John ran to the locker room and quickly changed into his green scrubs before he leaped up the stairs to the ground floor. There was a maze of corridors leading towards the emergency ward, but he knew this place by heart and a few seconds later he was at the door, almost crashing into one of the ward nurses who was hurriedly exiting the emergency room.
“Dr Hendricks! Good you’re here. The first ambulances will arrive in just a few minutes. I fear it will be a busy night.”
The nurse opened the door for him, but as soon as he entered, he immediately stopped in his tracks - completely overwhelmed by emotions as the scent he had sensed earlier in the elevator now flooded his senses. A soft blend of sweet magnolias and fresh morning dew overpowered him completely, and his eyes vigilantly scanned the room for its source. Whom did this intriguing scent belong to?
He totally forgot how to breathe when he saw her.
The woman in front of him was wickedly beautiful. Her scent filled his senses to the brim, and while his jaw dropped, his heart skipped a beat. Who was this human? She was standing next to a printer, wearing blue scrubs and a white lab coat, studying an ECG she was holding in her hand. She had a little frown on her face and was absentmindedly biting her lip, and he had to swallow as he was struck by a sudden desire to walk straight over to her and crash his lips into hers! However, she just stood there, looking at the ECG, fixing a strand of hair that had escaped her long blonde braid - totally unaware of the effect she had on him.
“Who is that?” he grunted to the nurse by his side, staring at the woman in front of him.
“Who? You mean dr McKay?” The nurse looked at him with surprise. “She’s a cardiologist. She is supposed to be here, there is an MI coming in, and besides, it’s all hands on deck tonight.” The nurse had misunderstood him, thinking he was annoyed to see a cardiologist there. He couldn't care less! The only thing that mattered right now was who this spellbinding woman was.
John had a hard time controlling himself, and he was surprised at his own reaction. He had never responded this way to a human before! But here he was, drooling over this human girl. All he could think of was that he wanted to rip off her scrubs and coat, release her hair from that braid and swoop her up in his arms. He wanted to carry her out of this place, far far away, and never come back.
But it was not until she looked up, her brilliant hazel eyes meeting his, that he lost it completely.
“Mine!” his inner wolf roared, stirring inside of him, trying to take control.
“No!” John barked, making the nurse next to him jump with fear.
“Sorry, I mean, no problem,” John tried to smooth things over.
The nurse was looking at him suspiciously, but then she nodded and turned around.

Isabel had been carefully studying the ECG of the incoming patient with an MI when, all of a sudden, she had sensed a burning sensation, similar to the one she had experienced in the woods... As if someone was watching her. She lifted her gaze to scan the room when suddenly, she noticed a handsome young surgeon that she had never seen before. He was wearing green scrubs and a white lab coat, and his unruly black hair gave him a mischievous look that made her weak at the knees. He was talking with one of the nurses, but then unexpectedly, as her gaze had met his, something had shifted in his eyes. For a moment, she almost thought they were glowing, but then she blinked and his eyes looked normal again.
“No!” he said forcefully, making Isabel gasp and drop the ECG on the floor. What happened?
Within the blink of an eye, he was by her side, swiftly picking up the ECG and handing it over to her. She swallowed. Desperately, she tried to find something to say, but she… simply couldn’t. Speechless, a vague smile curved her lips, and she could swear she could hear a soft growl form in his chest. She was quite tall herself, however, he was much taller than her, and as he stood so close, she had to lift her chin to look him in the eyes.
“Thank you,” she finally managed to say.
“You’re welcome, Dr McKay,” he gave her a wry smile, his intense brown eyes scanning her face. “I heard we have a rough night ahead of us.”
“It seems like it,” she replied, not really knowing what she was saying. All she could think of right now was him being so close! She noticed his broad shoulders and strong arms, and she could perceive his well-built torso underneath the scrubs. He had a very seductive masculine scent, and she felt a sudden urge to get closer to him. She wanted to touch him, desperately! What was wrong with her? This was very inappropriate, she scolded herself. But still... So tempting. Luckily, she was holding the ECG in her hands, or else she would perhaps not have been able to stop herself from trailing her hands over his chest.
“Dr Hendricks? Dr McKay?” the nurse’s voice woke them up from their mutual bedazzlement, bringing them back to reality. “The ambulances are here, you better hurry up.”
Victims from the car crash came flooding the emergency ward, and Isabel and John had to start working, their gazes meeting from time to time as they ran between patients screaming with pain. They were all working together, doctors and nurses from all fields, due to the extreme situation everyone was needed. Patients were sent for CT scans and x-rays, broken bones were dealt with by the orthopedics and wounds were cleaned and stitched. The man who had suffered a heart attack couldn't be resuscitated, and Isabel had to declare him deceased after several attempts.
When most patients had been taken care of, things finally started to calm down and John smiled at her reassuringly. They were just about to talk to each other for the first time in several hours when, suddenly, one of their patients crashed, his blood pressure rapidly sinking.
"Dr Hendricks!" one of the nurses called out. John was immediately by the patient's side.
"Get me a bag of Saline, now!" John shouted. "Get him to surgery immediately," he commanded his team.
Just as he was about to run out of the room, he stopped by the door, scanning the room until his eyes hungrily met Isabel's. She felt an urge to go with him, not wanting to lose track of him... But one of the nurses was tugging her arm, wanting her attention, and the next time she looked up, he was gone.
