FOURTEEN Kelly and Carol managed to polish off their first bottle of wine within half an hour of opening it. Before Kelly could stop her, or at least ask her to slow down, Carol had plucked the cork from the second one and was splashing into Kelly’s glass. The velvety smoothness of the Merlot slid down Kelly’s throat, immediately warming her from the inside. She was not used to drinking red wine so quickly, but the pleasurable effect it was having on her as both a relaxant as well as a painkiller, made Kelly realise just how much she needed this to escape the realities of her life, even if it were only for a few precious hours. The music which Carol had chosen for background was purely instrumental and the inspired combination of pan pipes, percussion, and timpani set the mood perfectly
