Once the two officers left the flat, Kelly broke down once again, only this time she cried for a full twenty minutes without let-up. Carol, for her part, judged that this was not the right moment to try and persuade her friend that her husband was no great loss and if anything, she should be celebrating finally being free of him.
Instead, she decided to just be there for Kelly. She wrapped her arms around her friend and sat there with her until Kelly’s sobs finally subsided.
Eventually, Kelly ceased her sobbing and grabbed some fresh tissues to dry her cheeks.
Carol poured them both a fresh glass of wine and handed one to Kelly.
Kelly grabbed hers, almost spilling the contents in the process. She clinked against Carol’s and downed the warming liquid in one gulp.
