The Morning Routine
Grace stood in the kitchen, the rich aroma of coffee wafting through the air as she flipped pancakes on the griddle. She felt a sense of contentment wash over her, filled with the warmth of the morning sun filtering through the window. It was one of those peaceful moments that reminded her of the bliss she felt on her wedding day.
But as the clock ticked closer to her departure time for work, she realized that Daniel was still in bed. After weeks of decorating their new home and adjusting to the rhythm of married life, Grace had hoped they would establish a comforting morning routine together.
“Daniel!” she called, her voice cheerful yet tinged with concern. “Are you coming to breakfast?”
Silence met her reply, and she could feel a pang of disappointment. Grace had envisioned shared breakfasts as a sacred time bonding over steaming cups of coffee and the promise of a new day. Making breakfast alone felt foreign, yet she carried on, plating the pancakes and pouring syrup, setting a plate at the table for him.
After a few more minutes of waiting, she finally made her way to their bedroom, gently pushing the door open. The sight before her stirred a mix of frustration and concern. Daniel lay sprawled across the bed, snoring softly, oblivious to the world outside.
“Daniel!” she exclaimed again, this time with a sense of urgency. She walked over to him, shaking his shoulder gently. “You said you’d wake up early today!”
Daniel stirred slightly but didn’t fully wake. “Just five more minutes…” he mumbled, burying his face in the pillow.
Grace couldn’t help but feel her heart sink a little. It wasn’t the first time he had chosen sleep over spending time with her. After the honeymoon period, the reality of their differing schedules and priorities had begun to surface.
“Fine, I’ll let you sleep,” she said with forced optimism. She turned to leave but paused at the door, taking a deep breath. “But you’re going to miss out on a delicious breakfast, and I was hoping we could talk about our plans for the week.”
She waited a moment, hoping for a response, but all she heard was the soft rhythm of his breathing. Resigned, she walked back to the kitchen. As she prepared a coffee to go, her mind raced. Should she continue to be patient? Wasn’t marriage about compromise?
Finally, with her bag slung over her shoulder and her heart heavy, she slipped out the door, leaving a note on the counter. “I made pancakes! Call me when you wake up. Love you!”
As Grace drove to work, her mind wandered to the expectations she had of married life. They were supposed to be partners in everything, experiencing the joys and challenges together. She longed for deeper connection and consistent communication, but life felt more like a balancing act than the seamless dance she envisioned.
At the office, Grace found herself distracted, her colleagues chattering away about their weekend plans. She struggled to focus on her tasks, constantly worrying about Daniel and their mornings. Did she need to address this pattern, or would it resolve itself over time?
By the end of the day, she had only a few things crossed off her to-do list. The clock on the wall ticked down as she packed her bag, and the thought of walking in on Daniel asleep again filled her with unease.
“Hey, Grace!” her coworker, Rachel, called out, pulling her from her thoughts. “Any plans tonight?”
Grace paused, trying to gather her emotions. “Not really. Just going home to relax,” she replied, forcing a smile. “Maybe cook something nice.”
Rachel frowned, noticing Grace's distant demeanor. “Everything okay with you and Daniel? You seem a bit off.”
“I think it’s just…life settling in after the wedding. Trying to adjust to married life, you know?” Grace sighed, running her fingers through her hair. “I just wish we could find time for each other in the mornings.”
“Oh, that’s important! Have you talked to him about it?” Rachel asked. “Setting aside time for each other, even if it’s just fifteen minutes over coffee, can make a huge difference.”
“I know, I just need to figure out the best way to approach the conversation,” Grace mused, grateful for her friend’s insights. “I hope it doesn’t come across as nagging.”
“Just be honest. You two are partners now, and it’s okay to express your needs,” Rachel encouraged.
“Thanks, Rachel. I appreciate your support.” Grace smiled, feeling a bit more resolute. “I’ll definitely bring it up tonight.”
As she made her way home, Grace considered how she could initiate the conversation with Daniel. Tonight could be the night they’d lay a foundation for their mornings together, but how could she communicate her feelings without overwhelming him?
Upon arriving home, she caught sight of Daniel sitting on the couch with a video game controller in hand, his eyes glued to the screen. He looked up as she entered, his face lighting up with a smile.
“Hey, you’re back! I hope you saved me some pancakes!” he called out playfully, the distraction of the game momentarily forgotten.
Grace felt a flicker of joy at his smile despite her earlier frustrations melting away. “Actually, I did! But are you still hungry, or…?”
Daniel set the controller down, standing to come over and hug her. “I can always eat! How was work?”
Grace hesitated, but his warmth encouraged her. “Work was fine, but I wanted to talk about something that’s been on my mind. Can we sit down?”
“Sure! Is everything okay?” he asked, concern flashing across his face.
“Yeah, everything’s okay. I just feel like we need to discuss our mornings a bit. I miss having that time together,” she admitted, her voice steady but vulnerable.
Daniel nodded, understanding lacing his features. “I get that. I’m sorry if I haven’t been pulling my weight. It’s just been tough adjusting, you know?”
“Yes, I completely understand,” Grace replied gently. “I just wanted to see if we could instate a morning routine, maybe set aside some time for breakfast together, even if it’s just a quick coffee before we head off to work.”
He paused, contemplating her words. “I like that idea. I want to make sure we nurture our connection, even in the small moments.”
A wave of relief washed over Grace. “Thank you! I think it would help us feel more connected, especially as we transition into married life.”
“Let’s try it! I promise to make a conscious effort to be more present in the mornings,” he said, smiling at her with sincerity.
They embraced, a sense of newfound understanding filling the space between them. Grace remembered her prayer from their wedding day—now, she felt a part of that vision cementing into reality.
As they began cooking dinner together, the comforting rhythm of teamwork enveloped them. The music played softly in the background as the two laughed, chopped vegetables, and shared snippets of their day. With each shared moment, Grace felt their connection strengthen, the seeds of affection planted deeply.
That night, as they settled on the couch with dinner, the weight of earlier concerns drifted away. Together, they discussed their hopes for the future, plans for the weekend, and dreams that continued to unfold as they built their lives together.
As bedtime approached, Grace smiled to herself, grateful for the art of listening that illuminated their relationship. Making time for each other wouldn’t always be easy, but with intentionality and open communication, she felt confident they could navigate their journey in marriage—together.
With newfound hope and understanding, she drifted off to sleep, ready to embrace the morning ahead, hand in hand with Daniel.
