Hardy had just finished the morning briefing when word reached him via a junior officer that Superintendent Carlisle wanted to see him. He passed his papers over to a very groggy-looking Sergeant Russell and made his way along the corridor to the superintendent’s office. Hardy knocked and waited. Carlisle had a habit of making his junior officers wait outside his office for at least five seconds before he would answer to their knock. Hardy had heard a rumour from one of his colleagues, that the superintendent had let slip once at a Christmas party, that he purposely kept his officers waiting outside his door, as a way of unnerving them. Hardy believed the story, but as to whether the reason behind it was to be believed, that was still up for consideration. As far as Hardy was concerne
