DONOVAN’S POV
“Hey there girlie.”
I hugged my best friend tightly and kissed her all over her face.
“It has been way too long,” I groaned.
“It was just three days, b***h,” she said, laughing.
I rolled my eyes.
“Exactly. Too f*****g long.”
Before I could kiss her again on the cheek, Julio chose that exact moment to interrupt us, his boring-as-f**k blond hair practically glued into place with what looked like an entire gallon of gel.
Seriously, I don't know what Zara even saw in him.
But hey, beauty was in the eyes of the beholder or whatever that meant.
“Not too much now, she is my girlfriend,” he said and dropped a kiss on her forehead before shooting me a pointed look.
“Not yours.”
“Julio,” I began, emphasizing his name, something that I knew annoyed him to no end.
I smirked when I saw his jaw tick.
Too easy.
“Don’t you have something to do other than third wheel Zara and me?” I asked him, arching a brow.
He scoffed.
“Excuse you, Your Highness…” he began his petty act of revenge. “How on earth was I going to miss, Mummy dearest wifing you up to some powerful Alpha?”
He said it so mockingly that I could already feel my blood pressure rising.
“I will wring your f*****g neck, I swear.”
“Donovan!”
My mother’s voice practically stopped me from committing a well-deserved murder right now.
I glared at Julio.
“You are lucky.”
He flipped me the bird.
“See you later, wifey.”
Zara hit him on the chest.
“Behave yourself.” But her words did not even hold any bite behind them. He hugged her tightly from behind and dropped a kiss on the top of her forehead.
“Alright, love. I’ll stop.”
Then he smirked at me. “For now.”
I rolled my eyes.
“I might just leave you guys now.”
“See you later.”
“Yeah, wish me luck.”
I did a mock salute and walked all the way to sit at the front with my mother.
She looked at me with obvious displeasure in her eyes.
“Can I help you with anything, Rachael?” I asked.
Seriously, if she kept this frown on for any longer, then her face might take up a permanent shape.
And let me tell you, it was not flattering in the slightest.
“Must you dress like this for this important event, Donovan?” she asked.
I looked down at what I was wearing.
It was just a black lacy bralette that showed the magnetic silver piercings I had put on my belly button and black denim shorts. I finished the look with some black boots.
“What’s wrong with my clothes, Mum?” I asked.
“You look ridiculous!” she whisper-yelled.
I folded my arms.
“In all honesty, Mum, the only thing that is ridiculous is the fact that you are having seven Alpha men fight to be my mate. I am not Cinderella, and I definitely don’t want an Alpha in my life.”
“You know that is nonnegotiable,” she said.
I was silent for a minute.
In all honesty, I was aware of how much trouble that I had caused my mother. No matter how much she scolded me, I knew that it was not easy to continue defending me before the entire council.
This was one thing that was nonnegotiable.
I had to have an Alpha mate unless I wanted to lose my right to take the throne.
That was f*****g bullshit in my opinion.
There was a reason why Alpha males were at the bottom of the food chain. The only thing they had to offer was brute strength, and that was about it. They were mindless and uncouth, hurting people without a second thought and...
I had to choose one of them as my mate.
My chest heaved with the deep breath I took.
“I know, Mum, and I am sorry.”
She smiled at me.
“It’s all good, my love. Just sit down and let’s start.”
I lazily took a seat beside her.
Let the circus begin.
The announcer stepped into the center of the arena, and the entire crowd immediately fell silent.
The place was packed.
When I said everyone was here, I meant everyone.
Makes me wonder whether they were not busy.
But of course, everyone had come to witness the seven strongest Alphas compete for the right to stand beside the future leader of Moon Flower.
Personally?
I couldn't care less.
I leaned back in my seat and stared at the ceiling.
The Alphas came out one after the other, and I was barely impressed with any one of them, they all thought that their strength would impress me. I did not need that, I was strong enough to take care of myself.
What I wanted more than anything was for this to be over and done with.
The sounds of growling, cheering, and bodies hitting the ground blended together until it became background noise.
“Do you like this one?” Mum asked me.
I barely glanced toward the arena.
“Pass.”
She heaved a sigh. “I need you to take this seriously Donovan”
I turned and looked her right in the eye. “Pass”
“But-”
“I’ll pass thank you.”
She rubbed her forehead and I smiled innocently at her.
“You're going to give me drive me mad one of these days.”
“Mum, don’t I can’t live without you”
“You already have plenty.”
She laughed shaking her head “I don’t know what I am going to do with you.”
“And now... our final contender.”
I didn’t even bother looking up, until I smelled him.
My entire body went still.
That damn addictive scent that managed to make me lose my mind.
EVERY.
SINGLE.
TIME.
My wolf suddenly slammed against the walls of my consciousness and my fingers tightened around the armrest.
He stepped into the arena wearing nothing but a pair of black shorts, completely calm and utterly unaware of what his mere presence was doing to me.
Fuck.
His skin glistened beneath the bright lights, every muscle defined from what was probably years of dedicated training.
My mouth went completely dry.
I held my breath, scratch that… I couldn’t even breathe if I wanted to.
My wolf was busy panting in the back of my consciousness, I am talking tongue out rolling about the ground.
I could already feel the dampness between my legs.
By the goddess, since when did I begin to lack this much self-control?
And why the f**k was it this man—a f*****g Alpha, of all people—who could make me this needy?
I swallowed hard.
Gale stepped toward the center of the arena.
For one second, our eyes met, and he actually smirked at me….
His words from earlier began to ring in my head
“After I win that contest, then we can talk all night about who you are to me”
I had officially gone mad, there was no other explanation for how I was feeling.
The announcer raised his hand.
“Begin!”
Before the fight could actually start, I stood up abruptly.
“Stop!”
The entire arena fell silent and all eyes towards me.
I could feel people pointing at me as whispers traveled through the crowd like wind.
My mother looked mortified.
“Donovan, what on earth do you think you are doing?”
“Mum, there is no need for this anymore.”
She grabbed my wrist. “Donovan, sit down.”
I pulled my hand away.
“No.”
“Donovan.”
I pointed straight toward Gale.
Every single person in the arena followed my finger.
Gale's expression changed.
His eyes widened, and mouth was left hanging open.
“I want him.”
