DONOVAN’S POV

“Mum, seriously, what is this all about?”

Alpha Gregory or whatever the f**k his name was had the audacity to step forward and attempt to take my hand. “It is an honor to meet you, Your Majesty—”

My eyes turned the deepest shade of blue and my claws extended. “Come any closer and I will f*****g gut you.”

I had barely gotten over the fact that I was shocked seeing him again, and he was suddenly my husband?

I think the f**k not.

“Mother... tell me you're joking.”

A smile broke out on her face first, before it morphed into full-on laughter. “That was a joke,” my mother said, and that was the only time that I calmed down, even though I was still skeptical.

I glared at her. “So, what is all of this about?” I asked, waving my hand.

My mother folded her arms. “Alpha Gale here is not your mate yet, but he stands a chance to be,” she said.

“Huh?”

“You need to find a mate, Donnie. I need to retire, and you cannot get the throne if you still continue to act the way you are right now…”

“And what, the best thing that you can do is to find a man to tie me down?” I asked, incredulous. I could not even recognize the woman that I was looking at right now… scratch that, this was exactly what my mother was capable of saying.

I loved my mother so much, but when she went ahead to do things like this, it got on my last nerve, seriously.

“An Alpha will protect you.”

“I can f*****g protect myself!”

She glared at me. “Language, Donovan!”

I bit my tongue with great effort just so that I did not keep talking and making things worse for myself.

“So what is your plan?” I asked my mother.

“There will be a contest; seven Alpha men will fight…”

“Huh?”

“They will compete to see who is strong enough to deserve you,” she said.

“Now you have officially lost your mind, Rachael.”

“This is serious, Donovan.”

I rolled my eyes so far back that they almost got stuck in the back of my head. The thing about my mother was that once her mind gets made up on some ridiculous idea or another, she was never going to see reason until she followed it through...

“Alright, what is he doing at our house then?” I asked, barely sparing f*****g Gale a second glance.

“I said the contest was for strength and not riches, Donovan.”

For the absolute love of the Moon Goddess…

A sarcastic laugh tore out of my throat. “You are telling me that you came all the way from the Moon Beam Pack to participate in some contest to win my heart when you don’t even have a place to stay?” I scoffed. “Just exactly how desperate are you?”

Before he could reply, I raised my hand, effectively cutting him off. “Forget it, I am really not f*****g interested… you are an Alpha anyways, nothing your kind does ever makes any sense.”

“Donovan!”

I turned to my mother and folded my arms. “Even though I say that I don’t want this, are you really still going to forge ahead?”

She took both my hands in hers. “It has been two years, baby. We cannot keep waiting for your mystery man from that night.”

My entire face turned hot, and I was pretty sure that I was a flaming red color from my feet to the tips of my ears.

From the corner of my eye, I saw that asshole smirk. It was faint, and if you blinked too fast you would have missed it, but I didn’t.

I became ten times even more embarrassed, wishing that the ground would just open up and swallow me.

Seriously, Moon Goddess, now would be the right time.

But as usual, nothing.

I was still standing here in front of a man that probably had a swelling ego now that he knew that I had been thinking about him for the last two years.

Well, he was just an excuse for me to stall my mother, but whatever, now he knew and it could not get any worse than this.

Fuck.

“Don’t worry, Gale will be in the West Wing of the house and will not cause any problems until Saturday.”

“He better not.”

He smiled at me, but it did not reach his eyes; in fact, those eyes carried the exact opposite emotion. “I assure you that I will not step out of my place,” he said.

I gave him a one-over look and then completely ignored him before I turned back to my mother. “This is utterly ridiculous, Mum, I hope that you know,” I said and stormed inside.

My shoulder brushed with Gale's, and I gasped.

All the hairs on my body had suddenly stood at attention, and from the way his muscles constricted, I was more than certain that he felt it as well.

It was like the whole world had come to a pause, and the only moment that mattered was the one where we locked eyes.

Nothing else existed, just him, and my entire body was totally aware of it.

The longer I looked at him, the more the sparks spread, and those tingles shot straight down to my core.

And my wolf—that w***e did not hesitate to push more and more memories from that night into my brain.

My mouth hung open slightly, and I had to catch myself before I started drooling.

More blood was pumping faster into my veins, so fast that I felt a bit lightheaded. Gale was the first person to break the eye contact, and it was like I was suddenly thrown back into reality.

My face was a permanent red.

I gulped, my fingers curled into fists at my sides. The way I was acting, one would think that he was the reason for all of my life’s misfortunes.

“Just stay in your lane and we will not have a problem.”
