The sirens were fading into the distance as the authorities hauled Julian away. The silence that rushed back into the villa was heavy, thick with the scent of ozone, rain, and the unspoken words between us.
Lorenzo stood in the center of the foyer, his white dress shirt torn at the shoulder, his knuckles bruised. He looked like a man who had gone to hell and back, but his eyes—those dark, stormy Italian eyes—were fixed solely on me.
"Elena," he rasped.
I didn't wait. I crossed the marble floor in a blur, throwing myself into his arms. He caught me with a groan, his hands slamming into my back to pull me flush against him. He held me so tight I could feel the frantic, heavy thud of his heart against my chest.
"I thought I lost you," he whispered into my hair, his voice breaking. "When I heard him mention your name, when I thought he might touch you..."
I pulled back just enough to look at him. "You didn't lose me. I'm not going anywhere, Lorenzo. Not ever."
The "Arrogant Boss" was gone. In his place was a man starved for the woman in front of him. He didn't ask this time. He gripped the back of my neck, his fingers tangling in my hair, and crashed his lips onto mine.
It wasn't like the first kiss. This was desperate. It was a claim. It was the sound of a man who had spent his life behind stone walls finally tearing them down.
He lifted me effortlessly, my legs wrapping around his waist as he backed me toward the heavy oak door of the study. He didn't stop kissing me, his tongue tasting of iron and heat, his hands wandering over the silk of my dress as if he were trying to memorize my body through the fabric.
He slammed the door shut with his heel, the sound echoing through the empty house. He pressed me against the wood, his body a solid, burning weight against mine.
"I spent weeks trying to stay away from you," he growled against my throat, his breath hot and ragged. "I spent every night in this house wanting to come to your room, to show you exactly what you were doing to me."
"Then show me," I breathed, my hands tugging at his tie, needing to feel the skin beneath. "No more secrets, Lorenzo. No more walls."
He let out a low, guttural sound—a mix of a laugh and a snarl—and captured my mouth again. The kiss was deep, dizzying, and filled with a hunger that had been building since the moment I walked through his gates.
In the dark of the villa, surrounded by the ghosts of his past, he wasn't my boss anymore. And I wasn't his servant. We were two fires finally allowed to burn together.
"You're mine," he whispered against my skin, his voice a possessive promise. "Every inch of you. Every breath. Mine."
"And you're mine," I replied, pulling him back down to me.
The world outside could have been ending, the villa could have been falling to pieces, but in that moment, the only thing that mattered was the heat of his touch and the fact that, for the first time in my life, I wasn't just safe—I was wanted.
