Seventeen years passed since Monica and Mike had been directly involved with the government. They
only have one more year with their daughter Jessica and they have failed to tell her about this agreement
because they wanted to find a way to prevent it. Jessica wakes up, gets dressed and ready for her day, and
as she rushes down the stairs to leave with her best friend and her boyfriend Joey, as she nears the bottom,
she notices her parents and her little brother Jordan sitting at the table. She sat down at the table, her
parents asked Jordan to go upstairs to his room for a while so they could talk to Jessica.
“What’s going on?” Jessica said.
“Your mother and I have something to tell you.” Dad said.
“Ok, should I go tell my friends to go without me?” Jessica said.
“Yes, you’ll have to stay home today.” Dad said.
“Hey guys, I have to stay home today, see you tomorrow.” Jessica said. “Ok, hope everything’s ok.” Joey and Matt said.
“Thanks for your concern.” Jessica said.
(Jessica shuts the door and walks back to the dining room where her parents are seated, and sits quietly.)
“Before you were born, I and your mother made a deal with our old boss. We agreed that if he helped us have you that we would give you up on your 18’Th birthday.” Dad said.
“Why would you do that?” Jessica said.
“We had a hard time having kids, so we used a chemical formula your father made when he worked for the government to help us. We wanted a baby so badly.” Mom said.
“We regret this decision so much, so we think you should leave so they won’t find you here, which might also put us in danger.” Dad said.
"now I understand what my dream means" Jessica said.
"what?" (mom and dad say at the same time)
“a guy named J.Q came to me in my dream and told me that if I run he would kill my family for trying to save me, so I can’t do that.” Jessica said.
“They will kill you and all of us if you stay here.” Dad said”
(in irritation Jessica gets up and walks out the door.)
birthday draws near and her trust for her parent dwindle over time and she leaves the house every night
to go to her boyfriends to sleep and since his parents are always out of town she practically lives there, she
crawls into bed beside him every night at 12am after her shift.
When she dozes off in to a deep sleep she sees the monster she fears she will become and the closer
it gets the heavier and more vivid the dreams are and as she is rolling and talking in her sleep joey shakes
Jess saying wake up, which causes her to take a swing in his direction and he jumps off the bed to dodge
the attack.
That morning she looks at the date and she noticed today is May tenth, sighing she shakes Joey
awake and tells him tomorrow is my birthday and I can’t wait for it to be over, he smiles at her and says
your day of birth is a time of celebration not doom and gloom, he kisses her with such softness I can feel
her relax.
I smile at him and kiss him back and agree with what he is saying even though I already know what I haft to
do to protect the people I care about, so I jump on top of him and take him in slowly all morning just
enjoying his smell and the sweetness of his body wash that is still lingering from last night’s shower, we
don’t get up till 11am and when I see the time I run into the shower and I’m out in 5 minutes, I kiss him and
tell him, I don’t want to miss the last day of my senior year and since I’m not doing the ceremony, after today I am a graduate (I say as I walk out the door) My
old life will be wrapped up and I can disappear with my family intact and my deal with J.Q. kept, I would end
my life later today.
I wait for my teacher Mrs. Bloomberg to grade my test and give me the results as I wait I plan out my
next moves after I leave this town and my ordinary life behind, 5 mins later she hand me my last report card
and says congrats you are now a graduate and hands me my laminated diploma, I smile and thank her and
leave the room I get into my car and speed out of the parking lot towards the bridge going over the river
that me and my friends love to come too when we were your young and had our full lives ahead of us, we
fished and went swimming.
I am thinking of these fond memories with my friends I swerve into a semi coming the opposite way
from me knocking me against the side of the bridge where it was crumbling from the last wreck knocking
me into the cold but inviting feeling of water as my car sinks to the bottom with me inside and as I drift into
oblivion I feel myself pushing me to zap me to the first place I think of my Uncles abandon cabin in the deep
woods in South Dakota in the mountains, I look around and as I drift off to sleep I see someone looking at
me with a devilish smile saying well done.
