly smile slowly faded, replaced by a cold and calculating expression. “I don’t have time for small talk,” Elliot suddenly said, breaking the silence with a flat yet sharp tone. Lucas watched him closely, sensing that something significant was about to happen. “Caroline doesn’t deserve to live like this,” Elliot continued without hesitation. “She’s too good to be stuck with someone like you, Lucas.” Elliot stepped closer, looking at Ethan—or rather, Lucas’s body—with a gaze full of disdain. “I don’t know how you could be so cruel to make her life a living hell. Caroline deserves a better life. And I’m here to make sure she gets it.” Lucas clenched his fists under the blanket, trying to control his anger. “What do you mean?” Ethan asked in a flat tone, trying to imitate Lucas’s usual calm and arrogant demeanor. Elliot smirked slightly, then said, “I want you to divorce Caroline. Immediately. If you do, I’ll consider all your debts paid off.” Elliot paused, letting his words sink in before continuing, “In fact, if you need extra money to start a new life, I can provide it. Consider this a reward for... releasing her burden.” That statement stabbed Lucas’s pride like a dagger. He felt trampled, not only as Lucas but also as himself (Ethan). Memories of how his ex-girlfriend once used him for personal gain and how his professor stole his research came rushing back. The old wounds felt fresh again, and he struggled not to lose control. Lucas stared at Elliot with sharp eyes. He wouldn’t allow himself—or Lucas’s body—to be treated like this. With a cold tone, he replied, “So you think I’m just trash you can throw away? You think I’ll just give up because you throw some money at me?” Elliot raised an eyebrow, seemingly unsurprised by the response. “You and I both know, Lucas, that you don’t have a choice. You’ve been a burden to Caroline for too long. Isn’t it better for you to disappear from her life before you ruin it further?” Lucas growled internally, his anger boiling. But he held back, realizing this was a chance to gauge how far Elliot would go to get Caroline back. Elliot leaned in, bringing his face closer to Lucas’s. “Think carefully, Lucas. You know I’m right.” When Elliot finally stepped back and walked out of the room, Lucas could only watch him with determined eyes. In his heart, he swore he wouldn’t let this man get what he wanted so easily. If he had to fight for Caroline, Emma, and himself, then he would—by any means necessary. The system had also warned him that rebuilding a good relationship with Lucas’s family was the only key for Ethan to return to his own body. If he failed this mission, not only would Lucas’s body die, but Ethan’s life would never return. As Elliot turned and walked out of the room, a sly smile remained on his face. But inside Lucas, a new sense of determination emerged. Lucas might be a loser, but Ethan wouldn’t be. This was his chance to prove he was worthy of this second life. On the other hand, right in front of him, a holographic monitor flickered, hovering in the air with instructions he had yet to close. [First Mission] Increase points that will be accumulated into balance by securing the first woman. Lucas remained silent and clenched his teeth. “What do you mean by mission? You think I have to be rich to win back Caroline’s heart and trust? I refuse. This body—I never asked for it,” he grumbled in frustration. Then, the TV in the hospital room suddenly turned on, displaying news about a professor who had successfully discovered a modern treatment method for an incurable disease—Lazarus Syndrome. Ethan’s heart ached terribly. That was the research he had worked on day and night for months. The holographic monitor flickered again. [Accept the first mission!] A knock on the door startled Lucas. In his panic, his hand accidentally pressed the button to accept the first mission. He immediately regretted his action, but it was too late. A beautiful doctor entered with a tired expression, holding a patient’s chart. She approached Lucas with calm steps. Above her head, a label appeared that only he could see: [First Target. Lock or not?] Lucas’s heartbeat quickened. This didn’t make sense. “Hello, Mr. Greystone. How are you feeling?” the doctor asked kindly. “Just Lucas.” I… Lucas? Yes, I’m Lucas, he answered in his heart, feeling slightly nervous. “How do I feel? Very happy. You’re beautiful…” The words slipped out of Lucas’s mouth like an i***t. The doctor was initially surprised, then smiled knowingly. “It seems your second life is more enjoyable, huh?” she said while checking the IV drip. Lucas was taken aback. “You know I’m living a second life?” The doctor looked at him calmly. “Of course. Your heart stopped, and you came back to life. That’s a blessing, isn’t it?” Lucas fell silent. Panic rose again. Could the doctor see the system monitor in front of his face? Or was this just a coincidence? He then lay back down with the doctor’s help, trying to calm his mind. [Target locked!] the system announced. [Make physical contact to earn maximum points.] Lucas almost swore. He hadn’t even agreed yet. But he was also curious, wanting to test if this system was real or just a delusion. However, the shy and introverted Lucas lacked the courage to try. He decided to wait for the right moment. The next day, Lucas began to understand how this system worked. He was a smart man; it wasn’t difficult to figure out the mechanics. It seemed he had to build a deeper relationship with the doctor to complete his mission. But he didn’t want to do it forcefully. If this was meant to happen, he would do it his way. When the doctor returned to his room, Lucas decided to start a more personal conversation. “Doctor, may I know your name?” The doctor turned to him, looking slightly surprised. “Sorry, I haven’t introduced myself. I’m Dr. Alyssa Carter.” “Alyssa… A beautiful name,” Lucas said with a small smile. It was an awkward start, which surprised the doctor. But Lucas saw a miracle—his points increased. [Made the doctor blush, +5 points] and a message appeared on the phone that had just been returned by the medical staff. He received a notification that his bank account balance had increased by five million dollars. Lucas trembled! Was this real?
