“You’ve been avoiding me.”
I closed my eyes before slowly turning around, bracing myself for what was coming. Ronald stood a distance behind me, hands in his pockets like he had all the time in the world.
“I wasn’t aware I owed you my attention,” my tone even. I folded my arms across my chest for stability.
He pursed his lips briefly before letting out a breath, shaking his head. “Can we not do this right now, Lily?” His voice was low but controlled, as if he were holding back. “I’m not here to argue.”
I let out a short, humorless laugh. “That’s funny, because it sounds like you are.”
He took a step closer, closing some of the distance between us. I fought the instinct to step back. “I’m serious,” he insisted, his gaze locking onto mine. “I just… I need to say something.”
