Chapter 3

790 Words
Scarlett's POV: If I hadn't clung to the coffin with every ounce of strength I had, that kick probably would have sent me sprawling across the ground. "Warren," I shouted, "Mila is your daughter too! How can you keep saying I'm cursing my own child?" "Can't you see the headstone?" I cried, pointing toward it. "No matter how jealous you think I am, would I ever joke about my own daughter's death?" I desperately urged Warren to look at the inscription, but the lettering I had carefully paid to have engraved had already been smeared and blurred beyond recognition. Warren let out a cold laugh. "What? You thought smudging the words would stop me from figuring out who's buried here? Fine. I'll ask the cemetery administrator myself." Certain that the coffin contained my so-called lover, Warren immediately ordered someone to bring over the burial records from Greenhaven Memorial Park. That was when I noticed Lilian's expression change, and the color drained from her face. In an instant, I understood—it was her. Maybe Warren truly didn't believe Mila was dead, but Lilian knew. She had known all along, and everything she was doing was intentional. I had just opened my mouth to expose her when her eyes suddenly reddened. She pointed toward the coffin and said softly, "Warren, look. Doesn't that engraving say 'The Only Love of My Life'?" Both Warren and I turned toward the coffin, and the words were there, but I had never carved them. The moment Warren saw the inscription, his expression darkened, and he started walking toward me. My heart sank; I knew he wasn't going to leave Mila alone. Giving up all pride, I begged, "Warren, please. I'm begging you. Don't touch Mila. It's really her. Please don't do this." Tears streamed down my face as I looked at him, hoping that after all our years of marriage, he would believe me just once. Instead, my desperation only convinced him further that someone important to me was inside that coffin. "Get Scarlett away from it," he ordered coldly. The men he brought obeyed immediately, several of them apologizing under their breath as they pried me loose. One grabbed my legs while another forced my fingers from the coffin one by one. Within moments, they dragged me away and threw me onto the ground beside it. Almost immediately, Warren lifted the lid. The urn containing Mila's ashes appeared before everyone, and I collapsed to my knees, pleading through sobs. "Warren," I cried, bowing my head, "If there's any humanity left in you, put her back. Please let her rest in peace. Please." I stared at him desperately as Warren looked from me to the urn. Then he smiled, and the smile sent chills down my spine. Before I could say another word, he opened the urn, and in an instant, Mila's ashes scattered across the ground. "You b***h," he sneered. "Since they're so important to you, go pick them up." I watched my daughter's ashes drift into the wind, and at that moment, it felt as though someone had ripped my heart from my chest. "No..." I lunged forward frantically, trying to gather them, to hold on to any piece of her that remained, but the wind was too strong. The ashes slipped through my fingers, and no matter how desperately I tried, I couldn't keep them from blowing away. All I could do was watch as Mila left me forever. Slowly, I turned toward Warren and Lilian. Warren stood there looking pleased with himself, while Lilian wore a smug expression. For the first time in my life, I wanted to kill someone. I wanted both of them dead, but my body finally gave out. A mouthful of blood burst from my lips, and I saw Warren's face change instantly. Shock flashed across his eyes as he rushed toward me without hesitation. "Scarlett!" he shouted. "What's wrong with you?" Using the last of my strength, I shoved him away, then smiled—a broken, bitter smile. "You'll pay for this," I whispered hoarsely. "Both of you will." Just then, a voice interrupted us. "Were you the people asking about the burial records for Plot 86?" The cemetery administrator had arrived. He looked around at the chaotic scene in confusion before opening the registry book in his hands. After checking the entry, he looked up and announced, "The person buried in Plot 86 is Mila Monroe." "What... what did you say?" Warren's legs buckled, and he collapsed onto the ground.
