Samuel stood holding an umbrella, waiting for me at the library entrance. Rain was pouring down hard. He held the umbrella loosely in one hand. His calm, dignified presence drew countless glances from people passing by, whether they meant to look or not. When he saw me walking out, a faint softness touched his usually unreadable eyes.
