LILY It had been two hours. Two long, agonizing hours of waiting for the scan results. And in those two hours, not much had been said. Ronald lay on the hospital bed, one arm resting stiffly at his side, the other across his stomach. The thin curtain around his bed barely gave any sense of privacy, voices from other patients drifting in and out, but none of that mattered because all I could focus on was him. On the way his jaw tightened every few minutes like he was fighting through the pain, his fingers curled slightly whenever he shifted, like even the smallest movement hurt and he hadn’t complained once. I sat beside him, my hands clasped tightly together in my lap, my nails digging into my skin as if that would ground me, as if that would steady the unease clawing its way through
