After a night of tears, laughter, and far too much ice cream, Isadora felt a spark of strength she hadn’t experienced in weeks. The emotional weight of her pregnancy and the heartbreak from Max’s betrayal were still there, but they no longer felt like insurmountable mountains. For the first time in a long while, Isadora felt ready to face the world again, and more importantly, she felt ready to face her work.
The next morning, she got up, showered, and put on one of her favourite power suits. Her reflection in the mirror still showed a hint of the wear and tear of the past few weeks, but she held her chin high. She wasn’t just doing this for herself anymore. She had a child to think about now, and that meant she had to get her company back on track.
Arriving at the office, Isadora took a deep breath before stepping through the doors. She could feel the eyes of her employees on her, many of whom hadn’t seen her in over a two weeks. She kept her shoulders squared and nodded curtly as she made her way to her office.
Vivienne, who had been diligently holding down the fort during Isadora’s absence, practically jumped out of her chair when she saw her walk in. “Isa? What—what are you doing here?” she exclaimed, rushing over to her friend. “I didn’t expect you to be back so soon.”
“Neither did I.” Isadora admitted with a small smile, “But I’m feeling better. I needed to come back. We have a lot of work to do if we’re going to get this company back on its feet.”
Vivienne studied her friend for a moment, a mixture of surprise and admiration in her eyes. “You’re really ready for this?”
Isadora nodded. “I am. There’s no more time to waste.”
Vivienne grinned, clearly relieved. “Well, in that case, we’re going to need a plan. Things have been… tough, to say the least, but I’ve been keeping the basics going.”
Isadora’s expression hardened with determination. “Good. Let’s start by getting everyone together for a meeting. It’s time to get this company moving again.”
Within the hour, Isadora had gathered all her department heads and key staff for an impromptu meeting. The room was filled with nervous energy—her employees were clearly eager for direction after weeks of uncertainty. Isadora stood at the head of the conference table, scanning their faces.
“Thank you all for coming.” she began, her voice strong and commanding. “I know the past few weeks have been difficult. We’ve lost some key partnerships, our sales have plummeted, and there’s a lot of work to be done. But I want you to know that we’re not done. This company is not going to fail.”
The room was silent, her words sinking in.
“I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about where we went wrong and how we can get back on track. But none of this will work without all of you. I need every single one of you to give me your best. We’re going to rebuild, we’re going to be stronger than before, and we’re going to make this company something people respect again.”
As Isadora spoke, she began outlining her vision. She shared new strategies for marketing, plans for restructuring the sales department, and proposed more aggressive pitches to potential partners. It was a long meeting, filled with charts, goals, and deadlines, but as the hours passed, the room began to fill with something it hadn’t seen in weeks—hope.
When the meeting finally ended, Vivienne and Isadora walked back to her office, both exhausted but satisfied with how things had gone.
“You were incredible!” Vivienne said, glancing sideways at her friend as they made their way down the hall. “I’m not sure how you do it, but you’ve managed to light a fire under everyone again.”
Isadora smiled faintly, rubbing her temple. “I’m exhausted, but we needed that. I needed that.”
They entered her office to find, unsurprisingly, Lysandra lounging on the couch. She had an array of takeout containers spread across the coffee table and was halfway through a massive salad when she spotted them.
“Well, look who’s back from the dead!” Lysandra exclaimed with a grin, tossing a cherry tomato into her mouth. “You actually went to work today? Who are you and what have you done with my friend?”
Isadora shook her head in amusement. “I had to get back sooner or later.”
Lysandra sat up, glancing between Isadora and Vivienne with a gleam in her eye. “Well, it’s a good thing I brought enough food for the three of us. I was just making sure my god baby has all the nutrients they need.”
Vivienne snorted. “God baby? What makes you think you’re going to be the godmother?”
“Please!” Lysandra scoffed, leaning back against the couch. “I’m the most fun, the most stylish, and clearly the most responsible choice. Obviously, I’m going to be the best godmother.”
Vivienne rolled her eyes. “Being fun doesn’t make you the best godmother. Isa needs someone dependable, someone who will actually be around for the kid, not someone who’s jetting off to photoshoots every other week.”
Lysandra opened her mouth to retort, but then as if struck by the sudden realization of Isadora’s presence, her expression changed. She turned to Isadora, her face serious for once. “Wait a minute… Isa, have you decided? Are you… are you going to keep the baby?”
The question hung in the air, the playful banter disappearing in an instant.
Isadora took a deep breath, looking down at her hands for a moment before meeting Lysandra’s eyes. “Yes, I’ve decided. I’m keeping the baby.”
Lysandra and Vivienne exchanged glances, their expressions unreadable.
“And Max?” Vivienne asked carefully. “Are you going to tell him?”
Isadora hesitated for a moment, her heart heavy. “Yes...” she finally said. “I don’t want to keep a child from their father, no matter what happened between us. He deserves to know.”
There was a beat of silence before Lysandra nodded approvingly. “That’s the right thing to do. As much as I hate that man right now, the baby deserves to have both parents in their life—if that’s what you want.”
Isadora leaned back in her chair, feeling the weight of the decision settle on her shoulders. “It’s not what I wanted.” she admitted, her voice soft. “But it’s the reality now. I’m going to raise this baby, and I need to face the fact that Max is a part of that.”
Lysandra, always quick to voice her opinions, leaned forward with a scowl. “I hope he steps up. If he doesn’t, I swear I’ll—”
“Let’s not jump to conclusions.” Vivienne interrupted, placing a hand on Lysandra’s arm. “We don’t know how Max will react yet. Isa, when do you plan to tell him?”
“I’m not sure.” Isadora said, rubbing her temples. “I want to tell him soon, but I need to figure out how. It’s not exactly the easiest conversation.”
“You don’t have to rush it.” Vivienne said gently. “Take your time, and we’ll be here with you, no matter what.”
Lysandra stood up, pacing back and forth in her usual dramatic fashion. “You know what? Let’s not dwell on him right now. We’ve got bigger things to worry about. Like baby names!” She spun around to face Isadora, her eyes gleaming with excitement. “Have you thought of any? What about something fun? Something with flair!”
Vivienne rolled her eyes. “We’re really going to talk about baby names already?”
“Why not?” Lysandra said, undeterred. “We might as well get a head start. Besides, I’m sure Isa’s already thought about it. Haven’t you?”
Isadora smiled faintly, feeling a warmth spread through her chest. Despite everything—despite Max, the uncertainty of the future, and the weight of the decisions she had to make—she had her friends. They were her anchor, her support, and in moments like this, they made the chaos a little more bearable.
“No names yet.” Isadora said, chuckling softly. “But I’ll let you know when I come up with something.”
Lysandra grinned. “Good, because I have ‘a lot’ of suggestions.”
As the afternoon wore on, the tension in the room lightened. The three women, despite their looming challenges, fell back into their familiar rhythm of banter, laughter, and playful arguments. For the first time in a long while, Isadora felt like she was stepping back into herself—into the person she used to be before Max’s betrayal, before everything started falling apart.
She had a long road ahead of her. There were still tough conversations to be had with Max, still countless hurdles to overcome at work. But for now, surrounded by her closest friends, Isadora allowed herself to breathe.
And that, she realized, was a start.
